  Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik

  The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

  Tracing the city: city symphonies in reverse and the cinematic apparatus

  « La Furia Umana », numéro 40/2021

  What are city symphonies reflecting in their contemporary cinematic versions?  How are filmic dispositifscapturing and documenting the city as an entity which is both subjective and intersubjective? As Richard Koeck suggests, in his essay Cine-spaces : Cinematic spaces in architecture and cities (2012), it is perhaps from the vantage point of the of the simulacrum that we must understand cinema's inscription within the post-modern city. Indeed, what if we began to think about the city as a visual system based on movements, lights and bodies – one we could explore in a cinematic, cinetic or kinesthesit way? By using film as a lens through which to see urban spaces and places, it would be less a question of showing the placement of architecture, but of seeing how much post-modern architecture, for instance, is a cinematic phenomenon, an urban décor in motion (Las Vegas, Dubai, Macao…).

  Twenty years after the 9/11 attacks, the Universities of Toulouse (CAS) and Montpellier (EMMA) in the South of France are joining forces to organize an international interdisciplinary conference on these events. Its aim is to analyze, not only the events and their short-term consequences with a two-decade hindsight, but also the many ways in which those events have been perceived, represented, commented upon, co-opted or rewritten along the years. It also invites reflections upon the way in which some of these responses, representations or co-optations have been in their turn received, commented upon and used in this 20-year period.

  New perspectives on Charleville: History, population and territory (17th-19th century)

  Le 2 avril 2005, lors du colloque du cinquantenaire de la Société d’études ardennaises, François-Joseph Ruggiu proposait une communication intitulée Pour une histoire de Charleville et de sa population sous l’Ancien Régime. Il venait d’ouvrir un champ d’études et de sources inédites dont personne ne soupçonnait alors l’importance et les multiples dimensions historiques qui allaient en découler. En décembre 2010, un premier colloque intitulé Charleville, une ville neuve et sa population s’est tenu pour mettre en lumière l’histoire de la population de Charleville et ces sources exceptionnelles, en France et en Europe, que sont les dénombrements annuels de population de la ville. Les 28 et 29 mai 2021, un second rendez-vous scientifique international aura pour but de proposer un nouveau point d’étape sur ce projet et de mettre en lumière les travaux innovants qui se focalisent actuellement sur l’histoire de la cité ardennaise, dans une perspective de longue durée et à travers de multiples domaines de recherche.

  LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism

  In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists. The « LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism » online conference is jointly organised by the Université de Lorraine and its research centres (2L2S and CREM), with the support of the French ministry of culture (DRAC Grand-Est), and the LGBTIQ centre Couleurs Gaies.

  La Fondation de la mémoire contemporaine lance un appel à contributions pour son prochain numéro des Cahiers de la Mémoire contemporaine. La revue a pour mission de rassembler des analyses historiques, culturelles ou sociologiques sur l'histoire des Juifs en Belgique. Parmi les sujets traités dans ses pages : les différents mouvements migratoires vers ou de la Belgique, les structures d’aide sociale, les processus de socialisation, la Résistance juive, les enfants cachés, la vie religieuse, les relations avec Israël, la reconstruction de la vie juive après-guerre... Les Cahiers sont également ouverts à des présentations de sources, des recensions d'ouvrages, des réflexions méthodologiques ainsi que des éclairages biographiques. Des études sur des sujets adjacents peuvent également être acceptées.

  À l’occasion de la présente journée d’études, nous nous proposons de réfléchir à la manière dont l’imaginaire urbain renvoie à des territorialités qui sont simultanément habitées par les écrivains et artistes, l’occupant, les autochtones et ceux qui sont désormais considérés dans leur condition d’exclus, d’étrangers ou de « clandestins ». Nous invitons les contributeurs à s’interroger sur la part de la dimension spatiale dans les écrits (fiction, poésie, écrits intimes, théâtre, etc.) ou les réalisations picturales, musicales des écrivains, artistes et musiciens qui ont réagi face aux mesures introduites à l’encontre des Juifs.

  This symposium aims to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds to collectively reflect on rewriting the history of abstraction by re-evaluating women artists’ contributions to the various abstract art movements. Firstly, it will make it possible to question the history of art conceived as a succession of pioneering practices. By examining the meaning of the term “abstraction” according to the various periods, geographies and media employed, the symposium will seek to demonstrate its complexity. Finally, it will be an opportunity to study the circulation of abstract practices in the world in order to open the debate on the canons established by Western modernity.

  Influence practices in XXth and XXIst Centuries

  The field of influence activities is increasingly proliferating (advertising, propaganda, marketing, public relations, communication, soft power, social psychology, fake news, applied algorithmic, etc.). It is important to grasp not only their scope, but their extension, their dynamics, their practices, their logic, their techniques. Where and on whom do they work? What are their histories? Who are their practitioners? What are their pioneer fronts? Why is it important to consider them just as much each in their specificity, and together? What is the contribution of influence practices to the production of value (economic and political)? From the point of view of the present and from the one of long duration history, is not influence government (a form of governmentality) a major dimension of the deep neoliberal turn the world is experiencing nowadays?

  Science and madness, extravagance, exception

  Alchemists, magicians, outlaw scientists in italian culture

  This volume aims at exploring the ways of science as excess and madness (see Zangrandi 2011, 2017; Garlaschelli and Carrer 2017) or, in less tragic forms, as an opportunity to explore new paths of knowledge. Another goal is to shed light on the character’s evolution, tracing the roots of a literary and cultural trope that, since the 20^th century, takes on multiple configurations and plays manifold functions. Looking back to the past, this theme can be traced in the Romanticism’s rejection of the exact science and in the particular declination proposed by Leopardi in his Operette morali, or even in the disquieting image of the alchemist of the Renaissance, whose superior knowledge of natural phenomena turns into the extreme and a punishable hybris.

  Le mot institution désigne, selon l’une des définitions les plus courantes, un « organisme public ou privé, régime légal ou social, établi pour répondre à quelque besoin déterminé d'une société donnée ». Cette définition suscite des images stéréotypées : bâtiments officiels, bureaux, fonctionnaires, textes réglementaires… Elles s’étendent aux institutions artistiques, couramment associées à des lieux emblématiques – musées, théâtres, académies… –, ainsi qu’à des instances de subvention, de transmission ou de patrimonialisation de l’art. L’institution est parfois vue comme un pur instrument de contrainte normative, lieu de « récupération » voire de répression, opposée caricaturalement à la liberté, à la spontanéité ou à la subversion de l’art. La doxa ajoute parfois que les artistes se battent contre elles avant de les intégrer : signe d’une reconnaissance bien méritée ou de la pire des compromissions. Le but de ce numéro est d’explorer les relations entre la création artistique et les institutions.

  The circulation, distribution, and reproduction of images and texts in periodicals at the turn of the century (1870-1930)

  La fin du XIX^e siècle peut être considérée comme l’achèvement d’un ensemble de processus de systématisation et de rationalisation des techniques de production et de diffusion de l’imprimé : au niveau technique, la mise au point des procédés de reproduction photomécanique rendant possible la reproduction à faible coût et sans perte d’information des images et des textes ; au niveau rhétorique, le journalisme valorise des formes simples, directes, qui augmentent l’efficacité communicationnelle. La question que souhaite soulever ce colloque est celle de la pertinence de l’application de la notion de viralité à la culture (et plus particulièrement la culture de la presse) au tournant des XIX^e et XX^e siècles.

Le XIX^e siècle face à l'accélération du temps et de l'histoire. L’appel à communications est ouvert à des propositions relevant de la littérature française, de la littérature comparée, de l’histoire, de la philosophie, de l’histoire des arts et de la musicologie. Dans un souci d’analyse globale des phénomènes, on privilégiera des approches transversales, plutôt que des études monographiques.

  La Fédération historique de Provence tiendra son prochain congrès bisannuel à Barcelonnette les 2, 3 et 4 octobre 2020. Il aura pour thème « Gouverner la ville » et concernera tant la Provence que l’Italie nord-occidentale, depuis l’Antiquité tardive jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine, aussi bien dans ses aspects matériels, institutionnels, juridiques qu’idéologiques, culturels, sociaux, économiques et politiques et artistiques.   The international network Humanities for Change, in accordance with the interdisciplinary spirit and the contaminatory approach that characterize its activities, intends to organize a day of study on the theme of public humanities. The meeting aims to stimulate some reflections coming from different fields of knowledge and to encourage the dialogue between researchers on the possibilities of the humanities to escape from academic circles. In this sense, the main object of study is the analysis of methodologies and tools related to knowledge dissemination practices for historical, artistic and philological-literary disciplines. Particular attention will also be given to new professional figures connected to the degree courses of the humanities faculties (such as the 'public historian') and to the interactions of these professional figures with the new media of communication and mass dissemination.

  This symposium is organised in conjunction with the research programme “Court identities and the myth of Versailles in Europe: perception, adherence and rejection (18th-19th centuries)” led by the Centre de recherche du château de Versailles. The aim is to analyse the modus operandi of the myth of Versailles in the monarchic Europe of the 18^th, 19^th and 20^th centuries, taking into account the two contradictory yet complementary elements that characterise the idea of myth: the real and the reconstruction of the real. The focus of this conference will therefore be twofold: understanding how the different aspects specific to the identity of Versailles have fuelled an illusion, but also discerning how this illusion gave rise to other accomplishments, whether architectural, ritual or political.

  International PhD Contract 2020-2023

  Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20^th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.
