The Phanariots have long animated the historiography of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Southeast Europe. Contemporary political commentators, as well as historians seeking to construct national(ist) narratives, branded the Phanariots with critiques of corruption, foreign interests, and the legacies of the Ottoman past. Yet, scholars have conducted scant research on how and why “Phanariots” and “Phanariotism” came to signify corruption, bad governance, and a seemingly inescapable Ottoman past after 1821. This workshop tends to this gap in historiography.

Elle vise à questionner le sens et la nature des carcéralités politiques selon les types de régimes ou les périodes ; le rôle de leurs acteurs, qu’il s’agisse en premier lieu des prisonniers politiques ou des administrations et des pouvoirs politiques à l’origine de ces mises en détention ; la place des lieux ou anciens lieux de captivité comme espace de politisation ou comme source d’identité politique et/ou de conflits mémoriels ; les productions politiques en milieu carcéral.

The aim of this conference is to study the dissident/resistant student press produced both in Central-Eastern and Southeastern Europe and by students from these countries abroad.

Black Sea archaeology has always captivated the interest of scholars, because of its unique topography and diachronically multi-ethnic historical landscape.The previous decade was a particularly challenging period for archaeological research worldwide due to the new realities imposed by the pandemic, the extraordinary political and socio-economic factors, and the long-lasting crisis in the Humanities and Arts. In spite of all this, excavations, systematic surveys, remote sensing and geophysical prospections, were undertaken in numerous coastal and inland sites along the Euxine, while equally productive were research projects on specific monuments or aspects of the material culture. Aiming to bring forth the latest advances accomplished in the field, the Department of Black Sea Studies at the Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre, are organizing an International Conference on The Archaeological Work in the Greek Settlements of the BlackSea and their Environs during the Last Decade.

Du Grand Tour à l’Orient-Express : curiosité, exploration, sociabilité
Au cours de ce colloque, nous nous proposons d’étudier la manière dont les voyageurs sillonnant les Balkans et la Méditerranée orientale, entre le Grand Tour en Orient et l’épopée de l’Orient-Express, ont pu appréhender ces pays, leurs habitants et leurs passés. Nous nous donnons pour but d’explorer les représentations sociales des voyageurs, mais aussi celles des populations visitées. Sans se limiter à reproduire les schémas classiques de compréhension de ces discours, redevables à Edward Saïd, il s’agira d’historiciser, de contextualiser et de décliner ces perceptions ambivalentes en fonction des considérations géopolitiques, des orientations idéologiques, mais aussi des affinités personnelles de ceux qui ont produit ces discours. En parallèle, nous aimerions étudier ces lieux de sociabilité que sont les navires ou et des trains, à l’instar de l’Orient-Express et de son successeur, le Simplon-Orient-Express, ainsi que son prolongement asiatique conduisant en Iraq et en Égypte, le Taurus-Express.

During the age of revolutions, West European politicians, scholars, and popular writers often characterized South-East-Central Europe as a corrupt political space. Notables from the region routinely echoed these claims. Those in and outside of South-East-Central Europe mobilized commentaries on “corruption” for their own political, professional, and personal gains. They used the idea of corruption to assert, for instance, that they knew to run more honest and efficient administrations, military regimes, and commercial operations. The conference organizers welcome paper proposals that employ a (de)constructivist and/or sematic approach to study the concept corruption and its relationship to the rise of (West European) modernity. Submissions should focus on Central-South-East Europe from the 1750s to the 1850s. Applicants working on regional micro-histories that situate changing notions of “corruption” in a transnational context are especially encouraged to apply.

Table-ronde « Revenir sur la Question d’Orient, un siècle après le traité de Lausanne »
En janvier 1923, une convention est signée entre la Grèce et la Turquie, au sujet de déplacements forcés de certains de leurs ressortissants respectifs. Cette convention mettait fin à une guerre gréco-ottomane qui avait duré trois ans entre 1919 et 1922. Qualifiée de « Grande Catastrophe » dans l’historiographie grecque, de guerre de libération nationale dans l’historiographie turque, l’issue de ce conflit constitua le dernier acte de la Question d’Orient. Un siècle plus tard, cette rencontre nous invite à revenir à la fois sur la genèse de cette question dans les Balkans des années 1820 et sur ses avatars dans les débats publics et les relations diplomatiques des sociétés concernées.

From the Grand Tour to Orient-Express: curiosity, exploration, sociability
In this colloquium, we propose to study how the travelers crossing the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, between the “Grand Tour en Orient” and the Orient-Express, were able to apprehend these countries, their inhabitants, and their past. Our aim is to explore the social representations of travelers, as well as those of the populations they visited. Without limiting ourselves to reproducing the classic schemes for understanding these discourses, indebted to Edward Saïd, we shall historicize, contextualize and define these ambivalent perceptions according to the geopolitical considerations, ideological orientations, and personal affinities of those who produced these discourses.

Wer ist Walter? Resistance against Nazism in Europe
The first conference in the framework of our “Wer ist Walter?”-project will include four panels on the history of resistance against Nazism and fascism during World War Two. Gathering historians, curators and other researchers from different countries, the main aims of the conference are to present and discuss new research on the history of resistance, with a specific focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France and Germany, in a comparative and European perspective, and to discuss about different understandings of resistance and about the relevance of its memory today.

Agency and action in Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish émigré communities during the Cold War
This special webinar celebrates the launch of the project’s public heritage exhibition atkadocheritage.be. This online exhibition contains a selection of contributions produced by the project’s partners, outlining a wealth of civil society mobilizations by Central and Eastern European migrants in the Low Countries during the period 1933-1989. The exhibition’s purpose is to emphasize the potential that forgotten stories like these can play in curating the heritage, commemorating, and documenting the histories of the unique circumstances that these Central European émigré communities faced, living in Belgium and the Netherlands, during this tumultuous period of modern history.

Éditer en exil en temps de régimes autoritaires en Europe médiane (1918-1989)
À l’occasion de cette journée, il s’agira d’appréhender l’Europe médiane entre 1918 et 1989, à la fois comme lieu de départ de dissidents à des régimes autoritaires s’exilant ailleurs dans le monde et lieu d’accueil pour certaines éditions d’exil. L’attention se portera avant tout sur l’expérience liée à la création de maisons d’éditions dans ces différents contextes. De Paris à New-York, de Berlin à Rome, en passant par des villes comme Prague ou Bucarest, ce phénomène éditorial constitue un objet d’étude en soi, ainsi qu’un observatoire privilégié pour mieux cerner les différentes dissidences ainsi exprimées. Une place particulière est occupée au sein de ce corpus par l’édition allophone, autrement dit, les publications dans des langues autres que celles établies / reconnues comme officielles et / ou minoritaires dans l’espace où elles voient le jour.

L’Adriatique entre Antiquité tardive et haut Moyen Âge : espace d'échange d’idées et de modèles
L’Adriatique antique, en tant qu’un espace d’échange, de commerce, de cultures, connaît de nouvelles approches et de nouvelles connaissances qui nous permettent de mieux appréhender l’héritage romain et les nouvelles pratiques médiévales aux influences diverses. Le destin de son territoire romain est déterminé par des facteurs économiques, politiques et sociaux et par des événements historiques importants. Comment ces facteurs ont influencé le paysage urbain, agricole et militaire dans différentes parties de la région ? Peut-on dire que l’Adriatique est un lieu où l’Est et l’Ouest se rencontrent, ou bien un lieu de divisions ? Ces journées d’étude doctorales ont pour objectif de présenter et d’interroger l’Adriatique dans ses dimensions spatiales et temporelles en le considérant comme le point de jonction de l’Occident et de l’Orient, notamment à l’époque de l’Antiquité tardive et du haut Moyen Âge.

Around the Archive: Productions, Itineraries, and Social Practices
7th Graduate Student Workshop of Center for Turkish, Ottoman, Balkan, and Central Asian Studies (CETOBaC)
This day will focus on the issues of production, use, and circulation of primary sources in our research areas. It will allow each participant to present their work, reflect collectively, discuss how we collect, produce, and classify our archives, and deal with their interpretation. It will also question the processes of archiving and the dynamics of conservation, patrimonialization, and destruction of archives as sociopolitical issues. Finally, by taking advantage of the diversity of the cultural areas studied, we will reflect on the transmission and circulation of sources in their temporal and spatial backgrounds.

De la curiosité humaniste à l’esprit de système
L’évolution du paradigme des savoirs dans les régions situées entre la mer Adriatique et les Alpes aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles
Dès la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle, on assiste en Carniole et dans les provinces voisines, la Styrie et la Carinthie, qui sont des aires de contact entre plusieurs langues et plusieurs cultures à un changement des paradigmes culturels et mentaux ainsi qu’à une exploitation plus systématique du territoire. Les élites sociales se tournent vers les savoirs scientifiques et techniques que favorisent les Lumières européennes, notamment la minéralogie, métallurgie, chimie, zoologie, botanique, agronomie, médecine, linguistique. Ce colloque interrogera la multiplicité des pratiques culturelles liées à la circulation, la transmission et l’adaptation des savoirs scientifiques, techniques et artistiques qui animent les sociétés urbaines des régions slovènes, aux confins des duchés méridionaux des Habsbourg, de la République de Venise et des Provinces Illyriennes, tout au long du siècle qui va de l’avènement au trône de Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche (1740) jusqu’au Compromis austro-hongrois de 1867.

Ce dossier de la revue Balkanologie interrogera la spécificité d’un engagement féministe dans les arts et la littérature balkaniques. Si de nombreux travaux sur les questions de représentations des femmes ont déjà été produits, ce numéro s’intéressera sur la capacité d’agir des femmes artistes et autrices que ce soit dans leurs productions artistiques ou dans leurs modes d’organisation féministe dans les champs littéraires et artistiques. Qu’en est-il de l’engagement littéraire et artistique des femmes pour leurs droits et/ou dans le cadre de mouvements féministes ? Quelles sont les spécificités de ces formes d’engagement artistique dans les pays des Balkans ?

Longtemps considérée comme périphérique, l’Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, – espace hétérogène possédant néanmoins certaines dynamiques propres bien identifiables – a progressivement retrouvé sa place dans une historiographie dynamique et renouvelée grâce aux apports de l’histoire transnationale, globale ou connectée. Le premier volet de ce futur rendez-vous pluriannuel intitulé « Les lieux du politique en Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, 1790-1990 » sera consacré aux lieux institutionnels.
