Animal Behaviour and Environments: Ecological Perspectives from Antiquity to the Present
This conference aims, through a resolutely interdisciplinary approach, to explore the relations between animals and their environments. Bringing together scholars in ancient and medieval philology, the history of zoological knowledge, and contemporary ecological sciences, the event seeks to examine how living beings interact with their surroundings—and how these interactions have been conceptualised, described, and modelled from Antiquity to the present. Two main thematic axes will structure the discussion: 1. Animals and Environments: Ancient and Modern Ecologies; 2. Animal Ecological Awareness: Perception, Umwelt, and Narrative Models

The Exploitation of Subsurface Resources in Ancient Greece
The Greek term metallon may refer to either a mine or a quarry, whether used for the extraction of rock, ore, or salt. In this sense, it does not denote the nature of the resources themselves, but rather their shared origin: the subsurface. This common provenance opens the door to a cross-disciplinary reflection on the exploitation and management of such resources in ancient Greece. In recent decades, the study of the past has seen a growing interest in environmental questions. A key dimension of this research concerns the relationship between ancient societies and their environment: how did human groups interact with their surroundings to meet their needs, build infrastructure, or produce everyday objects? In this field, the rise of interdisciplinary approaches – at the intersection of archaeological sciences and historical inquiry – combined with recent methodological advances, has led to major developments in the field.

Nouvelles perspectives sur la représentation du monde naturel
Le colloque réunira des communications qui seront structurées tout particulièrement sur : le « sentiment » ou la « perception de la nature » de l’Antiquité à la Renaissance. Il conviendra alors de renouveler notre compréhension sur les relations entre l’homme et la nature à partir de l’examen des vestiges archéologiques, des textes, de l’iconographie. Il pourra s’agir à la fois d’examiner comment la nature était introduite, dès l’Antiquité, au sein des résidences privées (peintures, mosaïques, aménagements topographiques…) et publiques (palais, lieux de culte …) ou encore ce que peut signifier l’attrait pour le paysage, qui repose très souvent sur sa domination et son contrôle, pour la constitution de l’individu et des préoccupations écologiques.

The aim of the workshop is to study the perception of hazards and the understanding of natural risk in ancient and medieval Europe. This multidisciplinary project will bring together the skills of archaeologists, geoarchaeologists, environmental historians and specialists in cartography and landscapes. The aim is to develop and cross-fertilise methodological approaches based on case studies.

Séminaire BioChronos
Cette nouvelle édition du séminaire BioChronos organisé par le département PAST de l’Institut des sciences de l’évolution de Montpellier réunit, le temps d’une demi-journée, des chercheurs en Histoire, bioarchéologie et paléo-environnements pour appréhender l’évolution des environnements littoraux méditerranéens au cours des temps historiques. A partir de deux fenêtres géographiques, à savoir la France méridionale et le Nord-Est du littoral adriatique, les trois disciplines croiseront leurs résultats pour dresser un bilan actualisé de l’état des faunes et flores des deux derniers millénaires et de l’impact des sociétés humaines sur celles-ci.

Workshop en hommage à Georges Pichard
En presque cinquante ans d’activités de recherche, Georges Pichard (1939-2022), historien moderniste et archiviste hors pair, a laissé une contribution majeure, originale et incomparable pour la connaissance de l’histoire de l’environnement de la Basse-Provence, de la vallée du Rhône et du sud des Alpes. Cette œuvre unique, dont la forme s’inscrit dans le courant historique de l’École des Annales, surtout permis de mettre en lumière la formidable richesse des sources documentaires originales et des premiers enregistrements instrumentaux utilisables pour écrire une histoire méridionale du climat jusqu’alors inédite. Cette histoire du climat, aujourd’hui champ de recherche interdisciplinaire, englobe sa reconstruction à partir des sources écrites et des archives naturelles et l’utilisation des reconstructions pour l’étude de l’histoire des sociétés. C’est ce second aspect, l’écriture de l’histoire des interactions climat-société, qui sera au cœur des deux journées de ce workshop qui se déroulera les 21 et 22 novembre 2023.

An environmental history of work and labour
The Réseau universitaire de chercheurs et chercheuses en histoire environnementale (RUCHE, French-speaking network in environmental history, founded in 2009) and the Association française pour l’histoire des mondes du travail (AFHMT, French network for work and labour history, founded in 2013), organize this international joint conference, which aims to put this interdependence into historical perspective. Its ambition is, on the one hand, to contribute to a stronger dialogue between these two major historiographical fields (work/labour and the environment) and, on the other hand, to bring back on the agenda the long-standing but yet unachieved project of an environmental history of work.

29th EAA Annual Meeting
From the 4th century BC onwards, the expansion of the Roman Empire, eventually, over large parts of Europe had a significant impact on society. The creation of a new transport network and the emergence of cities were two of the most important and lasting changes brought about. As Rome expanded and developed contacts with other cultures far beyond the Mediterranean, new tastes and social practices were also acquired, often manifested in material culture. This session aims to explore Roman commerce and economy through different lines of evidence (e.g. archaeobiological remains, ceramics, inscriptions, landscape archaeology etc.). In addition, it aims to investigate the role of the ancient transport network in the process of urbanisation and/or the acquisition of new ‘tastes’.

La première journée sera consacrée au monde grec, la seconde au monde romain.

Crossed views on the construction of river landscapes
Today's rivers are the result of a complex and continuous metamorphosis in which the human footprint has become major since the industrial revolution. Its recent impact has largely obscured the characteristics of older river landscapes. The aim of this conference is to question, in an interdisciplinary perspective, the sources for studying the dynamics and/or the social, technical, legal and political contexts of fluvial or fluviomaritime spaces, to outline their reconstitution and to model their evolution until the beginning of the 20th century. Facilities and port spaces, temporalities of construction of fluvial landscapes and causes, modalities and consequences - ecological, hydrological, archaeological - of the transition to new landscape sequences will be questioned.

Wood supply, agro-sylvo-pastoral activities and forest
The objective of this workshop is to engage an open discussion among palaeobotanists (palynologists, dendrochronologists and anthracologists in particular) and historians (studying iconography, written and archaeological sources) to lead to methodological reflection. Our aim is also to question the sources available to study the forest cover and its management, but also to discuss the interpretation of these sources. It is also a matter of highlighting the limits and biases of each method as well as the potential of comparing sources.

Practices, know-how and movements from Protohistory to the 21st century
Numerous hemp kilns abandoned in the countryside, particularly in western France, remind us of the importance of hemp canvas production during modern and contemporary times. Today, our society is re-discovering this plant which appears to be of interest to make agriculture more environment-friendly. Despite this glorious economic past, the history of hemp as a textile crop has yet to be written. To remedy this limitation, an interdisciplinary approach try to write the intertwined history of men and hemp.

New sedimentary cores drilled in a marine palaeochannel crossing the city in Antiquity will be discussed. Occupying Space during Bronze and Iron Ages: From site to landscape
6th Doctoral Meetings of the European School of Protohistory of Bibracte
Archaeology and Space have always been intrinsically connected. On one hand, different attributes of the environment affected human beings forcing them to adapt their behaviour in order to succeed, while on the other, in doing so, communities have influenced their surrounding spaces by transforming them, in some cases irreversibly. As all human actions are by definition immersed in space, for this year’s meeting we have decided to approach the questions of understanding and interpreting these complex processes looking through the prism of scale on which they happen. The extent of these ranges from the processes that occur on the small levels in the spaces of archaeological sites extending to the larger levels when dealing with the narrative of cultural landscapes. Sessions will provide reflection on the social and spatial aspects of archaeological sites and landscapes and will incorporate themes related to subsistence, economy, social behaviour and ideology within the timespan of the European Bronze and Iron Ages.

Ce colloque interdisciplinaire est organisé dans le cadre du programme Watertraces, soutenu par la fondation Amidex d’Aix-Marseille Université. Il a pour objectif principal d’encourager un dialogue étroit entre les disciplines archéologiques et environnementales, en présentant et en interprétant des études de cas datées de l’Antiquité méditerranéenne, et plus précisément du 4e s. av. J.-C. au 1er s. apr. J.-C. Il s’agit de présenter des études novatrices sur des sites en partie sélectionnés sur la base de critères géologiques et hydrogéologiques.

La revue Dynamiques Environnementales souhaite réaliser un numéro centré sur la thématique de l’interaction entre les sociétés humaines du passé avec les phénomènes littoraux. Ce volume a pour ambition de croiser les approches archéologiques, géoarchéologiques et géomorphologiques afin de comprendre les dynamiques milieu/société, tout en dressant les paléo-environnements historiques. Cette thématique ne prévoit ni limites géographiques, ni cadre chronologique précis.

À ce titre, les sites archéologiques et les paysages qui résultent de l’interaction entre facteurs naturels et humains, entretiennent des liens particuliers. L’objet de ces rencontres est de partager réflexions et expériences sur la manière de conjuguer aujourd’hui l’étude et la mise en valeur des patrimoines archéologiques et naturels.
