Abundance or Sufficiency?

The Left’s Diverging Paths in the Green Transition

Since the 1970s, environmental constraints, shifting social values, and the crisis of post-war productivism have profoundly challenged the Western left. Once grounded in beliefs in scientific progress, technological innovations, and rising material prosperity, left-wing movements have increasingly been forced to confront planetary limits, rising inequality, and growing public ambivalence toward technoscience. These tensions have crystallised in contemporary debates on the Green Transition, where competing visions of abundance (growth-oriented technological optimism) and sufficiency (degrowth, sobriété, post-productivism) shape political and social antagonisms.

Sans sous-estimer les négociations et les conflits qui l’animent et le traversent souvent, cette quatrième journée d’étude du groupe de recherche sur les utopies cinématographiques se demandera comment l’utopie travaille le cinéma collectif et sa portée politique, à partir de démarches militantes ou participatives, reconfigurant la notion d’auteur, sollicitant une plus large participation à l’invention du film ou permettant un accès partagé aux moyens de création.

An ecological transition under strain: country, landscape, and uses in contemporary Germany

The starting point for this conference is the observation that the ecological transition in Germany, which one might have thought would be easier or at least more harmonious than in other countries due to the importance that environmental issues have had in German culture, society, and politics from very early on, is in fact encountering numerous obstacles and is even being called into question. This is evidenced, among other things, by the setbacks which the energy transition encounters and by the success of the party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) despite—or perhaps because of—its stance in favour of climate change denial.

We are pleased to share with you the Call for Paper for a session scheduled for the upcoming 2026 Conference of the European Association for Urban History (EAUH) on the theme 'City Networks in Europe and beyond', to be held in Barcelona in September 3-6, entitled: Making the city differently: urban struggles, circulations and networks after 1945. This session will look at the circulation and transfer of critical discourses, as well as activist practices that challenge the dominant ways of making cities after 1945. From a transnational perspective, the aim is to trace the networks, interrelations and genealogies of critical and alternative urbanism in contemporary Europe and beyond.

L’objectif est de mieux comprendre les relations entre le politique et les sphères du savoir en contexte autoritaire et dans les phases de changement politique. En se focalisant sur les « professions intellectuelles », il s’agit d’approfondir les possibilités et les cadres de l’opposition aux dictatures et leur participation au processus de transition et de démocratisation en Espagne et au Portugal dans les années 1960-1970. En raison de leur autonomie et de leur capital social, ces professions ont des capacités de résistance et de protestations plus élevées que d’autres groupes sociaux. L’objectif est aussi d’explorer l’évolution des relations aux pouvoirs autoritaires de groupes appartenant à la bourgeoisie ou aux classes moyennes, qui ont pu bénéficier de positions privilégiées ou ont soutenu ces régimes, avant de s’en distancier.

European women and feminists in the 20th century

The workshop focuses on the intersections between the history of international relations, European studies and women's and gender history. Since the early 21^st century, historiography on international relations and European integration has undergone profound transformations, enabling the integration of a gender perspective. However, writing a history of European and international relations from a female perspective and integrating a gender perspective into these scientific fields remains a challenge. Therefore, the aim of this workshop is to take stock of approaches at the crossroads of the study of international relations, European integration, gender and feminism. It will provide a forum for debate on recent empirical work and work in progress.

To celebrate this New Hollywood pioneer and his impressive body of work (30 feature-length fiction films, not counting ongoing projects, documentaries and shorts), this symposium will look at the director's filmography primarily through political and aesthetic approaches, aiming to offer a fresh perspective on a much-studied filmography. It will also be an opportunity to look at his lesser-known works.

Extreme Rigth and Democracy in Europe After the Second World War

Coexistence, Contrasts, Contradictions

It seems urgent to reflect on how democracies have responded to the presence of extreme rightwing movements, both in terms of political practices and rhetoric. Have democracies actively opposed the extreme right, or have they opted for strategies of containment and coexistence? Equally important is to examine the perspective of the extreme right: how has it interpreted and narrated the (supposed) coexistence with the democratic system? How has it dealt with the legacy of fascism and to what extent has it adapted to the culture of democracy? This conference will analyze the language and culture of the extreme right, paying special attention to its critiques of democracy, including its reaction of Enlightenment values and claims that democracy operates a double standard, tolerant in theory, but marginalizing and punishing the extreme right in practice. Giving historical depth to the extreme right’s relationship with democracy will allow for new insights into today’s public debates.

Ce colloque transdisciplinaire se propose d’étudier la presse étudiante dissidente / résistante produite dans les pays d’Europe médiane, mais aussi en dehors, à l’initiative d’étudiants originaires de ces pays. Du tournant des XIX^e et XX^e siècles à la fin de la Guerre Froide, des étudiants ont joué un rôle fondamental dans l’expression et l’organisation de la résistance et / ou de la dissidence face à des régimes politiques établis, dont certains se caractérisaient par une abolition du fonctionnement démocratique et libéral de la société.

Cet appel à contribution des Cahiers d’histoire. Revue d’histoire critique s’intéresse au militantisme de gauche en Afrique, notamment celui qu’on peut qualifier de révolutionnaire, sous-tendu par l’anticolonialisme et l’anti-impérialisme, depuis les années 1960, avec l’accès aux indépendances jusqu’aux années 1990, avec l’avènement du multipartisme et l’imposition des politiques d’ajustement structurel. Il s’agit de jeter un regard sur des histoires souvent méconnues de la littérature académique, parce que souvent vécues dans la clandestinité, durant les longues périodes où les États post-coloniaux prohibaient de facto ou de jure le multipartisme.

En s’intéressant plus particulièrement aux pratiques artistiques contemporaines faisant intervenir de la nourriture, ce projet de journée d’étude vise à interroger la capacité de « l’agir-créatif » à provoquer des changements sociaux et/ou sociétaux, en mobilisant les dimensions symboliques, culturelles et politiques des pratiques alimentaires. Il s’agit d’inscrire ces pratiques en mouvements artistiques et sociaux constants et ancrés dans un présent en lien avec les luttes politiques actuelles. Ainsi, quelles places et quelles formes prennent ces pratiques artistiques et à quelles fins, aujourd’hui ? Cette journée invite les chercheur·es et les artistes à élargir les perspectives dans différents champs, tels que l’histoire de l’art, les arts plastiques, le cinéma, la littérature, le théâtre, ainsi que les sciences sociales appliquées à l’art.
