Thinking High and Low: Elites, Experts, and the Masses in the Early Reformation
The summer school highlights the dynamic interplay between “high” and “low” forms of thinking and between elite norm-setting and the appropriation, adaptation or contestation of those norms in real-life situations and historical events. By integrating inputs from theology, philosophy and history, along with intellectual, linguistic and social perspectives, the programme presents the transition from the late Middles Ages to the Reformation as a complex reordering of normative structures and cultural hierarchies. It invites the participants to reconsider the period through the lens of how ideas moved between, and were transformed across, different levels of thought, language and society.

Rethinking Innocent IV and the Crusades: A Multidisciplinary Inquiry
“Rethinking Innocent IV and the Crusades” seeks to reassess the pontificate of Innocent IV (1243–1254) through a sustained examination of his engagement with the crusading movement. We are pleased to invite proposals for 20-minute papers exploring all aspects of the relationship between the pontificate of Innocent IV and the crusading movement. We particularly welcome contributions that adopt interdisciplinary approaches, including (but not limited to) history, legal history, theology, manuscript studies, political thought and institutional history. Particular attention will be moreover giving the proposals concerning the history of heresy and heretical communities during Innocent’s pontificate, the relationship with the Mendicant Orders, with the Mongol World, the promotion and the business of the cross in Italy.

From 11-12 May 2026, the University of Liege will host the eighth edition of the International Doctoral Days of the Transitions Research Unit. Organized in partnership with the Centre d’Études supérieures de la Civilisation médiévale (Université de Poitiers), this conference will focus on the theme of absence. The chronological boundaries for this call correspond to those explored by Transitions (the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period).

Élites, violences et imaginaires médiévaux. Autour de l’œuvre de Martin Aurell
Ce colloque entend rendre hommage à l’œuvre foisonnante de Martin Aurell en explorant les thèmes qu'il a largement développé au cours de ses travaux de chercheur : les lignages aristocratiques, les pratiques du pouvoir, la guerre et ses récits, ainsi que les imaginaires chevaleresques. Il interroge les dynamiques sociales, culturelles et symboliques qui ont façonné les élites médiévales. À travers cinq sessions mêlant histoire politique, anthropologie du Moyen Âge et étude des représentations, cette manifestation met en lumière l’empreinte durable laissée par un historien majeur de sa génération.

Sanguis Christi. Culture visuelle/culture visionnaire (XIIIe-XVIIIe siècles)
Ce colloque propose d’explorer comment la dévotion au Saint-Sang, sous ses multiples formes et manifestations (reliques, sacrement, miracles), a façonné et nourri l’émergence d’une culture visuelle en Europe depuis le Moyen Âge jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle. Par culture visuelle / visionnaire, ce colloque entend ainsi donner une place à une approche qui sache interroger ce qui se donne à voir du Sang du Christ, en explorant l’articulation voire la tension qui émerge entre ce que le miracle rend perceptible aux sens et ce qui, par essence, échappe à la perception, ouvrant ainsi le fidèle à une dimension spirituelle et sacrée et à de nouvelles modalités de mise en visibilité du divin.

Humanités numériques et architecture religieuse médiévale
Cette manifestation scientifique a pour objectif de mettre en lumière l’apport des outils issus des humanités numériques pour l’étude des édifices religieux élevés durant la période médiévale. Des chercheurs provenant de l’ensemble du champ des études médiévales présenteront leurs projets, leurs méthodes, mais aussi les défis engendrés par l’utilisation de technologies émergentes.

Autour du XIVe siècle, l’optimum climatique médiéval laisse la place au petit âge glaciaire européen. Les inondations et autres phénomènes climatiques se multiplient. En parallèle, le regard porté sur ces inondations semble engendrer de nouvelles représentations mentales et figurées de l’épisode biblique du Déluge, désormais perçu comme un désastre. Dans quelle mesure l’observation répétée de phénomènes météorologiques diluviens a-t-elle pu modifier la perception par l’homme de son environnement et impacter sa lecture du récit biblique du Déluge ? Ces deux journées ambitionnent de faire dialoguer l’histoire du climat et de l’environnement avec l’histoire des images.

La Société d'histoire religieuse de la France organise son congrès à Lyon sur le sujet « Pauvreté et propriété » entre le 23 et le 28 novembre 2026. L'objet de la rencontre est d'étudier comment les religions ont concilié exigence de détachement et nécessité de l'assistance en inventant des formes renouvelées de propriété. Des communications sur des expériences originales de pauvreté et de lutte contre la pauvreté, sur l'art pauvre, sur les différentes formes de propriété partagée seront les bienvenues. Toutes les religions et toutes les périodes historiques sont concernées.

Late Medieval Cardinals Between Crises
From the Western Schism to the V Lateran Council (1378-1517)
The history of the cardinalate, which stretches from the 11th century to the present day, went through one of the most volatile phases of its development between the beginning of the Western Schism (1378) and the close of the Fifth Lateran Council (1517). This congress aims to work and reflect on these cardinals, both as a group, gathered in the Sacred College, and in their individual dimensions, as lords, members of lineages, pastors, reformers, conciliarists, centres of courts, families and networks, diplomats and representatives of nations, patrons of the arts, among others. The cross-sectional interest of this congress stems from the desire to feed the historiographical renewal that has been taking place over the last two decades on the medieval cardinalate, seeking to bring together researchers who are dedicated to its study, regardless of the angle of approach they may take.

Aquinomix - Thomas Aquinas' economic thought: an interdisciplinary approach
To mark the eighth centenary of the birth of Thomas Aquinas, the Centre d'études du Saulchoir, a multi-disciplinary research centre run by the Dominicans of the Province of France, and the PHARE research centre at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, which specialises in the history of economic thought, in partnership with the Commissio Leonina, in charge of the critical edition of the works of Thomas Aquinas, and the Société thomiste, intend to offer this conference as an opportunity for an interdisciplinary encounter centred on the economic thought of Aquinas. Honouring an interdisciplinary approach to the economic thought of Thomas Aquinas, the conference will address the historical dimension of the texts and their context, the philosophical and theological dimension, the dimension specific to economic analysis and the practical dimension.

De la genèse des objets aux stratégies muséographiques
Au fil du temps, et dans le contexte de l’autel, de nombreuses productions artistiques ont été privées de l’usage, du contexte et des significations envisagées lors de leur genèse. La matérialité de certaines de ces œuvres a pu être détériorée, altérée voire fusionnée avec d’autres supports pour revêtir de nouvelles valeurs sémantiques. Les questions de conservation et d’exposition dans des musées fondés à partir du XIXe siècle offrent une excellente occasion de réfléchir à la biographie de ces objets. En prenant en considération ces différents angles d’approche et des méthodes éprouvées dans le cadre de l’étude de la « longue vie » des objets, ce colloque a pour objectif d’attirer l’attention sur ce phénomène répandu, mais largement négligé par l’historiographie.

About John of Toledo, abbot of l'Épau, then cardinal
It has recently been proven that the famous Cardinal Jean de Tolède was indeed the first abbot of l'Épau, the abbey founded by Queen Berengaria of Navarre near Le Mans around 1230. This conference seekss to explore the various aspects of the career of this character and others like him, who passed through England, the Cistercian order, theological faculties and Toledo, before arriving at the Roman Curia, endowed with a solid medical culture, as well as alchemy and astrology.
