Past and future of archaeological collections
Field exploration, movements, preservation (19th-21st c.)
This symposium will concentrate on the creation, transmission and movements of prehistoric collections –including natural history specimens, human remains, and artefacts–, from the colonial era to the present day. Particular emphasis will be placed on collections from Southeast Asia, however, case studies drawn from other historical and geographical contexts will also be represented.

L’histoire et le patrimoine ont toujours été des terrains d’affrontement idéologique et politique. En Syrie, le régime baathiste a instrumentalisé l’histoire pour asseoir sa légitimité, effaçant la diversité des appartenances. La chute du régime soulève des questions sur l’usage politique de l’histoire et le rôle des historiens dans cette transition. Cette journée d’étude explore comment l’histoire et le patrimoine peuvent accompagner la reconstruction de la société syrienne.

We invite archaeologists, historians, anthropologists, media and communication scholars, heritage curators, and witnesses to discuss these pioneering figures, focusing on their excavation methods, conservation techniques, and efforts to share knowledge about their archaeological finds.

From the Bronze Age to the Islamic Period
The aim of the symposium is to study the overland and maritime routes of the Arabian Peninsula and the exchanges they made possible, through archaeology, history, philology, religion and life sciences. This topic will be addressed in the longue durée, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic period. The symposium will also examine the networks of exchanges with border regions such as the Indian subcontinent, the Horn of Africa and Egypt, as well as the empires of the Ancient Near East, and the Greek and Roman empires.

14th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Mobilités, transferts et circulations : le triptyque formé par ces termes place la réflexion que les Journées d'étude des doctorants du CIHAM 2024 aspirent mener dans une perspective dynamique – dynamique des structures politiques et administratives, dynamique des mobilités humaines et des infrastructures qu’elles nécessitent, dynamique des motifs et des modèles littéraires qui se diffusent au sein d’aires culturelles et linguistiques connectées. Ces journées d'étude souhaitent susciter une réflexion transdisciplinaire, entre littérature, histoire et archéologie ; à la croisée des mondes médiévaux chrétiens et musulmans, conformément aux intérêts fondateurs du laboratoire du CIHAM – UMR 5648.

Architecture of the Past: inspiration for the Future
Architecture, in response to universal needs, has developed in various forms, in diverse environments, and consequently offers a multiplicity of solutions. This diversity of construction types is of interest to numerous disciplines that do not often have the opportunity to exchange ideas. The aim of this interdisciplinary event is to bring together archaeologists, historians, architects, artisans, conservators, restorers, and ethnologists to share their work and research on architectural practices and structures that are relevant to approach current and future environmental, social, and economic challenges. This event will also discuss how the architecture of tomorrow is also invented with an eye to the past, whether it be sophisticated or vernacular, regardless of materials, period, or geographical and cultural area. A list of themes are suggested and detailed in the full call for proposal.

The Levant and the Mediterranean

At the crossroads of the Near East and the eastern Mediterranean, the Levant has always been a multicultural area, a zone of contact between Asia, Africa and Europe. Since the 19th century, archaeological digs have been revealing the archaeology and history of this region. This issue of Technè reflects the changes and challenges facing archaeology in this region, and highlights the contribution of a multidisciplinary approach to the knowledge and preservation of the Levant's heritage, from the Neolithic period to the end of the Middle Ages.

Incarnation, matérialités, cosmogonies » pris dans une double approche ethnologique / anthropologique et archéologique, ce qui permet d’aborder les terrains et les concepts à partir des pierres naturelles ou travaillées par l’homme. Cela peut être entrepris dans le domaine de la culture matérielle, par exemple de la pierre taillée, gravée ou creusée, ou dans celui de la modélisation anthropique du paysage pour des raisons stratégiques, agricoles, symboliques ou esthétiques.

Expressions territoriales du pouvoir de l’antiquité à l’époque moderne
Ce colloque international, transpériodique, est né d’une collaboration interinstitutionnelle qui s’est développée dans le cadre du projet « Réseaux aristocratiques et pouvoir territorial de l’Antiquité à l’époque moderne » soutenu par la MSHS-Sud-Est. Fruit d’une réflexion commune conduite par des enseignants-chercheurs et chercheurs historiens et archéologues des époques antique, médiévale et moderne de l’Université Côte d’Azur (membres du CEPAM et de l’URMIS) et de leurs partenaires (ARSCAN, CIHAM, CRH, Centre Roland Mousnier), ce projet a placé au cœur de ses préoccupations le rapport que les détenteurs du pouvoir entretiennent avec le territoire et la manière dont ce pouvoir imprime sa marque sur le territoire, voire le façonne.

L’appel du large (rencontre finale) : vie et sociétés portuaires
Le projet « L’appel du large » a été initié en 2019 par les enseignants-chercheurs spécialistes d’histoire ancienne du « Centre de recherche et d’études ‘Histoire et sociétés’ » (CREHS) de l’université d’Artois. Il consiste, d’une manière générale, à explorer les interactions entre les sociétés humaines et ces espaces particuliers que sont les mers et les fleuves, en donnant une place à part entière aux embouchures et deltas, qui constituent des interfaces et des environnements remarquables. Cette rencontre clôt la série commencée en 2019, en portant l’attention sur les ports et les sociétés portuaires.

À la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle, les bibliothèques occidentales ont enrichi leurs collections avec des manuscrits issus des communautés juives du Caire, sous le nom de Manuscrits de la Genizah du Caire. La quatorzième journée d’étude en paléographie et diplomatique hébraïques s’adresse à tous les chercheurs travaillant sur les collections de la Genizah du Caire conservées dans les institutions françaises.

Archéologie de la production céramique et des espaces artisanaux : regards croisés
From the 8th millennium BCE onwards, pottery production developed in Southwestern Asia and became a significant trait of Neolithic societies. Ceramic material is widely adopted. It represented a revolution on several scales and quickly constituted an important part of production activities. Thus, the objective of this workshop is to propose a transdisciplinary meeting about the methodologies of studying pottery manufacture sites, through examples from various contexts from prehistoric times to the contemporary period, and with a special interest in alternative approaches.

Andalusi Architecture: Shapes, Meaning and Influences
“Arts” journal
The goal of this special issue of Arts is to gather knowledge regarding Andalusi art and inspire readers to learn more about it. Indeed, the importance of Andalusi art in its developmental stage and in the evolution of Hispanic architecture is undeniable. At present, a large group of monuments and archaeological remains continue to remind us of that great period of history in the Iberian Peninsula (from the 8th to the 15th century). Accordingly, and in consequence, a few years ago, Arts published a Special Issue titled “Andalusi Architecture: Shapes, Meaning and Influences” to highlight the importance of Andalusi art in the scientific community, and numerous prominent international specialists participated. The importance of this publication lies in the dissemination of artistic elements of Andalusian art, not only during the 8th and 15th centuries, but also in later centuries as a reminder of their influence.
