Fondazione 1563 is pleased to launch the sixth call for applications of the Turin Humanities Programme (THP) to award up to 4 two year fellowships for advanced studies on After the Enlightenment: Histories, Debates, and Reinterpretations. Candidates are invited to propose projects examining how the concept of the Enlightenment has been constructed, adapted, contested and (re)appropriated in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries—that is, after the historical period conventionally associated with it.

From the Renaissance up to the thresholds of the 20th century, the human body was never a simple biological object, but a genuine “incarnate secret” and a conceptual nexus at the crossroads of scientific knowledge and occult lore. The body has often been perceived as the greatest of Nature’s secrets. For centuries, the inquiry into the body represented a battlefield and a point of collaboration between disciplines. Entre culture populaire et érudition
Depuis la mort de Michel Ragon (1924-2020), les initiatives se multiplient pour faire vivre la mémoire de cet historien de l’architecture et professeur à l’École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs. Son œuvre littéraire, elle, demeure moins étudiée et apparaît comme un objet d’étude encore peu légitimé – ou du moins marginal – au sein du champ académique. De récents colloques, dont les contributions ont respectivement paru dans les revues 303 et Fragments, témoignent cependant d’un intérêt non pas naissant, mais plus assuré, qu’il convient de consolider en embrassant l’ensemble de l’œuvre littéraire, au-delà de ces deux massifs remarquables que sont Les Mouchoirs rouges de Cholet (1984 ; cf. Robert, 1994) et La Mémoire des vaincus (1990).

Literature, Spiritualities and the Politics of Meaning in Liberal Italy, 1861–1915 (Romance Studies)
This special issue examines the intersections of literature, spirituality, and politics in Italian culture between 1861, the year of Italian unification, and 1915, a symbolic threshold that, for Italy, marked both the onset of the war and the collapse of its liberal order. This period witnessed a profound epistemological crisis, as traditional structures of knowledge and belief were increasingly destabilized by the pressures of modernization, secularization, and rapid ideological and social change.

Faire couple en littérature, de 1880 à nos jours
Sociohistoire, pratiques et représentations d’une institution littéraire
Alors que la conjugalité, l’amour et l’hétéronormativité ont fait l’objet d’importants travaux dans les études de genre et la sociologie dans les dernières décennies, la notion de couple a bien souvent été ignorée, voire déconsidérée dans la critique littéraire, où elle s’est vue volontiers associée à un registre anecdotique, voire à une certaine forme de voyeurisme. Ce colloque consacré aux couples dans le champ littéraire, de la fin du xixe siècle à aujourd’hui, vise à pallier ce manque, en mettant au centre des réflexions une unité d’analyse située entre l’individu et le groupe, deux échelles plus traditionnelles dans les études littéraires et en sociologie de la littérature.

La circulation des savoirs au prisme du mesmérisme (XVIIIe-XIXe siècles)
Ce workshop a pour objet l’histoire du magnétisme animal - ou mesmérisme - définit comme un système de théories cosmologiques et de pratiques thérapeutiques développé à la fin du XVIIIe siècle par le médecin allemand Franz Anton Mesmer. Ce thème est exploré depuis 2013 par le projet collaboratif « Harmonia Universalis », financé par le Labex Hastec, qui a abouti en 2022 à la conférence internationale Animal magnetism in motion. Reconfigurations and Circulations. 1776-1848. La publication des actes de ce colloque est aujourd'hui l’occasion de dresser un bilan des recherches effectuées et d’explorer des nouvelles perspectives.

For a workshop on cooperative ensembles (1770–1890), taking place on 12/13 September 2025 at the Université de Genève, we are calling for short presentations followed by open discussions covering topics such as governance, administration, financial management, inclusion/exclusion of members, their social position, rehearsal practices, artistic leadership, or stage plans. Participants are invited to present source material such as minutes of meetings, statutes, reports on cooperative decision-making processes, annotated sheet music, or images of ensembles, which will form the basis for discussions.

Symposium on Intellectual History and Legal History (INTELLEX)
The conference aims to gather scholars working on legal history or other aspects related to the teaching of legal disciplines in a historical context in order to contribute to an intellectual history of this discipline. Although the conference focuses on identifying the intellectual contexts in which legal history developed, social aspects are also considered, since ideas do not exist independently of people. The social aspects could be, for instance, teachers and students at universities, royal academies, or other institutions disseminating knowledge.

Generations and Generational Time in the United States During the Long Nineteenth Century
This conference will take place at Lille University, June 12-13, 2025, and will explore generations, generational thinking, and generational time in the United States during the long nineteenth century. In the wake of the Revolution the very idea of generations meant freedom from the parent country, and the possibility of taking turns to shape the nation. But generationality also implies a linear experience of time and logics of transmission which are not available to many oppressed groups, in the context of slavery in particular. Our goal is to provide an opportunity to investigate modes of relationality, kinship, or fellow-feeling throughout the nineteenth century while questioning and complicating the "generational model." We welcome contributions on the literature, the culture and the history of the United States in the long nineteenth century.

Des lieux à soi ? Projet de recherche-action autour de parcours touristiques littéraires au féminin
Projet émergent, la journée est conçue à la manière d’un atelier et de rencontres préparatoires à l’élaboration d’un parcours touristique interrégional portant sur des figures de femmes de lettres en Normandie et dans les Hauts-de-France. Elle propose de réfléchir sur les enjeux inhérents aux appropriations de ces figures dans et par les territoires où elles sont nées, ont vécu, ont séjourné, qu’elles ont décrits et où elles ont écrit. Marginalisées au sein de l’espace public, elles et leurs œuvres, ont longtemps été exclues de toute reconnaissance et valorisation en tant que patrimoine littéraire digne d’intérêt. Jusqu’il y a peu de temps encore, cantonnées ou renvoyées à leurs « chambres à elles », pour peu qu’elles aient pu jouir d’un espace à soi au sein de l’espace domestique comme l’analyse Virginia Woolf dans son essai de 1929, ces figures paraissent de nos jours en voie de réhabilitation pour gagner le devant de la scène dite « matrimoniale ».

Cette journée d’étude est réalisée en lien avec l’exposition « George Sand, féministe ? ». Elle questionne l’idée-reçue selon laquelle George Sand (1804-1876) est considérée comme une grande figure du féminisme. Femme indépendante, par son travail et par ses mœurs, elle brave les interdits dans un siècle bourgeois et misogyne, en portant le pantalon malgré l’interdiction ou en vivant séparée de son mari. L’exposition explore son engagement pour améliorer sa propre condition, celle de ses congénères, son rôle dans le débat sur le droit de vote des femmes et la confronte avec d’autres personnalités féminines de son époque, aux idées parfois plus progressistes.

Cette manifestation s’intitule « Écrivaines entre littérature et sciences (II) : Essayisme, auto/biographie et savoirs ». Il s’agit du deuxième volet du projet « Écrivaines entre littérature et sciences », dont le premier avait porté sur la négociation de savoirs dans les pratiques d’écriture féminines dans l’espace germanophone depuis la fin du XIXe siècle. Dans une approche que nous souhaitons comparatiste, nous envisageons, pour ce deuxième volet, d’étendre la réflexion aux domaines francophones, anglophones et hispanophones, notamment.

Local communities in Austria-Hungary and beyond
“Acta Poloniae Historica”
Changes in the management of the Habsburg Empire and new technologies, expanding the circulation of social communication, accelerated the modernisation processes taking place in Central Europe. It was an area inhabited by various ethnic, national, religious and linguistic communities; they had to rework their modus vivendi and to find their place in complex networks of relations, in the context of the liberalising legal framework of the 1860s in the Austrian part of the monarchy and the tightening grip of the state on the local non-Magyar initiatives in the Hungarian part. Deep and multi-faceted socio-cultural changes were leading to new cumulations of symbolic (and political) power; new groups, termed here as local communities (political, social, religious), were gaining visibility and sought recognition, according to changing configuration of values and integration impulses. We pose the question how the new or redefined communities were formed and managed.
