The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Les artistes arabes, dont la réception de leur œuvre est souvent réduite à tort à une interprétation politique et à la lutte contre les oppressions politico-sociales, ont toujours osé et osent encore déconstruire le concept d’engagement, ne s’intéressant pas seulement à des sujets strictement arabes ni à des thématiques exclusivement politiques et collectives mais proposant des œuvres innovantes, tantôt plus intimes et subjectives, tantôt plus universelles sur des sujets concernant l’humanité entière et reflétant des enjeux sociétaux ou citoyens mondiaux, comme les défis environnementaux et la gestion des ressources naturelles, les pandémies, les concepts philosophiques, politiques et esthétiques, les enjeux et objectifs de la culture, la mise en question de la (post-)modernité, et toutes les questions qui animent le monde. Ainsi, les œuvres engagées visent-elles à la fois la reconnaissance d’une valeur esthétique d’une part et la dénonciation d’une situation, la critique d’une opinion ou la défense d’une cause, dans le contexte de revendication de la liberté d’expression, d’autre part.

Spatial Perception in Antiquity from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Taklamakan Desert

Spatial perception in antiquity is a fruitful and intriguing research area that has already received attention since the late 18^th century. The development of separate disciplines dealing with different cultures and sources has, however, led to an often-isolated treatment of such topics in the specific fields of history, philology and (historical) linguistics. This conference intends to provide the opportunity to overcome such isolated treatment and to strengthen the cooperation between the fields by establishing interdisciplinary discussions.

From the 8^th millennium BCE onwards, pottery production developed in Southwestern Asia and became a significant trait of Neolithic societies. Ceramic material is widely adopted. It represented a revolution on several scales and quickly constituted an important part of production activities. Thus, the objective of this workshop is to propose a transdisciplinary meeting about the methodologies of studying pottery manufacture sites, through examples from various contexts from prehistoric times to the contemporary period, and with a special interest in alternative approaches.

Judas the Galilean: the Man and his Significance

In 6 CE, while Quirinius was taking the census of Judea, the first Jewish opposition aroused against Roman presence in the region, led by a man known as Judas the Galilean (or the Gaulanite). According to Josephus, all subsequent troubles were the fact of this man. But who was Judas? Was he so important in the history? Was he even challenging Roman authorities? As usual in similar cases, the scholarly debates are endless about the man and his significance. This conference aims to survey all of the many faces of Judas in recent historiography and to discuss each evidence in order to estimate the true place of Judas in history.

Si l’habitat a d’abord été réduit à sa plus simple fonction, à savoir abriter ses occupants pendant les périodes de repos journaliers, il est rapidement aussi devenu le lieu où ses occupants se sustentent, font leur toilette et leurs besoins, et enfin également celui où ils travaillent, reçoivent, se divertissent, etc. Cette journée d’étude s’attachera à penser l’intérieur des maisons en s’interrogeant sur la fonctionnalité des espaces domestiques, sur leur spécialisation et sur leur dénomination. Ces questionnements intégreront aussi bien des réflexions sur l’architecture que sur le mobilier.

Floods and Other Destructions. Stories about the End in the Ancient Eastern Mediterranean

Le colloque porte sur la pratique de mise en récit des moments de crise, de destruction et de désagrégation sociale au sein de différentes civilisations du pourtour de la Méditerranée orientale ancienne (II^e-I^er millénaire av. J.-C.). À travers l’analyse des convergences et des divergences entre les modèles narratifs concernés – issus de la Grèce ancienne et de la Mésopotamie, du Levant et de l’ancien Israël – on examinera les éléments linguistiques et les conceptions mobilisés afin de décrire ce qui détruit – mais aussi, en contre-jour, ce qui fonde – l’identité d’une société et de ses institutions, ainsi que sa manière de se mettre en relation avec le divin et la sphère religieuse. La perspective transversale et interdisciplinaire du colloque permettra également de discuter la possibilité d’inscrire les récits et discours analysés dans un horizon culturel partagé, où chaque civilisation vient inscrire ses spécificités.

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year, it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. What agency do men and women exercise in the production of a specific denomination of the divine? How can we question their choices, their anchoring in a tradition or their innovation strategies?

Photographic archaeology - from excavation to the writing of history

De la fouille à l'écriture de l'Histoire

Cette année, le cycle de conférences dédiée à l’archéologie est pensé en lien avec la photographie et l’exposition de Josef Koudelka, Ruines qui se tient à la Bibliothèque nationale de France du 21 avril au 19 juillet 2020. Ce thème permet à l’artiste de dialoguer avec Alain Schnapp, auteur de Ruines : essai de perspective comparée (2015) et d’une série de conférences Musée du Louvre / ENS « Une histoire universelle des ruines » en 2014. Depuis 30 ans, Josef Koudelka photographie des sites archéologiques du bassin méditerranéen dont certains ont disparu. D’un autre point de vue, la photographie est devenue un partenaire indispensable des fouilles, accompagnant l’archéologue depuis le repérage du site, la documentation du travail de terrain, la révélation d’éléments invisibles à l’œil nu jusqu’à la publication des vues des zones explorées et détruites au courant de la fouille. Au cours de six conférences, des chercheurs et des archéologues témoignent de la pratique photographique sur le terrain et mettent en évidence ce qu’elle apporte à la reconstitution historique.
