The Spatial Turn of the 1980’s shifted the attention of scholars in Humanities, Social, and Cultural Studies towards questions of human interaction with landscape and the physical environment. At the same time, the term space was defined as more than just physical places, rather, social spaces and the production of such in the context of human interaction became the leading research focus. This conference seeks to develop the research on spatial perception in ancient societies by gathering scholars of any discipline in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Sciences to discuss spatial concepts from their own disciplinary perspective.

Bone objects during the Roman and Early Byzantine periods

Ancient bone objects have been found in relatively large quantities in the entire Mediterranean, from Spain to Syria and Egypt to France, where they were manufactured between the Neolithic and Medieval periods. The art of carving animal bones involves especially antler and horn. However, the spectrum of the worked bone objects recovered from Anatolia, rest of the eastern Mediterranean, Near East, the Black Sea area and Balkans is very varied, and reflects different characteristics of Graeco-Roman and Early Byzantine daily life. In these areas they were also utilised as grave goods secondarily. They were exported or imported over the entire ancient Graeco-Roman and Early Byzantine worlds. In this conference papers dealing with ancient artefacts or objects manufactured by bone, antler, ivory, animal teeth, mother of pearl and cockleshell are included. Focus will be on bone objects between the first century B.C. and the sixth century A.D.

Lexique, morphologie et usages du « petit matériel » en forme de tablette
Ce workshop se donne quatre objectifs : recenser les différents types de tabellae, tesserae et sortes attestés dans le monde romain, en croisant la documentation matérielle et les références littéraires, épigraphiques ou juridiques relatives à ces objets ; établir une typologie générale du « petit matériel » en forme de tablette, afin de faciliter l’identification d’objets souvent mal classés dans les fonds des musées et les collections ; réfléchir aux traductions proposées pour rendre ces termes et aux équivalences linguistiques latin-grec, afin de les clarifier et de les homogénéiser ; poser les bases d’un travail collectif d’édition du « petit matériel » antique en forme de tablette.

From the Bronze Age to the Islamic Period
The aim of the symposium is to study the overland and maritime routes of the Arabian Peninsula and the exchanges they made possible, through archaeology, history, philology, religion and life sciences. This topic will be addressed in the longue durée, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic period. The symposium will also examine the networks of exchanges with border regions such as the Indian subcontinent, the Horn of Africa and Egypt, as well as the empires of the Ancient Near East, and the Greek and Roman empires.

14th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Bringing together specialists of the Ancient Near Eastern and Ancient Greek worlds, this international congress will discuss the appearance during the Iron Age I-II of new figures of power and of power management, opposing or presenting political alternatives to the ideologies and socio-economic functioning of the dominant power systems, thus leading, at times, to significant political changes. The debate may highlight the transformative capacity of ancient political systems, going beyond the usual opposition between the extreme conservatism recognized in Near Eastern despotisms, centralized but also often imperialist, and, on the other hand, the evolutionary tendency attributed to the political systems of the Greek world.

Volumen est une revue de vulgarisation scientifique éditée depuis 2008 par l’Association d’étude antique néo-louvaniste (ASBL) Roma. Publiée en français, au rythme d’une fois par an, la revue internationale souhaite favoriser la diffusion des travaux qui traitent de manière novatrice des civilisations antiques et de leurs rapports. Volumen s’adresse à un public diversifié, composé de spécialistes et de non spécialistes ; pour cela, les articles doivent être rédigés dans une langue à la fois précise et soignée mais accessible aux lecteurs non spécialisés. Le prochain numéro de la revue annuelle Volumen sera consacré aux jeux, jouets et sports durant l’Antiquité. Une section « Varia » complètera ce numéro.

Archéologie de la production céramique et des espaces artisanaux : regards croisés
From the 8th millennium BCE onwards, pottery production developed in Southwestern Asia and became a significant trait of Neolithic societies. Ceramic material is widely adopted. It represented a revolution on several scales and quickly constituted an important part of production activities. Thus, the objective of this workshop is to propose a transdisciplinary meeting about the methodologies of studying pottery manufacture sites, through examples from various contexts from prehistoric times to the contemporary period, and with a special interest in alternative approaches.

Judas the Galilean: the Man and his Significance
In 6 CE, while Quirinius was taking the census of Judea, the first Jewish opposition aroused against Roman presence in the region, led by a man known as Judas the Galilean (or the Gaulanite). According to Josephus, all subsequent troubles were the fact of this man. But who was Judas? Was he so important in the history? Was he even challenging Roman authorities? As usual in similar cases, the scholarly debates are endless about the man and his significance. This conference aims to survey all of the many faces of Judas in recent historiography and to discuss each evidence in order to estimate the true place of Judas in history.

La troisième journée d’étude des jeunes chercheurs de l’UMR 7044 Archimède, intitulée « In-betweeness, à la recherche des intermédiaires » abordera des thématiques relatives à l’intermédiarité en sciences de l’Antiquité, couvrant des ères chrono-culturelles s’étendant de l’Égypte du Moyen Empire à l’Antiquité tardive. Un temps d’échange important est prévu pour permettre la discussion et encourager les jeunes chercheurs à développer et présenter leurs recherches face à un public de spécialistes et de chercheurs confirmés.
