Sociability and the Travelling Letter
Message, Medium, Mobility in Europe and the Colonies in the Long Eighteenth Century (1650-1850)
The long eighteenth century is widely recognisedby scholars as a golden age of letter writing, characterised by the expansion of transnational and transatlantic correspondence networks among the elites. Particularly in Britain, this period witnessed an unprecedented enthusiasm for epistolary exchange, which led to a proliferation of publications—ranging from scholarly productions such as theoretical treatises and letter-writing manuals, to literary works, whether fictional, sentimental, general, or biographical. These developments contributed to a redefinition of epistolary conventions, narrative models, and often gendered representations of letter writing.

Journée Doctorale du LASLAR
Pour notre prochain rendez-vous annuel de la journée des doctorants du LASLAR, nous proposons d’explorer la notion de « contre-analyse de la société » dans les arts. Issue des travaux de Marc Ferro sur le cinéma, la contre-analyse constituerait « la matière d’une autre histoire que l’Histoire », où le film, intégré « au monde qui l’entoure et avec lequel il communique », se conçoit comme une œuvre révélatrice d’une réflexion interne portant à la fois sur l’espace-temps qu’elle représente et sur celui dont elle est issue. Plus encore, il aurait pour effet « de déstructurer [l’Histoire] que plusieurs générations d’hommes d’État, de penseurs, avaient réussi à ordonner en un beau système », et détruirait l’image « que chaque institution, chaque individu, s’était constituée devant la société ».

Special issue of the journal “Contemporanea. Rivista di storia dell’800 e del ’900”
This special issue of Contemporanea aims to reflect on the mobility of political material culture, analysing how its circulation and transformation, both physical and symbolic in time and space, generated connections between contexts and movements, disseminated and popularised images and imagination, and redefined and influenced political sensibilities and practices during the long 19th century.

Stay or Leave? Family survival tactics during the age of emigrations
1770-1830s
During the Age of Revolutions (c. 1770-1830), Europe and the Americas were convulsed by a wave of interrelated political upheavals, social protests, slave rebellions, and wars. Republican alternatives to monarchies proliferated, even as colonial wars and abolitionist insurrections shook even the most entrenched empires. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people found themselves displaced and dispersed across the Atlantic world. While some chose to leave out of political or religious principle, others were forced out by some combination of ideological persecution, economic dislocation, and armed conflict. Wherever they ended up, the uprooted were forced to negotiate foreign and often hostile cultures and asylum practices. Drawing together historians and scholars of the literary, visual, and musical arts, this workshop aims to shed light on the least-visible members of these diasporas —women, children and servants— and to develop interdisciplinary perspectives on familial constellations of exile.

The Child Stage Performer (18th-beginning 19th century)
Journal “European Drama and Performance Studies”
This issue of European Drama and Performance Studies will look at the conditions under which child stage performers operate, in the light of recent research on “working childhood”, on the social history of performers, and on stages and performances that have long been in the shadows (curiosity shows, fairground shows, cultural activities outside European capitals). The aim will be to bring together case studies and also to offer summaries on this theme, with an emphasis on analyses of the 18th century and the early 19th century.

Pluralität als Anlass zu gestalterischer Verdichtung und Kritik in den Künsten und Theologien des 19. Jahrhunderts
Ausgehend von den religiösen Differenzierungsbewegungen des langen 19. Jahrhunderts möchte das vierte Treffen des DFG-Netzwerks „Religion im Plural“ die produktiven Qualitäten gesellschaftlicher Pluralisierungsprozesse ausloten. Im interdisziplinären Austausch (so Musikwissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte, Literaturwissenschaft, evangelische und katholische Theologien und Jewish Studies) gilt es, weltanschauliche Diversifizierungsbewegungen zu erfassen sowie allen voran die Frage, wie in Musik, Literatur, bildender Kunst und Theologie das Aufkommen neuer religiöser Formationen und Philosophiekonzepte bis hin zu den Erklärungsmodellen der menschlichen Psyche verhandelt wurde.

Les métiers de l’opéra en France et en Italie (1789-1900)
Un opéra est un produit qui naît de la rencontre de diverses formes d’art : musique, danse, mise-en-scène, littérature dramatique, décor, etc. Ces disciplines, tout en conservant leurs particularités, étaient appelées à s’intégrer dans un résultat artistique homogène. De quelle manière les artistes combinaient leurs différents savoir-faire ? Quelles relations, quel langage, quelles perspectives pouvaient naître de ces collaborations ? Cette journée d’étude propose une réflexion autour des métiers de l’opéra en France et en Italie, entre la Révolution de 1789 et le début du XXe siècle. Cette journée s’adresse aux musicologues, aux historien·nes de l’art et aux chercheur·ses en littérature et est divisée en deux parties : des conférences le matin et des ateliers doctoraux l’après-midi.

Strangers and foreigners: hospitality and hostility in Britain, France, and Germany, 1680-1850
The ongoing wars and migrations have foregrounded the issue of the hosting of migrants and the duty of hospitality. This international Early career symposium aims to explore the relationship to foreigners in Germanophone areas, France and Britain (including colonial spaces) from the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), which provoked international migrations of Protestant refugees, to the revolutions of 1848, which were characterized both by internationalist fervour and by political exiles.

Within the framework of the research project “Building Identity: Character in Architectural Debate and Design, 1750-1850”, which focuses on the uses and meaning of ‘character’ in architectural criticism and practice in the period 1750-1850, the chair for the History and Theory of Architecture (Prof. Dr Maarten Delbeke) at the gta Institute, D-Arch, ETH Zurich is offering two positions for doctoral students. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation Council (SNSF).

Conviviality and Sociability in the Long Eighteenth Century: Restoration to Romanticism
Christoph Heyl (Univ. Duisburg-Essen) and Rémy Duthille (Univ. Bordeaux-Montaigne) are continuing the long tradition of the Landau-Paris Symposia on the Eighteenth Century, welcoming both established scholars of the field and early career researchers. The symposium focuses on the literature and culture of the British Isles of the period, but it is also open to topics relating to the British colonies, France, Germany, and further afield. The conference will include a panel of emerging scholars who are working on their PhD projects or are planning to begin a PhD project in the near future.

As part of its research programme “Court identities and the myth of Versailles in Europe: perception, adherence and rejection (18th-19th centuries)” (2017-…), the Centre de recherche du château de Versailles wishes to publish articles related to this subject on the Bulletin du Centre de recherche du château de Versailles. Research will be organised along five different lines, through which the idea of the “perfect court”, such as we find at Versailles, can be defined: organisational model, public and private areas in the residence, reigning and governing in Europe, palace and democracy, State and palace rituals.

Images of an accepted, hidden and celebrated image?
Célèbres ou anonymes, il s’agira de questionner l’identité des veuves afin de mieux connaître leur influence politique, intellectuelle et sociale en cherchant à savoir si leur veuvage s’est révélé être un atout ou une faiblesse. Comment l’image de cette femme veuve s’est-elle développée au cours des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles ? Et comment a-t-elle fait face à la représentation rousseauiste d’une femme mère dédiée à son foyer et à l’éducation de ses enfants, valeur montante de la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle ? La journée d’études propose de mieux cerner la figure de la veuve dans les arts non seulement en France, mais aussi en Europe.

Revolutionary eloquence and rhetorical traditions (18th-19th centuries)
Quel rapport une révolution politique, moment tout entier tendu vers le changement, et donc vers l'avenir, entretient-elle avec les modèles du passé ? Est-il possible de « se passer du passé » ? Le changement brutal, la « régénération » et la « table rase », leitmotive du discours de la Révolution française, ne sont-ils que de vains mots ? […] La question du rapport conflictuel et ambigu des révolutions politiques aux modèles du passé nous invite à réfléchir à la fois aux formes discursives, notamment rhétoriques, dont hérite la Révolution française, et à la manière dont cette dernière les récupère, les rejette ou les transforme, et à la fois à l'influence qu'exerce à son tour la Révolution française sur les discours des révolutions suivantes : là encore, s'agit-il d'une imitation (et, le cas échéant, de quel ordre ?), d'un refus, ou d'une métamorphose ?

The Myth of Versailles and European Courts, 18th and 19th centuries
This symposium is organised in conjunction with the research programme “Court identities and the myth of Versailles in Europe: perception, adherence and rejection (18th-19th centuries)” led by the Centre de recherche du château de Versailles. The aim is to analyse the modus operandi of the myth of Versailles in the monarchic Europe of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, taking into account the two contradictory yet complementary elements that characterise the idea of myth: the real and the reconstruction of the real. The focus of this conference will therefore be twofold: understanding how the different aspects specific to the identity of Versailles have fuelled an illusion, but also discerning how this illusion gave rise to other accomplishments, whether architectural, ritual or political.

Interior decoration and the pleasure of the senses (1700-1850)
Ce colloque souhaite revenir sur la part que tenait le plaisir sensoriel dans l’organisation des espaces intérieurs en Europe entre 1700 et 1850. Plusieurs traités d’architecture du XVIIIe siècle tels que celui de Boffrand (1745) ou plus tard de Le Camus de Mézières (1780) mettent l’accent sur l’importance des sens dans la disposition et la décoration des pièces. Ces textes soulignent que certains arrangements, pour reprendre le terme de l’époque, doivent créer une impression de plaisir et de bien-être sur ses usagers. Cette idée d’un décor qui éveille les différents organes de perception du corps humain dans le but de produire un effet sur le spectateur s’inscrit dans une approche sensualiste de l’architecture. Cette préoccupation est alors désignée par de nombreux auteurs sous les termes d’« agrément » et de « commodité » qui permettent d'exprimer, avant qu’il n’apparaisse au début du XIXe siècle, le concept de confort.

The art academy networks in the Enlightenment: issues and dynamics of exchange
This colloquium invites the rethinking of the role of provincial academies in the administration of the arts in the 18th century and in the formulation of ideas about them. Its ambition is to study this aspect of the history of the French regions in the context of a wider history of France and Europe and to do so by harnessing micro-historical and macro-historical methods. To what extent did artistic careers depend on academies for skills and/or reputation? What did art as an epistemological field gain in practice and thought in these places? What role did these institutions hold outside or in close association with academies in capital cities, given their institutional organisations, forms of sociability, and role as conduits for theoretical and practical knowledge? How did they interact with each other and with other geographical areas and other social circles (literary salons, freemason gatherings, and agricultural societies)?

Crucial du point de vueinstitutionnel et politique certes, car les anciens bailliages deviennent un canton inséré au seindu système confédéral helvétique. Crucial surtout du point de vue culturel, car cette époque marque l’essor d’une production éditoriale dont l’importance ne cessera de grandir tout au long du XIXe siècle, avec un impact croissant sur les débats et la scène culturelle de la Péninsule italienne, notamment milanaise.
