  "Images and the imagination of the city" - the case of Beirut

  Cette séance mettra l’accent sur le Liban, en scrutant le cas de la ville de Beyrouth. La stratification urbaine qu’a connue Beyrouth à travers son histoire complexe,et les mutations brutales qu’ont subi le paysage urbain, ainsi que les formes architecturales et le tissu social ont généré une multitude d’images de la ville qui se confrontent encore actuellement. Nous retrouvons, entre autres, une Beyrouth contée par des habitants témoins des âges prospères d'une ville vivante, active, ou une Beyrouth portant les stigmates d’une nouvelle cartographie imposée par les violences d’une guerre civile ou encore une Beyrouth aseptisée, promue par des bailleurs privés. Face à ces identités conflictuelles, et à une privatisation progressive, due à une politique d'état conciliante, les espaces de la ville ont davantage de mal à accueillir un débat politique(au sens large du terme) libre et accessible à tous.

  Calliope International Conference

  Speaking as the 'Other' is organised by the ERC-funded project Calliope: Vocal Articulations of Parliamentary Identity and Empire (University of Helsinki). This multidisciplinary conference seeks to examine performative, embodied and acoustic histories of articulating political representation and colonial ‘otherness’. To that end, we intend to extend the focus beyond established Anglophone analyses of the metropole and colony, and indeed, beyond the disciplinary pre-eminence of Anglophone postcolonial studies.

  (Re)reading travellers to the East

  Shaping identities and building the nation in post-unification Italy

  The conference (Re)reading Travellers to the East, shaping identities and nation-building in post-unification Italy approaches early modern travel literature (15th-18th centuries) from an innovative historiographical perspective. Rather than to discuss the documentary value of these sources for the times and spaces in which they were produced, the aim is to focus on the re-readings and re-editions to which they have been subjected, in order to highlight how travel literature has been (re)used for political and ideological purposes. The conference examines the way in which these early modern documents have been mobilised, since the 19th century and up to the present day, in the context of the formation of collective identities and nation-building. The conference focuses on the relations between the Italian peninsula and the countries which, in modern times, were referred to as the Orient, the Indies or the Levant.

  Notre connaissance des premiers siècles du kalām repose presque exclusivement sur des doxographies dans lesquelles ont été consignées, classées et réarrangées les différentes thèses et doctrines des théologiens. Procédant par « unités de divergence », les traités de maqālāt sont un genre doxographique qui connut un essor dans le monde islamique aux III^e, IX^e et IV^e, X^e siècles. Nous examinerons lors de cette journée d’études les principaux traités de maqālāt de cette époque, à la fois en tant que source des premières grandes ontologies du kalām et en tant que genre autonome qui remplit un certain nombre de fonctions normatives, théologiques et politiques, au sein de la communauté religieuse.

After having studied those ambivalent constructions of warrior 'heroes', this new conference focuses on two other ambivalences associated with WWII : the position of host states towards exiles fleeing from nazism and the "survival ethic" of the exiles themselves.

  Refugees and the (Global) Cold War

  This international workshop will chart the intersection between refugee history and Cold War history. The most well-known connection between these two fields is the figure of the political refugee fleeing from the socialist East to the democratic West. As recent research in both areas has highlighted, however, forced displacement and Cold War competition were global phenomena. To explore the entanglement of refugee history and Cold War history in its full scope - including the above-mentioned anticommunist refugees, who remain a crucial part of the story - the workshop invites a broad range of contributions in terms of chronology, geography, and methodology, from PhD students, early career researchers, and established scholars.

  Les Cahiers d’Outre-Mer journal

  Ancrer l’action humanitaire dans des entrelacs politiques, parfois circonstanciels, permet de penser l’humanitaire aujourd’hui. Ce numéro thématique de la revue Les Cahiers d’Outre-Mer s’intéresse aux relations entre humanitaire et politique par le biais de trois axes. Quelle que soit la phase du processus humanitaire (allant des décisions stratégiques de bailleurs aux interactions avec les populations vulnérables sur le terrain) ou le type d’acteurs impliqués (organismes onusiens, coopérations internationales, membres de la société civile, ONG internationales [ONGI] ou locales, financés par des bailleurs privés ou publics, etc.), il s’agit de s’interroger sur l’humanitaire malgré la politique et l’humanitaire en tant que politique. Des contributions d’ordre méthodologiques sont aussi attendues.

  Understanding China, understanding the world

  China scholars have long worked in a closed circuit and China studies have rarely been able to have a disciplinary impact beyond their field. After 1978’s Open and reform policy, Chinese scholars have intensely striven to catch up with Western concepts and theories and have, along with foreign scholars, tried to apply them to Chinese contexts. Since the 2010s and China’s greater rise and confidence, academia has also engaged in indigenization (bentuhua), and some researchers have tried to build and use local concepts presumably better suited to China’s conditions. These endeavors have however mostly failed to China being a “limit case”, some analyses however manage to enlighten cases beyond China’s borders. As David Ownby said, Chinese intellectuals “speak to the world” and it is high time Chinese studies, and more specifically political science and sociology in our case, speak to the academic community at large.

  The Middle Ages and the manufacture of stereotypes?

  Malgré son apparente simplicité, la notion de stéréotype véhicule de nombreuses ambivalences et nuances au sujet de la notion de stéréotype. En effet, si celui-ci peut être propre à chaque individu, l’énonciation d’un stéréotype permet en général de se faire une idée des représentations collectives figées qui circulent dans un groupe. Le stéréotype, en tant qu’idée reçue sur un groupe qui représente l’altérité, participe de la projection de soi autant que de la représentation de l’autre. En définitive, étudier les stéréotypes d’une société permet de se rendre compte des processus évolutifs de construction des identités collectives. C'est l'objectif de ces journées d'étude, à travers l'étude des stéréotypes construits à l'époque médiévale mais également plus tard sur l'époque médiévale.
