Material, use, typology, chronology and contexts

We are glad to inform you that an international e-conference on worked shells in the ancient world will take place on May 20, 2026 on Zoom.us. This forthcoming online meeting will be an archaeomalacological workshop in honour of Jean-Paul Descœudres from the Universities of Geneva and Sydney. Papers are invited to present evidence of human collection and modification of shells from all over the ancient world (especially the Mediterranean) and over a large chronological range (from Prehistory to Antiquity with a focus on the Roman world). We are interested in worked shells rather than those used as food or as environmental indicators.

The aim of the symposium is to study the overland and maritime routes of the Arabian Peninsula and the exchanges they made possible, through archaeology, history, philology, religion and life sciences. This topic will be addressed in the longue durée, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic period. The symposium will also examine the networks of exchanges with border regions such as the Indian subcontinent, the Horn of Africa and Egypt, as well as the empires of the Ancient Near East, and the Greek and Roman empires.

Knowledge productions and their diffusion in Protohistoric societies: comparative and multidisciplinary approaches

This international symposium brings together transdisciplinary researchers in order to renew the outlook on European Protohistory. Protohistoric societies having left few texts, can sites or artefacts tell us about the immaterial production of knowledge? Recent researches on comparatism, in archaeoastronomy, ethnomathematics, paleopathology or bioarchaeology, show that these societies produced knowledge and transmitted it, raising the question of the exchange of this knowledge and technologies. The texts produced by the contemporaries of the Celts show a complex and codified culture, corroborated by the found artefacts. Our gaze must therefore depart from a disciplinary compartmentalization, researches combining archaeology, astronomy, artificial intelligence, mathematics, provide interesting answers on this question.

Antiquitas, la revue spécialisée en archéologie, en égyptologie, en histoire ancienne, en histoire médiévale, et en histoire de l’Afrique précoloniale, vous invite à soumettre des articles pour son deuxième numéro qui paraîtra en juin 2022. Cette revue, à la fois électronique et physique, sollicite des articles sur l’archéologie, l’Égypte ancienne, la Rome Ancienne, la Grèce antique, le Moyen Âge et l’Afrique précoloniale, et quelquefois des varias, des comptes rendus d’ouvrages, de revues et de cinéma ainsi que des hommages à nos illustres disparus.

The inter-African journal in archaeology, Egyptology, ancient history, medieval history and the history of precolonial Africa

La revue Antiquitas bientôt en ligne, verra le jour au premier semestre de l’an 2021 grâce à l’appui de nombreuses universités africaines comme l’université Omar Bongo (Libreville/Gabon), l’université Alassane Ouattara (Bouaké/Côte d’Ivoire), l’université Marien N’Gouabi (Brazzaville/Congo), l’université de Lomé (Togo), l’université de Yaoundé (Cameroun), l’université de N’Gaoundéré (Cameroun), l’université d’Abomey-Calavi (Benin) et l’université Félix Houphouët-Boigny (Abidjan/Côte d’Ivoire). C’est donc une revue de rang international qui entend valoriser la recherche scientifique, donner plus de visibilité aux productions des enseignants-chercheurs, des chercheurs et autres experts, et offrir à un plus large public des supports de connaissance plus accessibles. Pour toutes ces raisons, elle s’est dotée d’un conseil scientifique et administratif regroupant des enseignants chevronnés qui ont fait et continuent de faire leur preuve sur le continent et au-delà.

Éducation, otages et alliances matrimoniales dans le monde celte

Cette session sera consacrée aux « déménagements » qui jouaient un rôle majeur dans les relations sociales des peuples celtes : l'éducation des enfants assurée par une famille alliée (fosterage en anglais, pagerie en vieux français), les mariages exogames, les individus se portant caution personnelle pour un tiers, les otages interclaniques et internationaux..., soit une problématique trop rarement explorée jusqu'ici mais pourtant d'un très grand intérêt.

Violence and politics from Antiquity to the present day

Selon le mot de Karl Marx, la violence est l’accoucheuse de l’histoire et, au centre de l’histoire, qu’on le veuille ou non, se dresse le politique avec son cortège d’acteurs qui, périodiquement, entretiennent, écartent ou subissent la violence sous diverses formes, parfois dans la brutalité la plus extrême. Les contradictions sautent aux yeux : en créant le droit et la justice, le politique est censé réprimer et éradiquer la violence ; l’organisation sociale elle-même semble être une réponse au chaos primitif et à la violence de la horde primitive. Voilà quelques réflexions qui guideront cette journée d’étude transhistorique consacrée aux rapports entre violence et politique.

Pour cette cinquième édition, la matinée sera dévolue à la présentation de travaux de jeunes chercheurs associés aux différents laboratoires d’Archéologie de la MMSH, dans le but de confronter les méthodes, intérêts, champs d'analyse et d'interprétations autours de thématiques communes. L’après-midi sera consacrée cette année à un forum sur les métiers de l’Archéologie réunissant de nombreux professionnels, destiné à présenter les différents débouchés de la discipline.
