Cette journée entend interroger les finalités de cette mise en nombre : s’agit-il de compter pour contrôler, pour stigmatiser, pour exclure ou marginaliser ou bien pour mieux intégrer ? Qui et dans quelle mesure ce nombre va-t-il inquiéter ou rassurer ?

Color in Circulation: Transfers, Transformations, Translations
This conference aims to explore what happens to color when objects, images, and what used to be called style circulate across space and time, across cultures, traditions, and diverse conceptions of color and its symbolism, but also across media. The event serves as a celebratory conclusion to the research project Visual Contagions (Swiss National Fund for research, 2021–2025), conducted at the University of Geneva and focused on the global circulation of images, in collaboration with the Artl@s project.

L’analyse cinématographique et audiovisuelle, d’hier à aujourd’hui
Objets, histoires, épistémologies, techniques
La pratique de l’analyse audiovisuelle structure historiquement l’ensemble du domaine de ce que l’on nomme les « études cinématographiques et audiovisuelles » car si nombre d’approches disciplinaires visent avant tout à la contextualisation des œuvres et des corpus, l’analyse interne de fragments constitue souvent un moment nodal des études particulières, ne serait-ce qu’à des fins de description. À l’occasion de ce colloque, il s’agira donc de revenir à la fois sur l’histoire mais encore sur les épistémologies et surtout sur les techniques de l’analyse du film comme de l’ensemble des autres objets audiovisuels qui, depuis l’avènement de la télévision et des écrans domestiques, se sont formidablement développés et déployés, entraînant à leur suite un cortège de pratiques différentes de l’analyse.

Les sources, élément central de la recherche historique, peuvent être approchées non seulement par leur contenu, mais aussi par leur matérialité. Les supports des documents, qui ont évolué au fil des siècles, présentent une grande diversité, allant des volumens de papyrus aux livres imprimés, en passant par les chartes, registres ou encore les productions éphémères comme les tracts et affiches. Cette diversité ne se limite pas au matériau ou au format, mais touche également des champs plus larges comme l’image, le son, ou encore les supports numériques modernes. Tous ces aspects offrent des informations précieuses et permettent de situer historiquement, géographiquement et culturellement un document.

Quoting, editing, rewriting: reception and representation of fragmentary Latin poetry
The way in which our access to fully extant texts is mediated by subsequent reception is now well established. In the case of fragmentary works of Latin poetry, this mediation is even more direct and material: because we depend on secondary transmission for our access, the corpus of early Roman poetry is composed exclusively of the elements that ensured its reception (quotation, testimonia, etc.). It is often the case that studies of the reception of fragmentary authors tell us more about the later receiving authors and their aims than about the earlier authors and works to which they refer. This symposium is therefore less concerned with the content of Latin fragmentary poetry than with its literary and editorial development.

Voices of the South (Guyanas, Latin America, Caribbean, West Africa)
When speech becomes authoritative and oral serves as a writing of history
This issue aims to curate articles dedicated to exploring the voices that resonate from these regions. Central to our inquiry is the exploration of memory – individual or collective recollections of lived experiences, orally transmitted across generations, and culturally embedded within communities. This memory is particularly important in oral tradition societies, in West Africa for example, as well as in the societies and cultures of the Americas (including Guiana and the Caribbean). As a resolutely multidisciplinary dossier, it will welcome texts focusing on the words of the “people of the South,” as witness-spectators or witness-actors, and on the uses to which these words are put in research in the humanities and social sciences.

Face à l’émergence de sources nouvelles, comment faire l’histoire des architectes en France ou ailleurs ? De quelle manière appréhender la réalité de leurs pratiques et de leurs parcours ? Plus généralement, qu’apportent les méthodes prosopographiques à l’écriture de l’histoire de l’architecture ? C’est à ces questions que ces journées d’étude sont consacrées.

Conférence Historical Network Research 2024
Les phénomènes étudiés par les sciences historiques sont, par nature, des situations complexes : elles impliquent, par exemple, des relations personnelles entremêlées, des dynamiques collectives qui structurent l’espace social et culturel, ou encore des systèmes politiques et économiques qui opèrent à l’échelle locale et mondiale. La métaphore du réseau est fréquemment utilisée pour décrire cet enchevêtrement. Au cours des dernières décennies, cependant, les historiens ont commencé à réfléchir aux moyens de formaliser cette approche en s’appropriant les concepts et les outils de la théorie des graphes pour offrir une nouvelle perspective sur les archives. L’application de l’analyse formelle des réseaux à l’histoire est aujourd’hui un champ d’expérimentation et de recherche très fertile. L’une des ambitions de la conférence est de questionner notre utilisation de la visualisation de réseaux en histoire. La conférence est ouverte à tous les sujets impliquant l’analyse de réseaux dans les disciplines historiques. Sont donc attendues des contributions traitant de n’importe quelle période historique et de n’importe quelle zone géographique.

En prenant appui sur des exemples qui tous regardent les processus individuels de création ou de conception (littéraire, philosophique, artistique), ce colloque entend rassembler et faire dialoguer les acteurs qui contribuent à l’invention des archives et leur compréhension.

The visionary drawing and its knowledge: artists’ diagrams
If ever there was a graphic line that carried the desire to visualise the invisible, it is the diagram. This workshop aims to examine the way in which artists used diagrams in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By favouring case studies, it aims to renew the study of artists’ and writers’ diagrams that have already been identified and to bring to light previously unidentified artistic works, in order to understand how they function as images and thought processes, as well as their relationship to the scientific modes of visualisation of their time.

Spinning off the new book Les Devenirs numériques des patrimoines (The Digital Futures of Heritage), this event carefully curated a series of talks drawing on a variety of disciplinary perspectives and examples, showcasing the progress and advantages of working with the ever-changing technologies.

Reimagining Annotation for Multimodal Cultural Heritage is an international conference that will be held in Rennes, France from 7th-9th February 2024. The conference looks to explore questions around digital annotation in the humanities and the GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) across three primary axes: tools, methods and projects. We seek to discover the extent of digital tools for the navigation of multimodal document networks, the creation of data-driven interfaces and the implementation of close and / or distant reading techniques; the epistemological questions that these tools allow to emerge and how research in the humanities is changing; and projects that make use of these tools.

Translation and the Periodical
This conference seeks to investigate whether periodical translation has particular qualities that differentiate the practice from other forms of translation, notably for print books. The discursive techniques of periodical translation, and its key role in the mediation of culture and the dynamic exploration of the present -long argued to be at the core of periodicals’ specificity-, are likely to be touchstones for answering this question. Therefore the international conference “Translation and the Periodical” aims to push forward decisively the developing conversations on cultural translation in periodicals. The conference will start with a postgraduate workshop on 13 September, followed by the main conference on 14 and 15 September.

The Belvedere Research Center is continuing its conference series on the digital transformation of art museums with its fifth event on the topic. While the 2022 conference challenged binary concepts such as analog/ digital, this year’s event critically examines the imagined cultural metaverse. In four thematic online sessions and an on-site workshop, the lectures deal with the immersive experiences of virtuality and reality, cultural heritage data, value discourse surrounding the metaverse and NFTs, and self-perception and the social role of museums.

The Sociology of Contemporary Art

Peut-être plus que d’autres époques de l’histoire des arts plastiques, l’art contemporain semble appeler l’analyse sociologique. De fait, les dernières années ont vu se multiplier les recherches sur l’art moderne et contemporain inspirées par les méthodes de la sociologie de l’art ou de l’histoire sociale de l’art. Mais cette orientation est encore loin d’être courante, dans une discipline, l’histoire de l’art, qui a une longue tradition de défiance vis-à-vis des sciences sociales. Réciproquement, les sociologues sont relativement peu nombreux à s’aventurer sur le terrain de l’art contemporain. Cette journée d’étude entend donc encourager le développement d’une spécialité encore en devenir et les confrontations de points de vue entre disciplines et courants théoriques.

Les rencontres (bi)annuelles internationales du design (RAID)
L’École supérieure des sciences et technologies du design (ESSTED) lance la quatrième édition des rencontres (bi)annuelles internationales du design (RAID) sous le thème des émergences. Se déroulant sur deux jours, le 10 et 11 mai 2022, les RAID seront clôturées le 12 mai par la célébration du vingtième anniversaire de la fondation de l’ESSTED. Les réfléchissant sous la thématique des « émergences en design : de l'axiome au rhizome », autant les RAID que le vingtième anniversaire, seront le lieu d’échanges entre designers, chercheurs, académiciens, étudiants et professionnels d’horizons différents et de nationalités diverses qui contribueront, chacun depuis son angle de vue, profil et préoccupations, à la redéfinition du rôle du design dans une société changeante et en constante mutation.
