Acteurs, thèmes et scénarios dans le long XIXe Siècle

L’objectif de ce dossier d’Almanack, la revue d’histoire de l’Université fédérale de São Paulo est de rassembler des articles de recherche originaux explorant, sous un angle historique, les acteurs, les thématiques et les scénarios qui ont structuré les relations colombo-brésiliennes au cours du long XIXᵉ siècle. Nous privilégierons les contributions issues de l’histoire politique, diplomatique, économique et transnationale, sans exclure les apports de l’histoire sociale ou culturelle traitant des questions internationales proposées. L’usage rigoureux des sources primaires constituera un critère essentiel pour la sélection des articles.

L’acculturation du droit français dans les anciennes colonies d’Amérique (Québec, Haïti, Louisiane)

L’existence de codes civils, et parfois de traditions civilistes, dans les sociétés postcoloniales en terres d’Amérique, est plus que symbolique sur les plans politique, culturel et même linguistique. La fin du XVIII^e siècle au Québec, et le début du XIX^e siècle en Haïti et en Louisiane, marquent une période de flottement entre, d’une part, la tradition civiliste (Québec) ou la codification (Haïti, Louisiane) et, d’autre part, l’influence du droit de common law anglais (Québec) ou américain (Louisiane). Le droit civil français est globalement envisagé de manière favorable pour régir la société dans les anciennes colonies d’outre-Atlantique. C’est aussi, dans une certaine mesure, le droit public français qui sert de modèle (à travers l’adoption de différentes constitutions en Haïti) ou d’inspiration sur afin d’éclairer des questions précises (par exemple, la distinction entre citoyenneté et nationalité en Louisiane et en Haïti).

Crime, Surveillance and Mobilities in the Atlantic, 19th and 20th centuries

As part of the project International collaborations: crime and police cooperation in the Ibero-American Atlantic, 1870-1940, financed by the of the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation of Portugal and hosted by CIES-Iscte, this international meeting aims to bring together researchers working in the study of criminal behaviours of a transnational nature, transnational mobilities and the development of forms of international and transnational political and cross-border surveillance, involving the Atlantic and connecting Europe, the Americas and Africa, during the 19th and 20th centuries. This congress aims to contribute to the expansion and deepening of the historiographical debate surrounding the transnational movement of people and the surveillance of international crime in the Atlantic axis.

Se sont-elles opposées à l’extrême droite ou ont-elles préféré d'autres stratégies pour la contenir et/ou coexister avec elle ? Dans un même temps, il nous paraît important de reconstruire le point de vue de l'extrême droite : comment a-t-elle représenté et raconté cette coexistence ? Comment a-t-elle composé avec l’héritage du fascisme ? Comment et jusqu’à quel point s’est-elle acculturée à la démocratie ?

Du « commun » au « public » : concepts et pratiques de l’ordre social dans l’espace culturel ibéro-américain (XVIIIe-XIXe siècles)

Cette rencontre scientifique propose de réfléchir à travers deux axes fondamentaux : premièrement, les modalités selon lesquelles les conceptions corporatives et juridictionnelles traditionnelles du lien social dans la monarchie traditionnelle espagnole sont adaptées, juxtaposées, contrastées, etc. avec l’imaginaire éclairé et libéral, à partir du XVIII^e siècle et tout au long du XIX^e, sur le plan institutionnel, normatif et discursif. Deuxièmement, les réappropriations, réinterprétations et usages –intentionnels ou naïfs – de ces termes par les sujets ; usages qui ont complexifié le réseau de relations traditionnellement décrit par l’historiographie en termes de résistance à la formation d’une nouvelle conception de l’autorité publique légitime.

Natural Rights and Politics in the Early Modern Period

Despite the ubiquity of the idea of human rights in our political culture, and its strong presence in the work of political scientists, jurists and contemporary historians, scholarly interest in natural rights — the tradition from which human rights are drawn — remains sporadic and fragmentary. This interdisciplinary workshop aims to deepen and broaden our understanding of the political uses and development of natural rights in the Early Modern Period, in Europe, the Atlantic world and beyond. By interrogating the relationship between natural rights and politics, this will be an occasion not only to analyze natural rights as a theoretical concept, but also and above all to study the different uses of concepts drawn from natural rights in precise political contexts, the political projects they served, their relationship with republicanism, and the emergence and evolution of particular rights.

5th Annual North American Environment, Energy, & Natural Resources Conference

Even as the world shut down in 2020 from covid-19, ESG (Environmental Social and Governance) investing and principles accelerated their domination of the operation of and investment in the private sector. These accelerating trends came despite initial fears that the COVID crisis would slow consideration of ESG. In fact, ESG investments outperformed the broader market, and ESG related projects can command a premium in investment and lender interest. Historic fossil fuel emitters are not exempt. In a two month span in early 2021, several large legacy oil companies indicated an intent to become carbon neutral and to accelerate diversification into renewable energies.

New Outlooks on the Napoleonic Empire

Young Napoleonists’ Conference in the Bicentenary of Napoleon’s Death (1821-2021)

Since the 1990s, the multifaceted political and social transformation started by the Napoleonic era (1799-1815) has gained increasing scholarly attention; even if these studies have, for the most part, focused on the changes that took place within the Napoleonic Europe, the scope continues to broaden toward a global-scale geography. The same is true for the angles of research from which the period can be examined: recently, historians have started to deal not only with such classic issues as military or political history, but also to address the diverse range of questions posed by the interdisciplinary study of empires. It is only fair that, as the bicentenary of Napoleon’s death (1769-1821) approaches, we seize the chance to showcase and discuss the research that young historians are pursuing on the Napoleonic legacy and its impact on the existing order.

Refugees and the (Global) Cold War

This international workshop will chart the intersection between refugee history and Cold War history. The most well-known connection between these two fields is the figure of the political refugee fleeing from the socialist East to the democratic West. As recent research in both areas has highlighted, however, forced displacement and Cold War competition were global phenomena. To explore the entanglement of refugee history and Cold War history in its full scope - including the above-mentioned anticommunist refugees, who remain a crucial part of the story - the workshop invites a broad range of contributions in terms of chronology, geography, and methodology, from PhD students, early career researchers, and established scholars.

Relations internationales et droit(s) (1815-1914)

Acteurs, institutions, législations comparées

Même si dans les vingt dernières années l’histoire du droit et des relations internationales a été largement renouvelée, beaucoup de zone d’ombres demeurent notamment sur l’histoire socio-culturelle de la formation de la discipline du droit international dans les années 1815-1869. Le but de ce colloque est d’étudier justement le lien entre droit(s) et relations internationales à travers les acteurs, les institutions et les travaux de législation comparée. Trois axes principaux seront donc envisagés. Les acteurs du droit international, c’est-à-dire les jurisconsultes des ministères des affaires étrangères, les avocats, les juges, les activistes, les publicistes, les journalistes et les éditeurs. Les institutions dans lesquelles le droit international s’est développé : les ministères des affaires étrangères, les tribunaux, les universités, les académies des sciences, les associations, les bibliothèques. Enfin, les travaux de législations comparées très liés avec le droit international avant leur progressive autonomie.
