Cinema Left Undone: A Secret History of Central European and Soviet Films (1920-1990)
The international and interdisciplinary seminar seeks to explore the phenomenon of film scripts that were left undone. Sessions will focus on film projects whose screenplays have been preserved in archival collections but for which no footage was ever produced. Through discussions, the seminar aims to encourage the scholarly community to examine cases from various periods (1920-1930, 1930-1945, 1945-1968, 1968-1990) and from diverse regional contexts (Central Europe, Balkan contexts, Soviet countries).

L’événement vise à explorer les formes de réception, de mise en récit et d’instrumentalisation de cette figure fondatrice, à travers quatre axes : les mémoires conflictuelles, les iconographies, les patrimonialisations muséales et les circulations internationales.

Ukrainian music beyond borders: a study of its reception before and after 2024
This international symposium will examine the reception of musical works by Ukrainian composers in artistic institutions (such as Philharmonics, concert halls, artistic centers and festivals) and in the press (both specialized and non-specialized) since 2014. Does the perception of Ukrainian music differ between Ukraine and abroad? If so, what makes this difference? Reflections will integrate various European countries such as England, Germany, the Czech Republic and France, as well as in non-European countries.

À la croisée de l’évolution des sciences humaines, de la construction de la slavistique européenne, de l’histoire éditoriale et des transferts culturels, l’exploration des revues scientifiques se révèle être l’une des clefs permettant de comprendre la singularité de notre champ de recherche, ainsi les liens qui réunissent les chercheurs et définissent une entité qui peut être pensée comme une discipline. Cette journée d’étude se propose de s’interroger sur des questions qui concernent la préhistoire et l’histoire des revues européennes de slavistique : leurs fondateurs, leur évolution, leurs mutations et objectifs passés et actuels.

Des années 1880 aux années 1980, la dissidence/résistance estudiantine en Europe médiane rencontre souvent les mouvements contestataires dans d’autres parties du monde, alliant des contestations sociales aux luttes politiques et aux combats civiques. À l’occasion de ce colloque, il s’agira précisément d’étudier pendant cette période la presse étudiante dissidente/résistante produite aussi bien en Europe médiane que par des étudiants ressortissants de ces pays à l’étranger.

Revue « Europe : cultures, mémoires, identités » no. 1 / 2025 (premier numéro)
This journal is especially devoted to the study of the dynamics of memories and of cultural identity representations which have shaped the spaces of experience, the horizons of expectation, and the sociocultural imaginaries in “Europe’s Europes” in the 20th and 21st centuries. It provides a special outlet to the analysis grounded in cultural memory studies, and particularly in contemporary theories of “agonistic memory”, considered as a “third way”, that of the research of an equilibrium between the contraries embodied in the two competitive paradigms which have disputed their hegemony in the European area, particularly since the end of the Cold War: the cosmopolitan/ transnational one, and the national(ist)/ antagonistic one.

The Normalized, the Normalizers and Their Cinemas
Czechoslovak and Soviet Films of the 1970s
In both cinemas—that of the “normalizer” and that of the “normalized”—the political and economic stagnation reinforced by stochastic censorship and disillusioned society often leads to peculiar examples of mismatched ideology and aesthetics allowing for viewing them as accidental camp classics today. What structural changes do Czechoslovak studios undergo in the wake of the Warsaw Pact invasion? What thematic and aesthetic choices can be attributed to their moment in film history on both sides of the Iron Curtain? How does the soaring number of light entertainment genre like melodrama, comedy or musical correlate with the current events? Last but not least, the questions of actors’ agency in the face of state repression and censorship, of reevaluation of the immense corpus of films created during the late-Communist era feel relevant in Russian and Central European cinema and culture in general today.

En analysant, une décennie après la fin de la Guerre Froide, les changements survenus au cours du dernier quart du siècle passé sur le plan de l’expérience et des perceptions du temps. Le caractère multidimensionnel de la mémoire historique et ses rapports avec l’avenir dans le contexte des « transformations sans précédent » entraînées par le progrès technologique et par les défis climatiques représentent également des axes majeurs dans les recherches récentes en historiographie et en philosophie de l’histoire. À l’intersection de la mémoire historique avec celle politique, la nostalgie fonctionne comme « une épée à deux tranchants », en ce qu’elle semble être tant « un antidote émotionnel pour la politique », que « le meilleur instrument politique ». Les chercheurs de divers domaines sont encouragés à soumettre des propositions explorant plusieurs thèmes liés à la mémoire, à la nostalgie et à l’utopie en Europe post-Guerre Froide.

Patterns of Miscommunication in Contemporary East-Central European Cinema
We would like to invite scholars from the fields of film, media and communication studies, but also of linguistics, literary studies, political studies, anthropology, etc., to a joint reflection on East-Central European contemporary cinema. Much of East-Central European cinema after 1989 seems to thematize the issue of communicational barriers. If we posit, with Casetti, that films are sites of production and circulation of discourses, which can be interpreted as symbolic constructions referring to a cluster of meanings conveyed by a specific society at a moment of its existence, then what are the meanings transmitted by this cinematic reflection on communication blockage? What are the main cinematic discourses developed around miscommunication issues? To what extent do they create a common imaginary for this part of Europe?

Histoire au présent - lieu(x) sans demeure ? Est-éthique et politique des images en mouvements
L’actualité de la guerre en Ukraine renforce et rend nécessaire le discours sur le pouvoir des images et oblige à se poser la question de la force opératoire – dans la constitution d’un présent historique – des images médiatiques, artistiques et cinématographiques produites au moment même et au cœur des mouvements démocratiques de la fin du XXe et du début du XXIe siècle. De quelle manière les philosophies politiques et leurs discours imprègnent-elles ou éclairent-elles les images contemporaines (cinématographiques, artistiques et médiatiques) prises dans des conditions particulières des guerres et des révoltes du XXIe siècle ? Ce colloque propose entre autres de réfléchir sur les concepts paradoxaux de réel et de réalité face aux images, afin de s’interroger sur notre responsabilité de tout un chacun dans l’écriture de l’histoire au présent.

Beyond Russia’s Two Capitals: Regional Art Exhibitions in the Russian Empire
Art life in the regions of the Russian Empire has often been sidelined in the larger picture of art history, and this conference aims to bring this vital material to wider attention and stimulate discussion. If the 1905 relaxing of censorship vastly increased the number of exhibitions, local societies and individuals had already established regular and highly significant exhibitions all over the Empire. We invite colleagues to illuminate and discuss exhibitions that were held in the different regions, to consider their specific features and become part of this huge — and inevitably collaborative — project. We particularly welcome papers that address exhibitions before 1905.

“Émigré Europe”: Civil Engagement Transfers between Eastern and Western Europe, 1933-1989
Agency and action in Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish émigré communities during the Cold War
“Émigré Europe” seeks to explore the means and methods through which Central and Eastern European migrants were able to engage new or existing civil society structures within their host countries to set or express their own agendas and interact with their host societies on a range of levels, from local grassroots initiatives up to institutional European organizations and decision-making bodies. The conference invites scholars from different backgrounds to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion on the future potential of the research model for a wide-ranging study of European migration. We encourage contributors to think broadly about the porous geographical, temporal and political boundaries of European migration during and also immediately after the Cold War.

Naturalism in Painting 1870–1905

Perceived as the dominant artistic trend of the last third of the 19th century, yet, still difficult to delineate, Naturalism raises a number of conceptual issues. Naturalism, perhaps the most significant trend in European painting in the 1880s and 1890s, was present simultaneously in other European countries only a few years after its emergence in France, and appeared in equal quality from Scotland to Russia and Spain to Hungary. In order to better understand the current of Naturalism, the research group “Realism and Naturalism in Hungary and in Europe” based at the Hungarian National Gallery is organizing a 2-day international conference.

Berceuses, histoire(s) et conscience
L’objectif de ce colloque est de questionner un répertoire de « l’enfance des peuples » sur ce qu’il révèle de leurs histoires, de leurs circulations mais aussi des traumatismes qu’ils ont vécus, dans une perspective transhistorique et transdisciplinaire. Que nous apprennent les berceuses sur l’histoire parfois partielle ou fragmentaire des circulations et des migrations ? Quelle est l’importance de ces répertoires dans la transmission orale de l’histoire des peuples ? Existe-t-il une fonction « cathartique » des berceuses traitant d’épisodes traumatiques ? Quels sont les effets des berceuses, de leurs paroles et de la voix de leur interprète sur le cerveau de l’enfant dans les processus d’apaisement visant l’endormissement ?
