Fabulous beasts and where to read them
Animals in Byzantine fables, proverbs, and dreambooks
Studies on animals in the Byzantine world are gaining considerable momentum. An increasing number of scholars are exploring and reconstructing zoobiographies through the lens of Byzantine literature. Yet a significant corpus of texts—often unjustly relegated to the category of minora—remains underexplored, despite teeming with animal life. In fables, popular tales, proverb collections, school manuals, rhetorical treatises, and dreambooks, animals play important roles : they drive narrative plots, embody moral and social agency, and serve as crucial vehicles for cultural meaning.

Alexander Hispanus : nouveaux regards sur Alexandre le Grand dans les cultures ibériques médiévales
Alexandre le Grand est l’une des figures centrales de la culture lettrée médiévale tout autour de la Méditérranée et bien au-delà ; c’est également le cas en péninsule Ibérique, en particulier à partir des XIIe-XIIIe siècles. Les études sur ce sujet ont connu une impulsion fondamentale il y a 25 ans avec la publication, en 1999, de La translation d’Alexandre d’Amaia Arizaleta. Il s’agit par conséquence d’un moment idéal pour faire un bilan sur les fruits portés par l’étude de l’Alexandre ibérique pendant les deux dernières décennies, ainsi que sur le travail qui reste à faire sur ce sujet.

Music in the Middle East after the digital revolution
Journal “Regards”
This issue of the journal Regards (Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth) proposes to investigate the dynamics of musical production and forms of dissemination in the contemporary Near East, particularly through the do it yourself practices that have emerged with the advent of home studios and low-cost listening platforms. The challenge of such a study is thus to confront the different aesthetics of today's music, blending diverse intellectual and cultural heritages, mobilizing the affects of nostalgia and those linked to the historical realities shared by the region's inhabitants. The question of understanding the articulation of musical dynamics with social, political and state boundaries and different contexts of conflict will be explored.

Artistic Creation, Biodiversity and Oceanic Environment (19th-21st Centuries)
This interdisciplinary symposium brings together researchers from the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, as well as artists and museum professionals, to analyze ocean-related art. “The ocean comprises the largest object on our planet” is how literary scholar Steve Mentz describes it, as he works to bring together different forms of knowledge about this elusive entity. Mentz coined the term “blue humanities” to bring together interdisciplinary methodologies that focuses on the ocean. This symposium aims to enrich this field through the arts. Open to the public, it seeks to encourage exchange and discussion.

Cette troisième rencontre des jeunes chercheurs sur l’Italie préromaine a vocation à proposer un espace de réflexion pluridisciplinaire sur les études autour de l’image, quelle que soit sa forme, son contenu, son contexte, sa perception, sa compréhension ou la méthodologie adoptée pour son analyse. Elle vise ainsi à interroger l’image dans sa globalité et sous tous ses aspects, des approches les plus traditionnelles aux plus innovantes et permettra de réfléchir sur les différentes modalités à partir desquelles il est possible de (re)construire une image.

Quand la Baltique rencontre la Méditerranée
Circulation des savoirs autour de la mer Baltique du Moyen Âge au début du XXe siècle
Pour cette cinquième édition, nous avons choisi de faire dialoguer l’aire baltique avec un autre espace maritime et bassin culturel majeur : la Méditerranée. Cette rencontre n’entend pas se limiter à une perspective monodirectionnelle qui irait de la Méditerranée à la Baltique, mais au contraire épouser le flux même de circulations multiples, qui ne cesse de relier les deux mers par mille chemins. Nous souhaitons ainsi questionner les relations entre ces deux espaces maritimes, en mettant en avant les circulations qui les relient : celles des hommes et des femmes, bien sûr, mais également des idées et des objets.

L'iconographie cynégétique dans les mondes anciens
Le colloque Iconographie cynégétique des mondes anciens se tiendra à Paris la semaine du 22 au 26 avril 2024 (jours définitifs annoncés ultérieurement) et vise à rassembler les contributions de chercheurs travaillant spécifiquement sur l’image, ou incluant l’image dans leur travail, et dont le domaine de spécialisation se situe dans l’Antiquité, incluant le pourtour Méditerranéen et l’Asie occidentale. La réflexion menée lors de ce colloque se fera sur les axes de recherche suivant : construire l’iconographie cynégétique ; les images de la chasse : une source historique ; images de la chasse et idéologie du pouvoir ; la chasse et sa mise en scène, des enjeux rituels ; Mythologie et iconographie cynégétique.

Au moyen de onze communications, ce colloque analyse les aspects conceptuels de la relation entre philosophie et rhétorique, de la période classique jusqu’à la fin de l’Antiquité où « philosophe » et « rhéteur » deviennent de véritables professions intellectuelles au langage codifié. On étudiera donc le passage et l’acclimatation des concepts entre philosophie et rhétorique, et vice versa.

L’objectif de ce colloque international est d’approfondir la connaissance des formes prises par la « civilisation du journal » qui s’est développée à partir de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, et jusqu’à la première guerre mondiale, dans les espaces méditerranéens qui, sans avoir été précurseurs, ont aussi connu un grand développement journalistique. L’approche se veut sociale, culturelle et matérielle, dans la lignée d’un renouvellement historiographique récent des études sur la presse, afin de saisir la manière dont les journaux ont été produits et les entreprises de presse gérées, de saisir toutes les formes de circulations et pratiques journalistiques et d’interroger le rapport de ces journaux à l’image.

A Transatlantic Mediterranean?
Circulations, influences and civilian and military cooperation between the United States and Southern European and Turkish spaces (1945-1980's)
The objective of this meeting is to contribute to a transnational and decompartmentalized history of the circulations between Mediterranean Europe and the United States between 1945 and the 1980s, which will make it possible to apprehend these relations from a global point of view and to analyze the way in which these links were able to generate circulations of influence between Mediterranean countries. The aim is to combine diplomatic approaches with the socio-history of these actors and with the analysis of the circulation of knowledge and modes of governmentality, by placing Atlantic military issues and policies in the wider context of intellectual mobility and cross-practices. The European and Turkish Mediterranean is understood here in a broad and political sense, from Portugal to the confines of the Anatolian peninsula. Similarly, the ambition is to see how these relations between Mediterranean Europe and the Atlantic space may have had effects on the Southern and Eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, whether during or after the period of colonial domination.

Lectures fragmentées, écritures fragmentistes
Ce colloque international sur les fragments grecs est consacré aux ressources littéraires qui n’ont pas subsisté intégralement. Bien que nombreuses, ces œuvres fragmentaires sont méconnues du public non spécialiste. Elles seront envisagées dans des perspectives croisées (lectures d'auteurs fragmentés et pratiques d’écriture fragmentistes). L’intérêt sera de renouveler la perception et la valorisation d’un potentiel méconnu et insuffisamment exploité dans le champ de la recherche européenne en sciences de l’Antiquité.

Migration Narratives in the Global Mediterranean (1450–1850)
The H2020 Interconnecting Histories and Archives for Migrant Agency (ITHACA) project focuses on narratives of migration in both past and present, analysing them in a rigorous historical framework, through an interdisciplinary, comparative, and transnational approach. ITHACA aims to create a digital platform, that brings together migration narratives from the XVth century to the present, enhancing the historical documentation and the testimonies of past and present migrants’ experiences. In this context, the ITHACA Project Coordination invites scholars to submit essay proposals for a contributory volume on this topic.

Étude des rapports entre satire et philosophie dans les textes littéraires et philosophiques de l’Antiquité jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle
Ce colloque se propose d’interroger les liens qu’entretient le discours satirique avec le discours philosophique. Les œuvres satiriques développent une critique sociale, politique, religieuse ou intellectuelle qui fait souvent écho au discours philosophique, que cette critique reprenne les positions spécifiques d’une école comme l’épicurisme ou qu’elle relaie une parénèse partagée par plusieurs courants philosophiques. Toutefois l’intention de l’auteur satirique demeure ambigüe : son but excède-t-il celui de susciter le rire aux dépends d’autrui ? Cherche-t-il, comme le philosophe, à convertir son auditoire à une autre vision du monde et à un autre mode de vie ? À l’inverse, la philosophie a pu recourir à des formes d’expression satirique soit littéraires soit simplement verbales. Comment cette forme d’expression satirique s’articule-t-elle avec le discours philosophique ? Voici quelques uns des enjeux que ce colloque veut explorer.

The Invention of Greek origins in the textual and visual cultures of pre-modern Europe (1100-1600)
The ERC Advanced Grant AGRELITA Project studies the Reception of Ancient Greece in pre-modern French Literature and Illustrations of Manuscripts and Printed Books (1320-1550) : How invented memories shaped the identity of European communities. These workshops aim to explore the uses, functions and purposes of the discourses on Greek origins and the polysemy of this concept between 1100 and 1600, in European textual, visual and material cultures, hinging on the following questions : how the authors and artists considered the notion of origin(s)? What both unites and distinguishes it from heritage ? Why Greeks ? Which Greece(s) are thought of as origins ? Whose origins are these ? What modalities of representation and what processes of appropriation appear? For what purposes and for what audiences?

Travelling Matters: rereading, reshaping, reusing objects across the Mediterranean
The workshop “Travelling matters: rereading, reshaping, reusing objects across the Mediterranean” intends to tackle objects as sources and subjects of the history of cross-cultural encounters in innovative ways. We intend to discuss a most diverse array of objects flowing in all directions and to concentrate on the “second-handedness” of displaced objects: how and why moving objects acquire new functions and new meanings, and with what consequences for the relations between the communities involved? These perspectives demand a broad chronology, extending from antiquity to the present-day, and for the intersection between different time frames, from the relatively narrow scale of individual objects being displaced across the Mediterranean to the much larger one of the histories of their reinterpretation and repurposing.
