Early Modern Imaginings and Scientific Investigations
This issue of Shakespeare en devenir invites articles on representations, invocations, and speculations on lunar topics, from early modern imaginings and scientific investigations to contemporary deployments in performance, queer genre and eco-theory. Suggested topics and questions can include visual representations of the moon, the moon’s long association with diseases and madness, the Man in the Moon (sources, circulation, intertextuality), the moon and the cult of Elizabeth I, the cultural circulation and aftermath of Copernicus and Galileo’s discoveries, voyages to the moon as a utopia. Authors considered may range from Lyly, Shakespeare and Jonson, to John Wilkins, Aphra Behn, and modern and contemporary writers.

Cet appel à contribution se propose d’interroger les usages et significations des idées de « progrès » et d’« innovation » - qu’elles soient en rapport avec la technologie, l’économie, la politique, la religion ou la culture - au cours du long XVIIIe siècle et leurs impacts sur les pratiques sociales. Il s’attachera à mesurer les effets de l’innovation sous toutes ses formes (technique, politique, économique, artistique, littéraire, etc.) sur les sociabilités dans les sociétés européennes et coloniales. Il sera également intéressant d’envisager la sociabilité elle-même comme une innovation conceptuelle et sociale.

“Scientiae”: Disciplines of Knowing in the Early Modern World
Building on Scientiae’s interdisciplinary legacy, and its study of the production and circulation of knowledge, we will underscore the interconnectedness of regions, periods, cultures, and material and intellectual traditions in the period between 1400 and 1800. Although centred around the emergence of modern natural science, Scientiae is intended for scholars working in any area of early-modern intellectual culture. The Scientiae network encompasses the long Renaissance period and seeks to integrate historiographical reflection into an approach that, since its creation, has been firmly rooted in epistemology and the history of science, as well as intellectual history, and the practice of knowledge in dialogue.

Ce projet de doctorat a pour objectif de saisir comment la Renaissance, période de synthèse et de reconfiguration des savoirs, a posé les bases et élaboré certains des modèles épistémologiques pour une enquête sur les origines de la vie et des planètes. Il s’organise autour de l’expérience graphique au sens large, liée à l’avènement de la culture imprimée, qui englobe la création d’images (dessins, gravures, cartes) et les modes d’écriture pour organiser et transmettre les connaissances.

It intends to move beyond traditional research, so as to map out the social and cultural dynamics of this precious and versatile material in Renaissance Europe.

Call for papers - Representation
This symposium proposes to study how artists have not only observed animals and, in some cases, lived alongside them, but have also sometimes attributed agency to them. The idea of an active relationship between the artist and the animal raises fundamental questions about the role of animals in artistic production. The analysis of artistic practices allows for questioning the nature of the bond between humans and other animals, and examining how, in certain works, the animal can be perceived as a protagonist capable of resisting attempts at reification. Rather than being a mere reflection of power relations between humans and animals, artistic creation thus becomes a site of negotiation, even contestation, of these relationships.

L’objectif de cette journée d’étude est de réinvestir le couple carte et histoire dans l’empan chronologique du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle, en Europe et dans ses prolongements impériaux selon plusieurs directions.
