Residue and Oblivion: Manufacturing Toxic Legacies
Cross-reflections based on the exemplary case of asbestos. 20th - 21st centuries
Several studies in environmental history and the sociology of science have already shown how, regarding asbestos as other toxic substances, the narrative of the sudden “awareness” of their harmful effects was a fiction, actually and that a number of stakeholders were well aware of asbestos pathogenic effects as early as the early 20th century. The circulation and appropriation of this knowledge did not take place in linear fashion. Now, what are the possible trajectories of a toxic substance after it has been banned? This is the question this conference aims to answer.

The Culture of Suspicion: Creating Suspects in the Age of Revolutions
The workshop will examine the impact of suspicion in the age of the Atlantic Revolutions (from around 1770 to 1830) in Europe and its colonial territories. We invite contributions that focus on the question of how individuals or groups of people became suspects of hostility towards the existing monarchical or revolutionary order, and thus potentially subversive. Contributions may deal with the narrative construction of suspicion as well as the practical surveillance measures and juridical proceedings that were used against the suspects.

Les Rencontres du XIXe siècle
Depuis 2019, en partenariat avec la Société d’histoire de la révolution de 1848 et des révolutions du XIXe siècle, les Rencontres du XIXe siècle réunissent des jeunes chercheuses et chercheurs, issu·e·s de différentes universités et appartenant à divers champs historiographiques, pour discuter d’une notion spécifique. Après « Petites et Grandes Rencontres » (Paris, 2019), « Populaire » (Toulouse, 2021), « Nature » (Dijon, 2022),» Progrès » (Lille, 2023) et « Révolution[S] » (Le Mans, 2024), la sixième édition des Rencontres aura pour thème « Empires ». Elles auront lieu à Clermont-Ferrand les 4 et 5 juin2025, avec le soutien du Centre d’Histoire « Espaces et Cultures » (Université Clermont Auvergne) et de la Société d’Histoire de la Révolution de 1848. La leçon inaugurale sera prononcée par David Todd, professeur d’histoire contemporaine à Sciences Po Paris.

Séminaire « Analyse de l’or et de ses usages comme matériau pictural » (AORUM) 2025
De l’or chez Raphaël, Dürer, mais aussi Carrache, Vermeer et Rembrandt ? À rebours d’une histoire de l’art « aveugle » à la présence de ce matériau, le programme « Analyse de l’or et de ses usages comme matériau pictural » (AORUM) éclaire les usages de l’or par les peintres européens des XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Comment l’interprétation de leurs œuvres s’enrichit-elle de la prise en compte de ce métal comme un matériau pictural, dont la relation à la lumière, par son éclat métallique, le distingue des pigments habituels ? Les séances de ce séminaire interdisciplinaire (histoire de l’art, sciences de la conservation, optique, humanités numériques) ouvrent un dialogue entre les travaux de spécialistes invités et les premiers résultats du programme.

La historiografía de los últimos treinta años ha centrado gran parte de su atención en la cuestión de la circulación, reclamándose de una historia “global”, “conectada”, “transnacional” o “imperial”—cada una de estas etiquetas define el tema a su manera, a veces en competencia con las demás—. Esta obsesión contemporánea por “lo que circula”, común a todas ellas, fue una reacción a la historiografía de los años 1950-1980, considerada demasiado “fijista”. Esta última retrataba sociedades “cerradas”, en las que sus miembros, anclados en sus comunidades, aún no eran actores en su mayoría, y se veían confinados al horizonte inmediato de su ciudad, barrio o pueblo, y prisioneros de las propias identidades y culturas locales que se consideraba que los caracterizaban.

Following the principle of promoting open access research in progress, the Bulletin du centre d’études médiévales d’Auxerre (Bucema) emphasizes the interdisciplinarity between human and social sciences, as well as natural sciences and mathematics. It aims to publish contributions offering new methods, reporting on experiences in digital humanities and new technologies, and questioning the epistemological and conceptual implications of research on the Middle-Ages. It also features in-depth studies and reviews in the fields of archaeology, history and history of art, and offers insight on the most recent research.

The Challenge of Inclusivity and Democratic Government in Social Contract Theory
Social contract approaches seek to explain the origins of political obligations but are also recognized as tools of social change. In the face of classic social contract philosophers, who maintained that normative legitimacy may be grounded in hypothetical agreement, recent accusations of exclusivity and anthropocentrism have challenged contract theories’ relevance. And yet, in spite of these challenges, contract theories have experienced a resurgence. This conference seeks to engage with this second wave of theories and reflect on the challenges of inclusivity and democratic government within contract theory from an interdisciplinary perspective.

This call for papers targets a wide range of disciplinary fields (e.g. history, art history, heritage science, literature, philosophy). This peer-reviewed edited volume aims to understand the uses and meanings of Gold as it pervades all areas of European societies, on a methodologically restricted time-frame (1450-1550). It intends to move beyond traditional research, so as to map out the social and cultural dynamics of this precious and versatile material in Renaissance Europe.

Les transmissions des savoirs dans l’espace transatlantique au XIXe et XXe siècles
Prenant pour point de départ la Révolution française et l’indépendance latino-américaine dans le long XIXe siècle (Hobsbawn, 2012), dont la transmission des savoirs s’effectue dans l’espace atlantique dans une perspective diplomatique, et couvrant tout le XXe siècle, où s’établissent de nouvelles dynamiques politiques et communicationnelles, telles que la fin de l’Union soviétique, la fondation de l’Union européenne et la massification d’Internet, cette journée d’étude cherche à rassembler des chercheuses et chercheurs des domaines les plus divers dont les recherches prennent en compte la circulation des idées, les transferts et les médiations culturelles, les circuits économiques et symboliques et l’ensemble du réseau médiatique complexe qui transmet les informations et les savoirs dans l’espace transatlantique.

Lexis, framing, timings, 19th‒21st century in the Middle East
Is preaching consubstantial with crisis? Did the different religious traditions present in the Middle East come to grip with the notion of crisis during the contemporary period? This workshop examines the similarities and divergences between preaching endeavours by the different religious traditions and the transformations in religious discourse in the Middle East from the end of the 19th century onwards. Through a comparative and diachronic analysis, it aims to identify what "constitutes a crisis" for particular religious actors at a given moment in the contemporary history of the Middle East (e.g. military defeat, feelings of inferiority vis-à-vis Europe, demographic decline of a given religious group, secularisation of institutions, rise of atheism, etc.)

For a workshop on cooperative ensembles (1770–1890), taking place on 12/13 September 2025 at the Université de Genève, we are calling for short presentations followed by open discussions covering topics such as governance, administration, financial management, inclusion/exclusion of members, their social position, rehearsal practices, artistic leadership, or stage plans. Participants are invited to present source material such as minutes of meetings, statutes, reports on cooperative decision-making processes, annotated sheet music, or images of ensembles, which will form the basis for discussions.

Il s'agit d'éclairer différents points de vue, de questionner la manière dont la musique est modélisée à travers les prismes de la performance, de la trace et de l'hybridation.

Circulation of objects, practices, and techniques between Central and Western Europe (1000-1600)
This doctoral workshop aims to explore approaches that interrogate the flow of objects, practices, and techniques within the broadly understood realm of material culture, in contexts of production or consumption. The title of this workshop focuses on geographical Europe, but the emphasis on the European Middle Ages is first and foremost a way of accounting for a material unity on a European scale, beyond political entities. Firstly, it turns out that, when everyday objects used by a large number of people become mass-consumed products, forms of standardization on a large spatial scale must be questionned, as well as its consequences, i.e. a number of similarities.

De David à Delacroix, de Cézanne à Matisse, d’Ellsworth Kelly à Gina Pane en passant par Hélène Delprat, les Beaux-Arts de Paris ont accueilli plusieurs dizaines de milliers d’aspirants-artistes entre 1780 à 1980, dont de nombreux étudiant·es étranger·es. Dans le cadre de l'exposition « Souvenirs de jeunesse », une soirée dédiée aux trajectoires de ces étudiant·es est organisée, réunissant table-ronde et performance.

Imaginaires politiques, sociologie électorale, pratiques militantes. (Europe, 1918-1945)
Le présent colloque propose de relancer le chantier de la place du vote dans l’accession des mouvements fascistes au pouvoir – ou dans leurs aspirations à le faire – dans l’idée d’éclairer la place de la dynamique électorale dans la faillite des démocraties et leur processus de désintégration. Le cadre chronologique creste celui, strict et traditionnel, des années 1918-1945, où se multiplièrent, partout en Europe, des mouvements fascistes et où s’installèrent dans certains pays, des dictatures fascistes ou des gouvernements autoritaires comportant une composante fasciste. Trois directions principales seront explorées : le programme politique du fascisme, l’histoire matérielle des campagnes électorales et du vote, enfin la sociologie électorale.

Since 2023, the PIOMIG project “Pioneers of Global Migration (16th- 21st centuries)”, supported by the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme et de la Société - Sud-Est (MSHS-SE) and the Institut Convergences Migrations (ICM), has been studying so-called “pioneer” migratory phenomena, which lie upstream and on the margins of the major migratory currents already well identified in scholarly literature. After organizing a first workshop, which enabled us to better define this notion (https://epi-revel.univ-cotedazur.fr/publication/pionniers-migrations), we propose to convene a symposium on December 4, 5 and 6, 2025. This symposium will provide an opportunity to present the original material collected and analysed in recent years, and to compare it with other approaches and studies on related subjects.

Conversations critiques, interdisciplinaires et internationales
La crise actuelle, marquée par la droitisation des sociétés, la précarisation et l’aggravation des inégalités, se nourrit d’un système néolibéral déshumanisant. La 30e conférence internationale de la Société Simone de Beauvoir, prévue en ligne du 16 au 19 juin 2025, se penchera sur deux objectifs majeurs. D’abord, il est urgent de réactualiser la pensée radicale de Beauvoir, souvent perçue comme déconnectée des enjeux actuels. Ensuite, il s’agit de la mettre en dialogue avec des pensées critiques contemporaines, comme le féminisme, le postcolonialisme, ou l’écoféminisme, afin de créer des convergences et de nourrir un projet émancipateur commun.
