The Many Uses of DNA. Politics and Policies of Genetics
The aim of this workshop is to bring together social scientists interested in different aspects of genetics and genomics, to discuss recent developments in the field. In addition to scientific and technological developments in DNA sequencing and the datafication of genetic information, we aim to foster collective discussions on, among other things, the expanding role of genomics in the legal system and the reframing of ancestrality in the age of “genetic testing”.

The Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art (CIHA) and the Comité International des Sciences Historiques (CISH) during the Cold War
The Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art (CIHA) and the Comité International des Sciences Historiques (CISH) played a crucial role in the advancement of scholarship in the fields of Art History and History during the Cold War. We invite submissions of 20-minute papers exploring the history of these international organisations and their role in fostering transnational networks, cultural exchanges, and theoretical and methodological debates between scholars. We are also interested in local structures and the impact of international meetings on the development of national historiographies. We especially encourage papers focused on the Eastern Bloc and the Global South.

Archéologie des carrières en Hauts-de-France et dans les régions limitrophes
Les enjeux urbanistiques des Trente Glorieuses ont contribué à la création de services d'inspections des carrières au sien des collectivités territoriales françaises. Afin de mieux comprendre leur territoire, les géologues se sont alors progressivement rapprochés des historiens et des archéologues. Les projets récents, tels que l’Atlas numérique sur l’archéologie des carrières, illustre l’ouverture des collaborations en mettant en lien des acteurs du monde scientifique avec ceux de l’industrie. Face à ce constat, le Service archéologique municipal d’Arras et le Centre archéologique de Seclin, qui étudient les carrières souterraines depuis plusieurs années, souhaitent proposer une journée d’études autour de la thématique des carrières. L’objectif est de rassembler les différents acteurs des Hauts-de-France, mais aussi ceux des régions limitrophes, dans un souci de comparaison, afin de faire le point sur l’état de la recherche.

Reassessing Neo-Byzantine Style from Paris to Algiers to Tiflis – and Beyond (ca. 1800 – 1920)
In the wake of blossoming discussions on the reception history of the Middle Ages, this conference attempts to rethink the protean and eclectic term “Neo-Byzantine” from a broad perspective. We are particularly interested in the complex articulation between art historical theory, architectural and artistic practice, and the actual patronages and uses of the “Neo-Byzantine.” We invite scholars dealing with the issue from a broad chronological (1800–1920) and geographical frame, bridging Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. We especially welcome are case studies or broader reflections on the uses of “Neo-Byzantine” architecture in processes of identity and nation-building and within frameworks of orientalism and colonialism.

“Transposition. Music and social sciences” n°13 (2025)
The issue 13 of Transposition aims to provide an overview of the relationships between music and right-wing political movements in the contemporary world. If music is both an aesthetic and a social phenomenon that can contribute to our understanding of the world, is there a specifically musical way of thinking about and defining the political category of the right? With a view to questioning the contribution of music to the evolution of right-wing ways of thinking and acting, and vice versa, proposals may focus as much on actors as on institutions, as well as on the aesthetic scope of artistic productions.

Les différentes communications interrogent l’évolution des organisations, des pratiques et des trajectoires militantes dans le mouvement féministe contemporain. Elles s’intéressent également à la diffusion des idées et des pratiques féministes au sein de différents espaces.

For a world history of the circus from Antiquity to the present day
The aim of this conference is to decompartmentalise these historiographies by inviting researchers in history and, more broadly, in the arts and the social sciences (performing arts, art history, sociology, anthropology, etc.), as well as those involved in the artistic and cultural world, to combine their approaches. This conference sees itself as a first step towards a world history of the circus, while being aware of the limits of such an undertaking. The historiography of the circus is recent, and many aspects remain unexplored. There is a lack of works that build bridges between different national histories. Moreover, some of them have not yet been written. The history of the circus in certain regions of the world and at certain periods remains largely unknown. Consequently, papers taking a local approach may be proposed if they draw attention to these areas where the history of the circus has yet to be written. However, the emphasis will be on comparative or connected, global or even worldwide approaches. The aim will be to highlight intercultural dynamics rather than local particularities.

Global and historical perspectives
How do land reforms affect land access and property rights? Who are the actors of these transformations? Does such evolution contribute to the commodification and financialization of land? How do urban regulations produce informalities and affect socio-spatial dynamics? This half-day thematic seminar seeks to delve into these key questions with two roundtables. Aiming to inform today’s urban transformations through law and history, the six presentations will cover different contexts as diverse as Istanbul, Northern Italy, rural China, Madrid, and colonial Bombay, spanning from the 14th century to today.

Une nouvelle pensée de l’universel : colloque consacré à Souleymane Bachir Diagne
Philosophie, religion, politique et traduction
Il est temps aujourd’hui de mesurer l’importance de la pensée de Souleymane Bachir Diagne dans son unité, sa question principale et essentielle aujourd’hui, mais aussi son parcours et sa diversité. Professeur à Columbia mais aussi à l’ENS après l’avoir été à Dakar, au Collège de France, à Northwestern, et dans le monde entier, il propose une nouvelle pensée de l’universel, « latéral », « ouvert », qui renouvelle l’universalisme. Il a traversé et traverse encore tous les domaines : la philosophie générale et son histoire, la philosophie de la religion, la philosophie politique et culmine dans sa pensée de la traduction. C’est une pensée en dialogue, avec laquelle il faut dialoguer aujourd’hui. Tel est le but de ce premier grand colloque international à lui être consacré, à l’Ecole normale supérieure-PSL.

Le colloque « Religions et laïcités » - Les colloques de Lumi se déroulera les 8 et 9 octobre 2024 à Corte. La question de la laïcité est dans de nombreux pays d’une actualité incandescente, le phénomène étant notamment lié aux effets de la globalisation, des migrations et du « retour du religieux » après l’effondrement des grandes idéologies. Ainsi, la mise en scène de son appartenance religieuse - avec ou sans foi - apparaît de nos jours comme une condition tacite de la participation sociale du citoyen à la collectivité, de l’exercice de la citoyenneté, à rebours des principes des Lumières, de la liberté individuelle et du savoir qui seuls sauraient garantir l’émancipation individuelle.

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (Kolleg-Forschungsgruppe, KFG) ‘Universalism and Particularism in European Contemporary History’ at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) is seeking to appoint three Junior Fellowships (Postdocs) for the summer term 2025 (April-September). The KFG ‘Universalism and Particularism’ investigates universalist and particularist models of order in European contemporary history from the 1970s to the present. The KFG research program focuses on economic, religious/secular and human rights regimes.

Comment les conflits se terminent-ils ?
Nous savons comment les conflits commencent et se développent. L’agression et les représailles créent une spirale sans fin dans laquelle chaque partie souffre de plus en plus. Ceux qui mènent les guerres exploitent l’impulsion humaine du « nous contre eux », transformant le chagrin, la peur et la frustration en haine et exacerbant les conflits. Pourtant, les conflits peuvent avoir une fin. Comment se terminent-ils ? Et comment les sociétés survivent-elles à leurs conséquences? Quelle contribution les sciences sociales peuvent-elles apporter à l’examen des conditions de résolution des conflits ? Cette année, le cycle « Agir en temps de crise » a choisi de s’intéresser à cette question de la fin des conflits, et voudrait examiner ce que l’histoire nous a appris, des traités de paix aux initiatives de réconciliation.

Du XIXe siècle à nos jours
Ce colloque interdisciplinaire, à la croisée de l’histoire, de la philosophie, de la sociologie et du droit, se propose de remettre la focale sur cette dimension politique et critique portée par des coopératives de production en choisissant comme porte d’entrée la question juridique. Ouvert aux contributions portant sur la France et sur l’international, il prend pour objet ce que nous appelons ici, pour des questions de praticité, des « coopératives de travailleuses et travailleurs ». Nous entendons par là les coopératives possédées et gérées (au moins en grande partie) par les travailleur·se·s eux-mêmes – qu’elles prennent la forme des associations ouvrières, des coopératives de production (Scop), des Sociétés coopératives d’intérêt collectif (Scic), des Coopératives d’activité et d’emploi (CAE), des Sociétés anonymes de participation ouvrière (SAPO) – et portant un projet économique et politique alternatif aux entreprises capitalistes.

Local communities in Austria-Hungary and beyond
“Acta Poloniae Historica”
Changes in the management of the Habsburg Empire and new technologies, expanding the circulation of social communication, accelerated the modernisation processes taking place in Central Europe. It was an area inhabited by various ethnic, national, religious and linguistic communities; they had to rework their modus vivendi and to find their place in complex networks of relations, in the context of the liberalising legal framework of the 1860s in the Austrian part of the monarchy and the tightening grip of the state on the local non-Magyar initiatives in the Hungarian part. Deep and multi-faceted socio-cultural changes were leading to new cumulations of symbolic (and political) power; new groups, termed here as local communities (political, social, religious), were gaining visibility and sought recognition, according to changing configuration of values and integration impulses. We pose the question how the new or redefined communities were formed and managed.

Trente après le génocide des Tutsi au Rwanda, cette journée d’étude interdisciplinaire du mardi 28 mai 2024 vise à interroger les nouvelles approches et enjeux de la recherche en sciences sociales, trois décennies après l’événement. Dédiée aux travaux de jeunes chercheur-e-s et ouvertes à des approches comparatives, elle donnera lieu à quatre tables rondes pour aborder les problématiques liées à l’enquête de terrain, à la justice et ses archives, à la santé mentale et à la société post-génocide.

Séminaire d’anthropologie diachronique
Le thème « Des tubercules au riz, de l’orge au blé... Transitions culturales et alimentaires », est abordé dans une double approche ethnologique/anthropologique et archéologique et dans une dimension diachronique et comparative, c’est-à-dire à la fois spatiale et temporelle. À partir d’exemples ethnographiques, historiques et archéologiques, on tentera de cerner contextes et raisons du changement cultural survenu dans des aires culturelles et/ou historiques marquées jadis par la chasse-collecte ou l’horticulture délaissées au profit de l’agriculture et de l’élevage et surtout, dans des régions et sociétés longtemps caractérisées par la mise en culture et la consommation d’un tubercule ou d’une céréale particulière dominante, les raisons de l’abandon de celui-ci ou de celle-ci au profit d’une plante importée.

With the growing realisation that nature and the earth’s climate are at risk of being destroyed, this conference aims to centralise the interconnectedness between nature and human beings, by analysing the depiction of their relationship in Western-European art, including the effects of colonialism, during the long nineteenth century.
