Playing with uncertainty, gambling with crises
The rise of Gambling, mechanisms and consequences
This session aims to analyse the rise of gambling in Africa as a major social, economic, and territorial phenomenon. It will examine the reconfiguration of gambling spaces linked to digitalisation, as well as the role of betting in a context shaped by precarity and uncertainty as experienced by urban youth. Through several papers and a roundtable discussion devoted to the Senegalese case, the session will highlight the global circulations and North–South asymmetries that structure this rapidly expanding industry.

Economy of leftovers and recycling
Social, political and environmental dynamics in the Global South
Economies built around waste – rubbish, unsold goods, surplus, scrap, used materials – are becoming increasingly important in the Global South. This issue therefore aims to examine these forms of economic activity from three main perspectives: environmental, socio-economic and political. The objective is to bring together empirical and theoretical work that documents, compares and problematises these waste economies based on surveys conducted in Southern countries, while taking into account the circulation and cross-influences with Northern countries. These ‘waste products’ can take various forms, which the issue intends to consider in an open and pluralistic perspective.

Thus, we invite scholars working in various disciplines and fields of study to participate in the III International H/Story Seminar, Communism in Historical Fiction. Translation Networks in the Decolonising World, 1950s–1970s
This conference seeks to redress narratives that often overlook translation’s role in shaping political and cultural transformation by foregrounding the networks of translation that enabled dialogue between communities, intellectuals, and revolutionary movements across Africa, Asia, and Latin America between the 1950s and 1970s. It aims to explore how translation practices facilitated the circulation of anti-colonial ideas, shaped notions of identity and sovereignty, and influenced the formation of new political and cultural realities in the decolonising world.

Underground Monuments in the Literatures and the Arts of the Global South
During this conference, we will aim to question the modalities through which an underground power could be exercised and embodied, one that refuses to establish domination, whether through its actions or through the signs that materialize it. We propose to conduct this reflection from the perspective of the Global South, as spaces that are often identified, notably, by the subordinate position they are deemed to occupy within historical, cultural, and economic power relations in colonial or postcolonial contexts. Reflecting on the conditions under which an underground force and monumentality might emerge could allow for a reconfiguration of the established balances within the Global South, by considering other criteria for defining power.

In 2024, the 77th Festival of Cannes' short film competition selected Amarela (2024),a film by Japanese-Brazilian director André Hayato Saito, which focuses on the experiencesof Japanese-Brazilians. This event reflects a growing interest in a diverse, transnational, andmultilingual filmography on the subject of the Japanese diaspora, particularly theJapanese-Brazilians, who are the largest group affected by return migration (or “detourmigration” (Perroud, 2007)) to Japan. This Young Researchers Colloquium aims atvisualizing and discussing that film corpus and its aesthetic, socio-historical andmethodological issues.

This international conference on "Gender and Social Protection: Issues, Challenges, and Opportunities" aims to analyze the interactions between social protection and gender equality in developing countries. Through a multidisciplinary and comparative approach, it seeks to explore how social protection policies and programs can either mitigate or reinforce gender inequalities. Bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, the event aims to identify key challenges, share best practices, and formulate recommendations for a more inclusive and equitable social protection system.

Philosophy and the National Question
Taking as its starting point the idea of “philosophical nationalism” proposed by Jacques Derrida, this seminar aims to question the way in which different national and nationalist discourses have accompanied both the construction of modern philosophical historiography and the development of comparative or intercultural philosophy. The division of the world into “philosophical nations” still constitutes today the starting point of any comparative effort and leads to making the “dialogue between traditions” a discourse tending to legitimize national ideologies.

This workshop challenges traditional East-West Cold War narratives by examining the cultural interactions between communist Europe and the Global South. We will primarily focus on art, culture, and heritage as sources of new insights into historical narratives. We ask the following questions: How can artistic expression contribute to the rethinking of historical narratives? How have political circumstances shaped artistic and cultural production, and vice versa? What were the underlying power dynamics? And what are the contemporary legacies of such interactions?

The Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art (CIHA) and the Comité International des Sciences Historiques (CISH) during the Cold War
The Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art (CIHA) and the Comité International des Sciences Historiques (CISH) played a crucial role in the advancement of scholarship in the fields of Art History and History during the Cold War. We invite submissions of 20-minute papers exploring the history of these international organisations and their role in fostering transnational networks, cultural exchanges, and theoretical and methodological debates between scholars. We are also interested in local structures and the impact of international meetings on the development of national historiographies. We especially encourage papers focused on the Eastern Bloc and the Global South.

Ce cycle de conférences exposera comment leurs milieux de vie sont menacés de disparition et leur existence bouleversée dans ses dimensions matérielles, sociales et culturelles. Il présentera aussi les stratégies que ces peuples développent face aux effets délétères de l’anthropocène.

Ce que les toilettes nous disent : des pratiques aux hiérarchies sociales

Partant du constat que la question des toilettes – terme générique que nous utiliserons – est à la fois universelle et peu envisagée par les sciences humaines, si ce n’est par les études des sciences et des techniques, ce numéro de Suds (anciennement Les Cahiers d’Outre-Mer) souhaite aborder cette question sous un angle multidisciplinaire, mais toujours en prenant en compte leur aspect spatial, social et, somme toute, dynamique. Les objectifs principaux de ce numéro sont, d’une part, interroger la matérialité des toilettes mais aussi la manière dont elles expliquent les organisation et inégalités spatiales ; et d’autre part, questionner les liens qui se tissent entre toilettes, hiérarchies sociales et rapports de pouvoir.

Development archives: production, use and politicization
Revue internationale des études du développement n°256 (2024-3)
The first aim of this Special Issue is methodological: the renewed interest in development archives raises questions, particularly among young researchers, about how to identify, collect, and use them, and about their limits. The special issue will thus offer a set of methodological reference points to anyone wishing to use such archives. The second aim will be to lay the foundations for a more ambitious project to study development archives from a perspective at the crossroads of “connected history” and “global historical sociology”.

Les politiques du logement social dans les villes du Sud au XXIe siècle
Ce numéro de Suds (anciennement Cahiers d’Outre-Mer) a pour ambition de faire le point sur les politiques en faveur du logement social mises en œuvre progressivement dans les Suds à partir du début des années 1990, dont l’une des particularités principales est de s’appuyer sur la promotion immobilière privée. L’objectif principal n’est pas tant de décrire et d’analyser les dispositifs sur lesquels se fondent ces politiques, aujourd’hui de plus en plus critiquées, ni d’établir un diagnostic concernant leur (in)efficacité pour loger le plus grand nombre. Il s’agit avant tout de s’intéresser aux dynamiques sociales et spatiales que ces politiques en faveur du logement social produisent, ainsi qu’à celles dans lesquelles elles s’insèrent, dans le but de comprendre comment la problématique du logement social s’articule aux importantes reconfigurations urbaines, sociales et politiques qui sont à l’œuvre depuis le début du XXIe siècle dans les villes des Suds.
