Domesticating Irish nature : past and contemporary approaches and practices
This international colloquium held in Grenoble, combining workshops, roundtables in addition to thematic panels, therefore also invites contributions that explore the representations at stake when the environmental history and prospective future of Ireland are involved. This exploration may be achieved through the intersecting lenses of ecocide, resource exploitation, and ecological resistance or use of nature as a place allowing for an escape from the usual modern globalized ultraliberal capitalistic rat race. We seek interdisciplinary interventions—historical, literary, legal, political, ecological, artistic—that investigate how nature in Ireland has been used, abused, and reclaimed in the face of economic pressures and environmental degradation.

Abondance et manque se posent comme des états opposés et sont pourtant tous deux contraires de l’équilibre, de l’harmonie, du neutre. La recherche ou la fuite d’une de ces deux extrémités met en jeu notre rapport aux ressources, au besoin et au désir, et nous invite à réfléchir à la question de la valeur, de la norme, et de l’excès. D’abord une question de survie fondamentale, notre rapport à l’abondance et au manque peut s’observer dans l'organisation de nos sociétés, de la langue, mais aussi dans nos recherches d’une esthétique et d’une expression. Ce colloque proposera une réflexion interdisciplinaire sur ces deux notions dans le monde anglophone.

Session 2 : L’expérience de la visite, du spectateur au critique
Le colloque L’expérience sensorielle dans les expositions d’art au XVIIIe siècle s’inscrit en finalité d’un projet de recherches financé par le conseil de recherche en sciences humaines du Canada (2018-2020) et mené sur la question du corps sensoriel. Il vise ainsi à définir la manière dont l’expérience du corps sensoriel des visiteurs se modèle lors de la visite des expositions d’art temporaires au moment où celles-ci émergent et s’établissent en Europe comme une pratique sociale nouvelle. Cette connaissance devrait permettre de mieux saisir le cheminement et la sensorialité inhérente des visiteurs de musées et de galeries à travers les siècles, et ce, jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

Fiction and new historical discourses
Ces deux journées vont finaliser le projet de l’UMR LARCA (uiversité de Paris-CNRS) « Faire le point sur les fictions historiques ». Elles seront consacrées à la façon dont la fiction grand public, historique ou pas, représente le passé en y inscrivant de nouveaux discours culturels, politiques, de race et de genre. Ce faisant, ces œuvres illustrent des sujets et groupes laissés en dehors du discours historique officiel, offrent une description du quotidien du passé, et commentent l’évolution contemporaine des sociétés via le prisme du passé.

Literature, arts and societies in the British Isles, 19th, 20th, 21st centuries
Ce colloque prolonge les travaux de deux séminaires communs aux laboratoires « Cultures anglo-saxonnes » (CAS, université Toulouse 2 Jean Jaurès) et Études montpelliéraines du monde anglophone (EMMA, université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3), portant respectivement sur la littérature et les arts, et sur la civilisation britannique. Son objectif sera de balayer le champ thématique ouvert par l’articulation des notions de singularité et de solidarité, de mobiliser les outils critique et théoriques nécessaires pour l’explorer, et d’affiner notre compréhension de la littérature, des arts et des sociétés des îles britanniques aux XIX-XX-XXIe siècles.

This 2016 workshop on contemporary US-UK photography will take on the notion of censorship. With photography as its starting point, this edition aims to extend the debate to include the contemporary image on the whole. It is interested in the intermedial forays of other artistic forms in the practice of photographers (art installations, video and/or audio productions, performance, urban art practices, text/image interactions). How does the very artistic form/medium become in itself a means of expression and commitment when confronted with censorship, a means to create unity against censorship, a tool for identity expression of a group or of a minority, to circumvent constraints, or thrive upon these limits and generate creative impetus from them?

Au moment de la réédition de la célèbre revue Midi-minuit fantastique (Rouge profond) et dans une période où le genre fantastique / horrifique est particulièrement dynamique tant au cinéma que dans les séries télévisées, il semble opportun de faire retour sur le rôle joué par la Hammer Films, studio indépendant britannique qui, vingt ans après Universal, a fait revivre les grandes figures mythiques (Dracula, Frankenstein, la momie, le loup-garou etc.) en leur donnant une incarnation modernisée plus conforme à l’évolution de la société et des mœurs en Angleterre en particulier.

From the power of images to images of power, this workshop will explore the representations of power and the power of representation in contemporary American and British photography. What is photography capable of doing? Whether in the form of a public person, the environment of power (emblematic places and explicit or underlying forms) or its symbolism, what is photography capable of revealing about power itself? Political, institutional, economic or social power all depend upon a system of relations or tensions between groups or individuals (accepted, rejected, questioned, expressed visually or internalized) participating in the construction of the identity, myths or memories of the American or British nations. In what manner does photography enhance or contribute to this construction or deconstruction of the notion of identity and nation?

How do we globalize the long eighteenth century?
Quelle globalisation pour le long XVIIIe siècle ?
Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

Two professorships are available at the Courtauld Institute to present the best recent scholarship on historical American art. A twelve-week professorship requires administering one full-term course integrated with the institute’s curriculum and participating in other scholarly activities. A one-week intensive professorship entails a public scholarly event, a seminar, and a special visit to a London gallery, archive, collection, or library relevant to American art history. Habitually characterised as a late-appearing variant upon the Victorian Quest Romance, The Lost World in fact marked the beginning of Arthur Conan Doyle’s prolonged investigation of science, ideology and belief under the inhibiting constraints of early twentieth-century modernity. The narratives span from 1912 to 1929 and this new collection will be dedicated to re-evaluating the narratives, their author, the wider culture that he inhabited and the legacy of his work for the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. We are interested in work that treats the texts either directly or tangentially through other aspects of Conan Doyle’s life and thought. -

Irish self-portraits: the artist in curved mirrors
Si l’Irlande peut se targuer de posséder une collection nationale d’autoportraits, l’art de l’autoportrait en littérature et dans les arts visuels reste encore largement inexploré. Certes, la pratique de l’autoportrait marque une tentative de plonger au fond de soi-même mais la représentation qui en découle n’est ni simple ni directe. Les artistes mettent en scène leur propre identité et leur propre personnage, se jouant de la célébrité et de leur rayonnement d’artiste, montrant de l’irrespect ou du mépris pour toute forme de canon ou d’usage. Le miroir dans lequel l’artiste se contemple est ainsi souvent un miroir courbe. L’objet de cette conférence, organisée par le Centre Interlangues TIL de l’université de Bourgogne, est d’analyser les diverses stratégies à l’œuvre dans l’art de l’autoportrait.
