Centennial of the Great Syrian Revolt (1925-2025)
The symposium will explore the 1925-1927 Great Syrian Revolt and its various interpretations throughout a ‘Century of Revolutions’. The actors, initiating factors and dynamics of the movement will be discussed, as will be the relationships between the countryside, cities and the ‘bâdiyya’ (the Syrian desert). Both the thawra itself and its violent repression will be studied, and great attention will be granted to peripheries beyond typical Syrian borders. The new opportunities which could arise from the fall of the al-Assad regime in December 2024, in particular access to new archival documents and data, will be at the centre of our discussions. Finally, this centenary will enable us to analyse the Great Syrian Revolt as a cultural phenomenon, and not solely a political and military struggle.

La place des Lumières dans les pays arabo et/ou musulmans
Pour une nouvelle approche des liens Orient/Occident
Plusieurs phénomènes justifient une nouvelle problématique moins tournée vers le regard de l’Occident sur les pays musulmans que sur une construction d’un Occident à l’intérieur de ces mêmes pays. Les révolutions arabes en renouant avec la geste insurrectionnelle ont assigné les pays occidentaux à une situation de stagnation et de fermeture confirmée par les replis nationalistes ces dernières années. L’on doit s’interroger sur la définition des Lumières, objet en perpétuelle construction mais aussi redéfinir les espaces arabo-musulmans.

Despite their numerical preponderance among the missionary workforce exercising a Christian apotolate at the end of the Ottoman Empire, women have long attracted less work than men. A rebalancing is in progress, spurred on by the gender studies and extended to the whole Muslim world. We will focus on real encounter and conflict situations, avoiding an essentialist approach to Islam and considering the extreme diversity of the field strategies and practices. This approach will be carried out in equal parts, in a decentering and critical way, far from denominational approaches.

Le XXIe forum du Réseau transméditerranéen de recherche en communication (RTRC) entend questionner une nouvelle fois la dialectique entre l’espoir de communication transméditerranéenne et la réalité des incommunications, sans occulter l’épée de Damoclès que représentent aujourd’hui les risques réels de l’acommunication. Le RTRC interroge ces concepts au prisme d’un acteur montant et tendanciellement hégémonique de nos pratiques communicationnelles : les plateformes numériques. Les propositions sélectionnées feront l'objet d'une valorisation post-colloque dans la perspective de la publication d’un ouvrage collectif.

How can we look at Iranian cinema and the visual arts in relation to Iran today when the country has been experiencing an important episode of uprising and resistance, since September 16, 2022? Indeed, as in 1979, 1999, and 2009, and as in 2017 and 2018, it is obvious that images play a decisive role in the constitution of events. Iranian artists and filmmakers are indeed demonstrating an exceptional mobilization and effervescence in order to bear witness to the ongoing protests, but also to support them and mobilize international public opinion.

Social Changes in Contemporary Southeast Asia
Exploring New Forms of Labour Regimes
As social, ethnic or religious, identity or position in the political hierarchy is more often pronounced in Southeast Asian societies, labour is rarely at the centre. In particular, labour does not often appear to be at the root of the formation of inequalities. In reality, the labour factor - including migrant labour - clearly fuels the regional dynamics of growth, and enables trade specialisation just as its mobilisation has, in the colonial past, enabled insertion into the international division of labour. This conference seeks to bring labour back in at the centre of the analysis. Offering a rare opportunity to pay tribute to the main oeuvres and pioneering authors in the field in Southeast Asia, it will open space to recent ongoing research on social changes with respect to labour relations, working conditions, labour norms, and wages.

Institutional change in Japanese agriculture
Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), a nationwide network of farm cooperatives, is under increasing pressure to expand farmer incomes by adapting coop strategies to changing market incentives. Some coops have adapted more successfully than others. In Betting on the Farm, Patricia L. Maclachlan and Kay Shimizu attribute these differences to three sets of local variables: resource endowments and product-specific market conditions, coop leadership, and the organization of farmer-members behind new coop strategies.

Les situations japonaise et française présentent à la fois des similitudes et des différences dont l’analyse permettrait d’éclairer les transformations récentes du traitement social du handicap et celles à engager dans l’avenir afin de faire face aux défis démographiques, dans le respect des droits et de la citoyenneté des personnes. Ce séminaire vise à réunir des chercheurs français et japonais travaillant sur les questions liées au handicap qui ont eu à ce jour très peu d'opportunités d'échanges académiques. Il s’agit d’une première étape dans l’objectif de la création d’un réseau académique franco-japonais.

This special edition aims to gain insight into how the use of the legal system and litigation have evolved. In Japan, recourse to the courts is relatively rare, but litigations have increased since the end of the 1980s in areas such as labour, consumer protection, family law and, more recently, climate change. Is a process of “judicialization” (shihōka) underway in Japan?

Petropolitics in the Countries of the South

For this special issue, we consider a broad approach to the world of hydrocarbons, ranging from economics to cultural issues, and including history, politics, demography, sociology, and anthropology. Our aim is to go beyond a conception that reduces oil-producing countries to black boxes with outgoing flows of oil and gas and incoming financial flows, thus boiling everything down to this single (economic, political, and geopolitical) issue. Before causing global warming, oil had an in situ impact on territories, human communities, and ecosystems. This approach calls for a critical rereading of the abundant literature on the oil-producing countries of the South, in order to tackle oil-related phenomena differently, to identify new connections between them, and to examine those which are only little or not studied.

Understanding China, understanding the world
China scholars have long worked in a closed circuit and China studies have rarely been able to have a disciplinary impact beyond their field. After 1978’s Open and reform policy, Chinese scholars have intensely striven to catch up with Western concepts and theories and have, along with foreign scholars, tried to apply them to Chinese contexts. Since the 2010s and China’s greater rise and confidence, academia has also engaged in indigenization (bentuhua), and some researchers have tried to build and use local concepts presumably better suited to China’s conditions. These endeavors have however mostly failed to China being a “limit case”, some analyses however manage to enlighten cases beyond China’s borders. As David Ownby said, Chinese intellectuals “speak to the world” and it is high time Chinese studies, and more specifically political science and sociology in our case, speak to the academic community at large.

Public space / private spaces in the light of the Arab Spring
À rebours des représentations officielles, médiatiques et néo-orientalistes de la division entre espace public/espace(s) privé(s), l’objectif de ce huitième colloque du Cercle des chercheurs sur le Moyen-Orient (CCMO) est d’analyser leurs chevauchements, leurs imbrications et interactions, voire leur caractère interchangeable : un espace privé étant susceptible à tout moment de se muer en espace public et inversement, un espace public pouvant épouser des logiques de privatisation et d’appropriation particulariste par un clan, une milice, une faction ou encore des groupes porteurs de causes spécifiques liées au genre, à la classe d’âge, à l’origine sociale ou encore à l’appartenance locale. Ce colloque invite à complexifier et à déconstruire cette opposition rigide entre espace public au singulier et espaces privés au pluriel, en interrogeant notamment la manière dont le politique se déploie dans des espaces privés ou semi-privés.

Favorisant une approche diachronique et objective, cette rencontre vise à analyser davantage les relations entre la France et ses anciennes colonies afin d’en mieux saisir les relations contemporaines. Les réflexions menées et présentées permettront de réaliser une analyse des risques engendrés par le maintien des structures coloniales. Un des enjeux consiste à mettre en lumière la façon dont le processus de décolonisation a rendu les territoires vulnérables, du fait de leur évolution politique, et surtout la manière dont le droit s’est adapté ou a été impacté, par la nécessité d’appréhender et d’administrer les risques qu’il a induits. Enfin, ces journées d’études visent à interroger principalement le droit et à croiser l’approche juridique avec les autres sciences humaines et sociales. Chercheurs de différentes disciplines, ainsi qu’académiciens et politiciens, analysent dans une approche interdisciplinaire, le rôle des acteurs, les moyens mis en œuvre et les finalités d’une histoire ayant déterminé les relations entre la France et ses anciennes colonies.

1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)
The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

Towards a New Social History of Sudan
Cette conférence, qui est également un programme de recherche, souhaite remettre au centre de l’histoire moderne et contemporaine du Soudan les « gens ordinaires ». Nous souhaitons également nous intéresser à tous les thèmes liés à l’histoire des gens « exceptionnellement normaux » (Grendi 1977) : le quotidien, les croyances, les horizons et désirs, dans toute leur diversité selon classe sociale et origine, mais aussi dans tous leurs liens et circulations. Même si la microhistoire a surtout marqué l’historiographie européenne, elle a inspiré aussi des nombreuses études en histoire du Moyen Orient et de l’Afrique (voir l’historiographie de l’Afrique du Sud). Elle a aussi des affinités avec des historiographies non-européennes comme les Études subalternes (malgré leurs différences reconnues). Nous croyons que le croisement de ces approches ne peut que mener à une meilleure connaissance des acteurs et actrices « ordinaires ».

Ce seminaire a pour objectif d’explorer et d’interroger les philosophies, les idées et les utopies sur lesquelles reposent les mouvements de retour à la terre dans leur dimension culturelle et historique au Japon et en Europe. Les conceptions de la nature et de la vie sont au cœur de ces pensées et des mouvements sociaux écologistes. C’est pourquoi ce seminaire abordera les pensées de la nature, la notion de vie dans la pensée européenne et japonaise, et comment ces notions prennent forme, circulent, sont adaptées et participent des transformations sociales.

Y a-t-il des liens entre l’islamisme, la violence au nom de l’islam et les conflits identitaires dans le monde d’aujourd’hui ? Comment l’islamisme et l’islamophobie se nourrissent-ils l’un et l’autre ? Quels sont les difficultés et enjeux épistémologiques et méthodologiques qui entravent l’étude de l’islamisme dans les sciences humaines et sociales ?
