Past and future of archaeological collections
Field exploration, movements, preservation (19th-21st c.)
This symposium will concentrate on the creation, transmission and movements of prehistoric collections –including natural history specimens, human remains, and artefacts–, from the colonial era to the present day. Particular emphasis will be placed on collections from Southeast Asia, however, case studies drawn from other historical and geographical contexts will also be represented.

From the Bronze Age to the Islamic Period
The aim of the symposium is to study the overland and maritime routes of the Arabian Peninsula and the exchanges they made possible, through archaeology, history, philology, religion and life sciences. This topic will be addressed in the longue durée, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic period. The symposium will also examine the networks of exchanges with border regions such as the Indian subcontinent, the Horn of Africa and Egypt, as well as the empires of the Ancient Near East, and the Greek and Roman empires.

European Roundtable on Southeast Asian Archaeology
Current Research and Perspectives
Europe-based researchers have a long tradition of Southeast Asian archaeological scholarship. A great deal has changed since our community last met in 2017 at EurASEAA in Poznan, Poland—both in Europe and in Southeast Asia, in academic and political spheres, and with global cultural shifts. We believe that it is essential that our community continues to meet to promote scientific exchanges and discuss thematic developments and prospects for the discipline and students. The 8th and morning of the 9th will be devoted to presentations of current research projects.

14th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Politisations des archéologies : fouilles, conflits et mémoires
En nous montrant le site de Sobibor, où les nazis implantèrent un camp d’extermination avant de tenter d’en effacer les traces, le film « Sheol » d’Arnaud Sauli nous le rappelle : contemporainement ou des décennies plus tard, les restes matériels des activités humaines se retrouvent fréquemment au cœur d’enjeux et conflits juridiques, politiques ou encore moraux. Les savoirs « archéologiques », relatifs à ces restes matériels, jouent dès lors un rôle essentiel dans ces conflits, et qu’il s’agisse des savoirs développés scientifiquement que ceux possédés par tout un chacun. Dans ce séminaire, deux historiens des sciences et une ethnologue emploieront trois cas pour décliner les manières dont les rapports se nouent entre les enjeux du présent et ces restes matériels d’activités passées : qu’il s’agisse d’activités anciennes ou récentes, belliqueuses ou quotidiennes, et relatives aux constructions nationales en des contextes proches ou lointains, étatiques ou infra-étatiques (Suisse, Palestine et Israël, Pays Basque et Espagne).

Incarnation, matérialités, cosmogonies » pris dans une double approche ethnologique / anthropologique et archéologique, ce qui permet d’aborder les terrains et les concepts à partir des pierres naturelles ou travaillées par l’homme. Cela peut être entrepris dans le domaine de la culture matérielle, par exemple de la pierre taillée, gravée ou creusée, ou dans celui de la modélisation anthropique du paysage pour des raisons stratégiques, agricoles, symboliques ou esthétiques.

Pour cette table ronde, nous souhaitons vous convier à un banquet scientifique, afin de nous plonger dans ce sujet particulier que l’on retrouve dans différentes disciplines, mais non de manière exclusive. L’objectif de ces journées est que les participants, auditeurs comme intervenants puissent réfléchir en quoi consiste le festin, dans quelle cosmologie il intervient, par rapport à quelle conception sociale, ceci plus spécifiquement dans des sociétés stratifiées et des religions à sacrifice.

Archaeology and the history taste in Phoenician and Punic societies
Cette école thématique s’inscrit dans le programme de recherche et formation « Archéologie du goût en Méditerranée occidentale dans les sociétés phénicienne et punique ». Elle constitue la première action du programme et fixera les termes, les contours et les enjeux du débat. Pour cela, nous nous interrogerons sur la question du goût dans les sociétés phénicienne et punique, en nous limitant à deux aspects majeurs que sont : le goût comme construction culturelle ; les goûts et les habitudes alimentaires. Ces thèmes seront analysés à travers une approche pluridisciplinaire et comparatiste qui dépasse les frontières entre chronologie, disciplines et cultures différentes. L’objectif de l’École thématique est de croiser les approches disciplinaires, les terrains de recherches, les périodes et les corpus de sources afin de proposer aux jeunes participants une ouverture méthodologique et scientifique autour d’une thématique commune d’étude, et d’en explorer toute la richesse.

The places of funerary rituals
Multifunctionality and the interrelationship between funerary and domestic spaces in the Neolithic and Bronze ages in the Near East and Mediterranean
Les rituels funéraires, même réduits à leurs traces archéologiques ou à des mentions littéraires dans les textes anciens, apparaissent comme des suites de gestes complexes. Pris au sens large, ils englobent des activités distinctes de la seule déposition du corps, par exemple la construction des tombes, la préparation des défunts et l’exposition des corps, les manipulations d’ossements post-sépulcrales, la fabrication du mobilier funéraire, l’organisation de cérémonies impliquant la consommation collective de boisson et de nourriture et éventuellement des jeux funèbres, les rassemblements commémoratifs. Or ces activités nécessitent le recours à des lieux différents de la tombe et de la nécropole et à des objets autres que le seul mobilier funéraire, tels que vaisselle, outils, dispositifs de stockage, instruments de soins corporels… Des espaces domestiques, publics ou privés, intérieurs ou extérieurs, peuvent donc revêtir sporadiquement ou durablement des fonctions funéraires.

Burial mounds and funerary customs in the Caucasus, Northwestern Iran and Eastern Anatolia during the Bronze and Iron Age
The tradition of burying the dead in burial mounds (kurgans), usually consisting of a funerary chamber limited by stone or brickslabs and covered by dirt and gravel, started in the fourth millennium BCE in the northern Caucasus and then spread south to the rest of the Caucasus regions, eastern Anatolia and northwestern Iran during the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The spread of the kurgan tradition, as well as the territorial, political, social, and cultural values embedded in their construction and their symbolic relation to the surrounding landscape are under debate. The workshop aims to examine chronological issues, cultural dynamics at inter-regional scale, rituals and burial patterns related to these funerary structures. The beliefs and ideologies that possibly connected the "kurgan people" over such a wide geographical area, as well as past and present theoretical frameworks, will also be discussed.

Borders, margins and cultural spaces
Archéorient Reseach laboratory, looking the current state of research methods and fieldwork in the ancient Near-East
L’enjeu est de réfléchir sur les notions de frontières et de marges, sur leurs manifestations matérielles ou idéelles, sur leur perméabilité (frontières imperméables ou espaces poreux) et sur leurs fluctuations dans le temps et dans l’espace. Une attention sera également portée aux éventuels recoupements entre ces limites et la définition des aires culturelles. Au delà, l’idée est également de revenir sur la perception que les sociétés anciennes pouvaient avoir de l’espace et de la territorialité. Le séminaire comprend onze interventions couvrant une fourchette chronologique large, allant du Néolithique à l’Antiquité. L'aire géographique concernée est celle des terrain d'Archéorient : la Méditerranée orientale et le Proche- et Moyen-Orient.

La thématique des séminaires est l’émergence de l’identité humaine. Elle suit l’actualité des découvertes dans l’esprit naturaliste du Muséum national d’histoire naturelle, inséparable des longues durées qui se déclinent en évolution de l’organisation interne des espèces, adaptations, migrations, endémismes, extinctions. En 2015, la préhistoire a connu de grandes avancées en Afrique (Éthiopie, Kenya) mais aussi en Asie (Inde, Chine) constatant des activités de type anthropique à la transition plio-pléistocène. Les questions émergentes font appel à une interdisciplinarité toujours plus élargie, avec comme fil directeur, la recherche des processus évolutifs en contexte écologique.

From the Caucasus to the Arabian Peninsula: studying domestic spaces in the Neolithic
Under neolithisation scholars understand multiple processes of social and economic transformation which begin at different times and follow regional trends in the Near and Middle East. It is within the complex relational and spatial framework of the household that these shifts in the structure and activities of Neolithic communities are easiest to apprehend and study. The conference will therefore focus on the domestic sphere in order to highlight and understand the polymorphous nature of what we call neolithisation. Various thematic sessions will be held to shed new light on current data: “Impacts of the shift to a sedentary/semi-sedentary lifestyle”; “Organising the house and the household”; “Private space/public space”; “Acquisition, production, transformation and use”; “Eating-Moving”; “Symbolic manifestations”;“The living and the dead”.

Au cours de ce séminaire, quatorze spécialistes (paléo-anthropologues, généticiens, paléontologues, préhistoriens, géo-chronologues) croiseront leurs données pour reconstituer deux millions d'années de peuplements humains en Asie continentale, de la Turquie à la Corée du Sud en passant par la Chine, l'Inde et les pays de la péninsule indochinoise. L'abondance des découvertes et l'intensité des études dans cette partie du monde, ainsi que les progrès méthodologiques récents, ont en effet considérablement renouvelé ce champ de recherche. -

Colonies, colonialisme et impérialisme dans les mondes anciens
À partir de l'exemple fourni par les études réalisées dans le cadre de la mission archéologique en Syrie de Tell Masaïkh, identifié comme le site de la cité néo-assyrienne de Kar-Assurnasirpal fondée par le roi Assurnasirpal II vers le milieu du IXe siècle av. J.-C., cette table-ronde traitera, dans une perspective comparatiste, des concepts de « colonie », de « métropole » et de construction impériale dans les mondes anciens.
