Femmes d’image, images de femmes
Pour une approche transversale de la place des femmes dans les cinémas d’Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique
Face à l’intérêt grandissant porté sur les figures féminines des cinématographies d’Europe de l’Est, orientale et balkanique dont les films font depuis plusieurs années l’objet, cette journée d’étude, qui se déroulera à l’université Paris Cité le 10 juin 2026, entend interroger la place des femmes et leur représentation à l’image dans ces cinématographies.

La Société française d'histoire politique (SFHPO) et le Centre de recherche Europes-Eurasie (CREE-Inalco) organisent une journée d’étude sur le thème des carcéralités politiques en Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique aux XXe et XXIe siècles. Elle vise à questionner le sens et la nature des carcéralités politiques selon les types de régimes ou les périodes ; le rôle de leurs acteurs, qu’il s’agisse en premier lieu des prisonniers politiques ou des administrations et des pouvoirs politiques à l’origine de ces mises en détention ; la place des lieux ou anciens lieux de captivité comme espace de politisation ou comme source d’identité politique et/ou de conflits mémoriels ; les productions politiques en milieu carcéral.

Memory, perception and politics of empire today
The study of empires is a dynamic field; we are constantly revising our knowledge of empires, inspired by newly discovered sources as well as new approaches. The context of historical writing itself significantly influences our perception of imperial history. Post-imperial realities also force us to rethink the empire. This special issue of Diacronie. Studi di storia contemporanea invites contributions that present perspectives on how we remember and study the empires that collapsed at the end of the First World War.

Wer ist Walter? Resistance against Nazism in Europe
The first conference in the framework of our “Wer ist Walter?”-project will include four panels on the history of resistance against Nazism and fascism during World War Two. Gathering historians, curators and other researchers from different countries, the main aims of the conference are to present and discuss new research on the history of resistance, with a specific focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France and Germany, in a comparative and European perspective, and to discuss about different understandings of resistance and about the relevance of its memory today.

Agency and action in Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish émigré communities during the Cold War
This special webinar celebrates the launch of the project’s public heritage exhibition atkadocheritage.be. This online exhibition contains a selection of contributions produced by the project’s partners, outlining a wealth of civil society mobilizations by Central and Eastern European migrants in the Low Countries during the period 1933-1989. The exhibition’s purpose is to emphasize the potential that forgotten stories like these can play in curating the heritage, commemorating, and documenting the histories of the unique circumstances that these Central European émigré communities faced, living in Belgium and the Netherlands, during this tumultuous period of modern history.

Éditer en exil en temps de régimes autoritaires en Europe médiane (1918-1989)
À l’occasion de cette journée, il s’agira d’appréhender l’Europe médiane entre 1918 et 1989, à la fois comme lieu de départ de dissidents à des régimes autoritaires s’exilant ailleurs dans le monde et lieu d’accueil pour certaines éditions d’exil. L’attention se portera avant tout sur l’expérience liée à la création de maisons d’éditions dans ces différents contextes. De Paris à New-York, de Berlin à Rome, en passant par des villes comme Prague ou Bucarest, ce phénomène éditorial constitue un objet d’étude en soi, ainsi qu’un observatoire privilégié pour mieux cerner les différentes dissidences ainsi exprimées. Une place particulière est occupée au sein de ce corpus par l’édition allophone, autrement dit, les publications dans des langues autres que celles établies / reconnues comme officielles et / ou minoritaires dans l’espace où elles voient le jour.

Les lieux institutionnels
Longtemps considérée comme périphérique, l’Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, – espace hétérogène possédant néanmoins certaines dynamiques propres bien identifiables – a progressivement retrouvé sa place dans une historiographie dynamique et renouvelée grâce aux apports de l’histoire transnationale, globale ou connectée. Le premier volet de ce futur rendez-vous pluriannuel intitulé « Les lieux du politique en Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, 1790-1990 » sera consacré aux lieux institutionnels.

Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the Films by Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The conference aims to study films directed by three acclaimed Central European and Balkanic documentary filmmakers who showed, through their filmic poetics, a special interest towards disqualified social groups. In parallel to the conference, multiple events will be held online: screenings, debates, masterclasses with Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik, tribute to Pál Schiffer, etc.

The event, consisting of an expert panel and a seminar, focuses on the experience of interwar East Central Europe to explore these historical parallels.

Italy and Yugoslavia in the Interwar Period
Monographic issue of “Qualestoria. Rivista di storia contemporanea”
The signing of the Treaty of Rapallo in 1920 made it possible to find a solution to the Italian-Yugoslav dispute over the north-eastern Adriatic border, a solution that would last substantially until the Italian invasion of the neighbouring kingdom in World War 2. Relations between Italy and Yugoslavia, particularly since the end of the 1920s, with the beginning of the more decidedly revisionist phase of fascist foreign policy regarding the structures of the Danubian-Balkan area, were never easy. However, the signing of the Treaty of Rapallo represented an undoubtedly important moment, which greatly contributed to restore a climate of collaboration between the two countries, heavily jeopardized by border nationalism and by the D’Annunzio’s “impresa di Fiume”, interrupted precisely by the Treaty of Rapallo.

Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

The multiple Antiquities of Greek modernity (19th-21st centuries)
Dans un XIXe siècle où la discussion sur les origines nationales bat son plein dans toute l’Europe, les Grecs auraient-ils pu se dispenser d’une instance de légitimation aussi flatteuse et aussi prometteuse que l’Antiquité ? De fait, la Grèce ancienne devient d’emblée, un élément déterminant dans l’élaboration difficultueuse d’une identité néo-hellénique et d’une l’idéologie étatique. Nous voudrions explorer ce retour du passé dans le présent en questionnant la diversité et l’hétérogénéité des « Antiquités » créées et véhiculées aux XIXe et XXe siècles, le contexte (national, culturel, politique) dans lequel les diverses, et souvent contradictoires, représentations de l’Antiquité ont été formulées en interférant les unes avec les autres, les manières dont le contexte dominant de l’histoire nationale a été consolidé ou sapé par d’autres cadres de pensée projetant sur l’Antiquité des demandes alternatives.

Jalons pour un projet de recherche collectif sur les cultures visuelles à Thessalonique
Selanik, Salonique, Thessalonique est, au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, un lieu de vie et de côtoiement de Grecs orthodoxes, Turcs musulmans, Dönme, Serbes, Bulgares, Arméniens grégoriens, Albanais, Tsiganes et, surtout de Juifs sépharades particulièrement nombreux – une mosaïque de communautés dont témoignent, en langue française, les travaux de Meropi Anastassiadou. Or la ville semble entretenir un rapport fusionnel aux images reproductibles fixes et animées. Cette relation que nous postulons intime et particulièrement marquante, nous paraît prégnante durant une longue période de bouleversements politiques, culturels et sociaux couvrant a minima la fin de l’Empire ottoman, l’avènement de l’État grec moderne jusqu’à l’annexion nazie même si l’après-seconde guerre mondiale (de la guerre civile à la metapoliteusis) mériterait d’être envisagé.

Populism in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century
Since the 1990s, several political movements qualified as “populist” have emerged in Central and Eastern Europe, drawing the attention of political scientists. If we want to understand why these movements exercise such attraction and why they are so relentless in this space, it is necessary to cross the study of current politics with the analysis of long term developments. Indeed, since the 19th century, Central and Eastern Europe has known several movements and political parties that have called themselves or have been labelled as “populist”. In this sense, the long-term approach allows considering the similarities and the differences, according to different contexts and periods, and identifying the reasons and the mechanisms of action of these movements. At last, this historical approach helps to consider the specificity - if there is any specificity - of these movements in Central and Eastern Europe and to evaluate their impact on political cultures of the region.

25th Modern Greek Studies Conference of French-speaking universities
The biennial Congress of French-speaking Modern Greek Studies scholars will take place from October 12th to October 14th, 2017 in Aix-en-Provence. Its aim is to bring together researchers from every domain of the humanities and social sciences. The issue at the heart of this 15th Congress is the historical progress of certain areas of study towards the status of full-fledged disciplines of the humanities and social sciences in Greece from the moment of the establishment of the Greek state (1830) and within a context allowing the study of this phenomenon in both its regional and its international dimensions.
The works of the Congress will be organized around the following themes:
1. The emergence, institutionalization, reproduction and diffusion of disciplinary bodies of knowledge.
2. The way each discipline positions itself with relation to other fields of knowledge and implements its theoretical foundations
3. The processes of establishing legitimacy for the new disciplines and for the groups framing them
4. Disciplinarization and the field of Modern Greek Studies
Abstracts must be submitted before February 28th, 2017, in either French or English.

Balkans workshop reading workshop (2016-17)
L'atelier Balkans est conçu comme un espace de dialogue et de discussion pour les jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur les Balkans. L'atelier de lecture proposé cette année aura pour objectif d'interroger les représentations des Balkans et leurs transformations sociales, économiques et politiques contemporaines. Dans le cadre de nos questionnements, plutôt qu'un lieu, les Balkans pourront être considérés comme un projet (Bakic-Hayden 1995). À partir de la diversité des cas nationaux, la lecture des articles proposés nous permettra d'appréhender les Balkans à travers leurs spécificités mais aussi comme un laboratoire pertinent pour des interrogations dépassant largement leur cadre : mémoire du communisme, travail, genre, économie de la dette.

Des spécialistes de l’Antiquité, du haut Moyen Âge et de littérature contemporaine explorerons les relations complexes établies entre les Balkans et l’Italie sur la longue durée. Au carrefour des multiples héritages de cette histoire plurimillénaire, l’espace adriatique actuel possède-t-il une forme d’unité propre, par-delà les frontières politiques et culturelles communément admises ? Une table ronde portera sur la question des migrations et des frontières aujourd'hui.
