The French Revolution and the Sacred
Global and Contemporary Perspectives (18th c. – present)
In the years leading up to the bicentenary commemorations of 1989, a new liberal interpretation of the French Revolution challenged a long-lived socialist one. In contrast to the Marxist view of a “bourgeois revolution” with popular support, the liberal historiography has recurrently emphasized the role of “revolutionary ideology” and the “collective mentality” which led to the episode of the “Terror”. We might take the end of Cold War binary frameworks as an opportunity to move beyond this long-lasting interpretive divide, and to reinvestigate how the Revolution transformed ideas of the sacred and has itself been sacralized.

L’association Amis de Rochambeau marquera le tricentenaire de la naissance de Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau (le 1er juillet 1725) en organisant un colloque international dans sa ville natale, Vendôme. De nombreux historiens, chercheurs et universitaires se retrouveront ainsi pour composer un large portrait de Rochambeau à travers leurs spécialités respectives et pour participer au renouvellement de l'histoire de la guerre.

This special issue of Contemporanea aims to reflect on the mobility of political material culture, analysing how its circulation and transformation, both physical and symbolic in time and space, generated connections between contexts and movements, disseminated and popularised images and imagination, and redefined and influenced political sensibilities and practices during the long 19th century.

The Culture of Suspicion: Creating Suspects in the Age of Revolutions
The workshop will examine the impact of suspicion in the age of the Atlantic Revolutions (from around 1770 to 1830) in Europe and its colonial territories. We invite contributions that focus on the question of how individuals or groups of people became suspects of hostility towards the existing monarchical or revolutionary order, and thus potentially subversive. Contributions may deal with the narrative construction of suspicion as well as the practical surveillance measures and juridical proceedings that were used against the suspects.

La place de l’histoire du droit et des institutions dans les pensées libertaires
Les penseurs libertaires et anarchistes dans leurs réflexions politiques ont eu à cœur d’évoquer le droit et d’appréhender son histoire. Mais, face à une conception du droit fondée sur une acceptation, plus ou moins consciente, de la notion d’État, sanctionnant le droit via une violence légitime dont il a le monopole, ils ont recherché dans les marges, temporelles et spatiales, les formes de droits non étatiques, ce « ius » qui n’était pas lex. À cette occasion, ils se sont tournés vers l’histoire, et particulièrement l’histoire du droit et des institutions, et les autres sciences de l’homme, anthropologie et ethnologie, appliquées aux concepts juridiques. C’est la place de ce regard, vers le passé ou vers les marges contemporaines, et sa méthode au sein des pensées libertaires que nous souhaitons interroger.

Too often confined in the perimeter of military studies, the concept of débâcle discloses a plurality of dramatic, iridescent, vivid meanings. Facing a defeat means participating in a collective trauma, questioning established certainties, redeeming national identity in the face of a moral and political challenge. Rather than reconstructing the episodes of defeat and rebirth in French history, the eighth call for papers of Suite française invites to reflect on the perception of such episodes and their disruptive psychological and political impact. How were débâcle and similar categories such as décadence, trauma, failure, and renascence used by thinkers witnessing the Terror, Sedan, Vichy, and Dien Bien Phu?

Strangers and foreigners: hospitality and hostility in Britain, France, and Germany, 1680-1850
The ongoing wars and migrations have foregrounded the issue of the hosting of migrants and the duty of hospitality. This international Early career symposium aims to explore the relationship to foreigners in Germanophone areas, France and Britain (including colonial spaces) from the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), which provoked international migrations of Protestant refugees, to the revolutions of 1848, which were characterized both by internationalist fervour and by political exiles.

Montreurs d’animaux, tours de physique et de mécanique, lanternes magiques, ventriloques, jongleurs et équilibristes sur pied ou à cheval, aérostats, marionnettes et cires sont, aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, l’âme de petits métiers ambulants qui animent les places publiques, les rues, les auberges, les cabarets, les loges des foires, les cirques naissants, voire les maisons particulières.

Croisements, métissages, trajectoires : vivre la Révolution des colonies (1774-1804)
L’histoire récente des espaces coloniaux et de leur intégration à la dynamique révolutionnaire a reçu une attention méritée et soutenue ces dernières années. Il n’est désormais plus possible d’écrire l’histoire des Révolutions de la fin du XVIIIe siècle sans intégrer l’héritage colonial de l’Ancien Régime et sans comprendre les événements propres à ces espaces qui influencent plus que les métropoles, les grands équilibres géopolitiques de la planète encore prise dans le duel franco‑britannique pour l’hégémonie mondiale dans un jeu d’alliances des plus complexes. Le colloque proposé tente une autre approche.

Être ou ne pas être républicain : une notion à l’épreuve des itinéraires individuels et collectifs
Malgré son saisissement par la Révolution française, la notion de républicanisme est demeurée mouvante. Pour comprendre toute la complexité de cette notion entre la fin du XVIIIe siècle et la première moitié du XXe siècle, il est essentiel d’étudier le sentiment républicain à travers les itinéraires individuels ou collectifs, entre attachement ostensible ou refus manifeste. Être ou devenir républicain implique une volonté personnelle liée à des mutations aussi bien institutionnelles qu’intimes. Les manifestations d’opposition sont aussi suscitées par des convictions souvent profondes. L’objectif de deux journées d’étude complémentaires, à Rouen et à Lille, est d’identifier les signes de l’adhésion ou non à la République, mais également d’analyser les stratégies mises en œuvre pour diffuser ou endiguer le républicanisme. Ces ressorts peuvent reposer, d’une part, sur le mouvement populaire, les activistes politiques et l’éducation, et d’autre part, sur la législation et la coercition.

Concepts of Exile, Refuge, and Asylum, c. 1750–1850
The Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, signed at Geneva on 28 July 1951, defined who is eligible for and what constitutes asylum for refugees under international law. Its universal expansion in 1967 remains the cornerstone for today’s global refugee regime, which has shaped the legal definition of the refugee and rights to asylum for over fifty years. Well before the second half of the twentieth century, however, the term refugee and related concepts were used, debated, shaped and mobilized by a variety of historical actors and state authorities in different regions of the world. And despite being inscribed in international law, refugee status and asylum remain contested and politicized, and continue to apply unevenly to people fleeing violence and oppression. This workshop seeks to build upon the emerging field of refugee history by focusing on the transition and overlap between early modern and modern periods.

Before Suffrage : Women, Politics and society in Europe (1789-1850)
The workshop will examine a series of issues about the forms of activity in which women engaged that they themselves could see as having political dimensions or that sought to influence the direction taken by the communities and society of which they were a part. Our interest is in exploring the range of parts that women in Europe played in the growing contestation and confrontation that developed in this period and that was increasingly coupled with political demands for reform or for recognition of various forms.

Ce colloque est situé au carrefour de deux chantiers historiographiques profondément renouvelés au cours des dernières années : l’histoire des révolutions et l’histoire des polices. Il ambitionne d’explorer, à l’échelle européenne, et de manière comparatiste, cette multiplicité de relations entre polices et crises révolutionnaires, entre polices et mouvements révolutionnaires, qu’ils soient massifs ou plus confidentiels, avec des modes d’intervention politique et des systèmes de représentations variés.
