Past and future of archaeological collections

Field exploration, movements, preservation (19th-21st c.)

This symposium will concentrate on the creation, transmission and movements of prehistoric collections –including natural history specimens, human remains, and artefacts–, from the colonial era to the present day. Particular emphasis will be placed on collections from Southeast Asia, however, case studies drawn from other historical and geographical contexts will also be represented.

Les communications se déclineront en quatre dialectiques, constituant autant de thèmes reflétant les intérêts et l’itinéraire scientifique de l’archéologue Georges Laplace (1918-2004) : les tons et tonalités du chant, les lieux pyrénéens et montagnards, les savoirs scientifiques et dissidents et les transmissions techniques, anciennes ou actuelles.

Encompassing a wide historical period and geographical area, our aim is to examine both the history of the archaeological object itself and the archaeological object in history. This interdisciplinary approach will allow us to compare points of view on a subject at the heart of current issues.

Chaque année, le congrès national des sociétés historiques et scientifiques, lieu de rencontre et d’échange unique dans le paysage de la recherche française, rassemble environ cinq cents participants parmi lesquels des universitaires issus de très nombreuses disciplines : histoire, géographie, sciences, ethnologie, anthropologie, préhistoire et protohistoire, archéologie, philologie, histoire de l’art, environnement, etc. Il accueille également des jeunes chercheurs (dont c’est parfois la première intervention publique) et des érudits locaux.

Matières noires : sens et substances

Le numéro 55 de la revue Technè présentera un dossier intitulé : « Matières noires : sens et substances ». La couleur noire a déjà été analysée dans des ouvrages ainsi que dans le cadre d’expositions sans que sa matérialité ait toutefois été abordée en détail. Pourtant, si certaines couleurs ne prennent pas de pluriel, le noir assume bien le sien car il est des noirs et des matières noires. Le numéro souhaite offrir une vision matérielle aussi exhaustive que possible des objets et des corpus patrimoniaux noirs par (i) nature, (ii) transformations intentionnelles, et (iii) altérations afin d’identifier et de mettre en exergue des matériaux et des substances derrière la dénomination générique « matière noire » souvent évoquée sur les cartels, les fiches d’objets et dans les interrogations des chargés de collections.

History of prehistory in Palestine – Israel

International workshop

Our workshop aims to shed light on the various actors and institutions who shaped the field of prehistory from the 19^th century until our days. They will allow us to grasp the establishment and development of prehistoric international and local networks on the longue durée. We encourage participants to address the socio-political and cultural contexts in which prehistory was practiced and knowledge produced. Many answers to the above questions and topics of research may be uncovered in personal, institutional, and administrative archives, while others are revealed in excavation reports. This brings us to the last section of our workshop: what sources for the history of Prehistory and how can they be used? Has the writing of a renewed history of the discipline affected today’s research and how?

Histoire et épistémologie des savoirs et des idées aux origines de l’écologie (HESIODE)

Réflexion sur la réception et l’influence de la pensée grecque ancienne dans les sciences contemporaines

Ce séminaire permettra de constituer un groupe de travail pluridisciplinaire sur les représentations grecques des rapports de l’homme à la nature et leur réception de l’Antiquité à nos jours. Il s’agira d’intégrer au sein du projet, dans une perspective fédératrice et complémentaire, des chercheurs de disciplines différentes, en tenant compte des travaux déjà effectués par chacun d’eux dans le champ d’étude envisagé, et d’établir des liens aux niveaux national, européen et international avec des chercheurs, des laboratoires de recherche ou des instituts travaillant sur la même thématique. Il permettra de nourrir la réflexion sur les représentations et les pratiques anciennes, et en particulier grecques, du rapport de l’homme à la nature dans toutes leurs nuances et leur complexité.

Pluridisciplinary dialogues on the status of the agricultural treaty

« Il ne voulait pas instruire les agriculteurs mais plaire à ses lecteurs » : comme l’indique ce jugement bien connu de Sénèque sur les Géorgiques de Virgile, la valeur pratique de la poésie didactique a pu être remise en cause dès l’Antiquité. Les traités en prose en revanche semblent épargnés par une telle critique, même si Palladius, par exemple, reproche aux auteurs qui l’ont précédé leur excès de recherche littéraire. Selon lui, cette dernière nuirait à l’intelligibilité du propos, et en cela Palladius rejoint les préjugés contemporains selon lesquels les qualités techniques et scientifiques d’un texte seraient inversement proportionnelles à son degré de littérarité. De fait, le traité technique, en tant qu’œuvre de prose non fictionnelle, relève essentiellement du « régime conditionnel » de littérarité et donc, in fine, de la perception du lecteur. Outre la question de l’inscription dans une tradition littéraire, celle du destinataire et du lectorat est donc essentielle pour définir le statut du traité technique en prose.

Authors are invited to address issues such as: the scientific use of archival information: how the data from past research are integrated in the current production of knowledge? The organisation of research projects: who led the projects, and what division of labour between archaeologists, historians or archivists are at stake? Publication policy: to which audience (scientific, laypeople) and in which journals the results of projects combining new and old archaeological data are addressed?

History of measuring and calculations in archaeology

In archaeology, quantitative approaches have a long tradition and belong to the very core of the discipline. However, the history of quantitative archaeological reasoning might be not as straight forward as suggested by the disciplinary history commonlys hared among archaeologists. Taken into account different social interests and traditions we doubt the narrative of linear methodological and technical progress, especially considering to a certain extent alternative developments of quantitative approaches inblocks of countries somewhat separated by language barriers. Different communities assign different roles and functions to quantitative procedures applied in archaeology. This session aims to explore the multitude of factors that determine the development ofquantitative archaeology.

Our working group meets once a month at Paris 7 University to read and discuss, from photographs and / or copies and / or transliterations, selected cuneiform mathematical texts by the participants. Unless otherwise indicated, sessions are held on the Thursdays indicated from 13h to 16h in room 324 of the building Olympe de Gouges. Anyone interested is welcome, whether on a regular basis or more punctual.
