Communism and Cultural Diplomacy in the Global South (1945–1991 and Beyond)
This workshop challenges traditional East-West Cold War narratives by examining the cultural interactions between communist Europe and the Global South. We will primarily focus on art, culture, and heritage as sources of new insights into historical narratives. We ask the following questions: How can artistic expression contribute to the rethinking of historical narratives? How have political circumstances shaped artistic and cultural production, and vice versa? What were the underlying power dynamics? And what are the contemporary legacies of such interactions?

2025 Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe
The Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe (SISECSE) is a two-week residential workshop, that provides scholars of Eastern Europe time and space to dedicate to their own research and writing in a collaborative and interdisciplinary setting. In addition to conducting their own research, scholars will also have the opportunity to participate in a series of immersive discussions on a broad topic of shared academic interest. In 2025, discussions will explore “Epistemic Mistrust: Authorship, Credibility, and Knowledge Production.” Whether in times of crisis and war, or times of peace and stability, who do we trust to tell the truth? Whose stories do we listen to? With a growing lack of trust in traditional sources of knowledge—including suspicion of academic institutions—public confidence in the value of research is eroding. Nevertheless, humanistic approaches are essential for fostering critical thinking and promoting interdisciplinary dialogue.

Drinking in the Nordic and Germanic Countries
Vice & Virtue Project
As the first part of the international, multi-annual “Vice & Vertu” project, the aim of the “Drinking in the Nordic and Germanic countries” conference is to examine past and present practices of “drinking” and to explore the normative issues involved, from the medieval period to the present day. “Vice et Vertu” (V&V) is a multi-year international research programme supported by the Universities of the Sorbonne, Caen, Turku/TIAS, Umeå and Oslo. The V&V project also aims to integrate young and up-and-coming researchers into Northern European and Francophone research networks through seminars, workshops and colloquia organised at partner universities in France and Northern Europe.

The Belvedere Research Journal is a recently founded international peer-reviewed open access e-journal. It is thematically based on the Belvedere collection and devoted to research in Austrian art history in the broadest historical and geographical sense. We publish work concerned with developments in the former Habsburg Empire and Central Europe broadly defined from the medieval period to the present day.

L’attention aux matérialités donne lieu depuis plusieurs années à des recherches novatrices qu’il sera fructueux de discuter dans une perspective comparatiste. Interroger l’espace de l’Europe médiane à travers cette question est particulièrement heuristique dans la mesure où elle permet d’aborder des phénomènes de longue durée (tels que les utopies et conflits de modernisation, la place des techniques dans les transformations des modes du gouvernement des territoires et des populations) ou contemporains (les transformations sociétales et culturelles postsocialistes et la révolution informatique, les usages de l’internet), tout en questionnant les spécificités de cette aire culturelle et ses relations aux autres parties du monde, à commencer par l’Europe occidentale.

Death and Migration: Perspectives from the Post-Soviet Space
This dossier of Revue européenne des migrations internationales proposes to take up a research theme that has undergone a strong renewal of interest in recent years, that of death and migration. This dossier aims to shed light on an area which has been little studied from this angle (the post-Soviet space) and to develop an approach which focuses on the management of bodies 'dead in the distance' (deaths in migration, deaths due to migration). This dossier also focuses on the effects of a certain proximity to death on the practices of foresight and mutual aid (when they exist) in the migratory context, as well as their impacts on migration as a whole. Two thematic axes will guide the contributions: the first concerns the practical modalities of the management of dead bodies abroad; the second concerns mitigating and solidarity practices in relation to the proximity of death in migration.

Logics, stakes and limits of cultural heritage transmission in Eurasia
The thematic issue is about cultural heritage and patrimonialization. It aims at comparing the varying notions of “tradition” and “safeguarding of culture” within an empirical approach.We focus on conflicts about the creation of culture and how these globalised and specific contexts shape a changing self-perception of “ethnic identity” in Northern Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.The articles may be on local as well as global expressions of cultural heritage: poetical genre, engraving or wood carving, architecture, ethno-parks or ecomuseums, cultural tourism, opposition to projects of valorization, etc. Analysis may also focus on the role of actors involved in local projects, on historical contexts or on international fashions.

Il a vocation à mettre en réseau les chercheurs français en sciences humaines et sociales travaillant sur l’Empire russe, l’URSS et le monde post-soviétique, dispersés sur l’ensemble du territoire, et à soutenir les étudiants et les jeunes docteurs s’engageant dans des travaux sur cette aire. Il souhaite aussi donner de la visibilité aux travaux portant sur cet espace et renforcer le dialogue interdisciplinaire avec les chercheurs français travaillant sur d’autres espaces.

Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

Circulation of Knowledge in the Baltic Sea Region From the Middle Age to the early 20th century
After a first edition around the theme "Education, pedagogy and training" held on March 5, 2020, we are pleased to announce that a second edition of the study day, "Circulation of knowledge around the Baltic Sea Region from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century" will be held. It will be held in Toulouse on Thursday 4 March 2021 and will be based on the theme : "Culture of power, power of culture. "This day is part of a desire to meet around a geographical area, the Baltic Sea Region (Northern Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) in order to exchange between researchers and to highlight their work. It is aimed at both young Masters and more experienced researchers.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era
International PhD Contract 2020-2023
Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

L’objectif de ce cycle de conférences est de croiser les perspectives de différentes disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales sur le cheminement de la Slovaquie au cours de ce dernier siècle. Il s’agit en particulier de montrer en quoi l’expérience slovaque, aux côtés de celles d’autres pays de l’Europe centrale, mais souvent moins connue, enrichit la compréhension de phénomènes qui ont marqué le siècle : déplacements de frontières, disparitions et apparitions d’États, persistance ou disparition de communautés non slaves (Hongrois, Allemands, Juifs, Ukrainiens, Roms, etc.), compétition de modèles de société et circulation d’imaginaires et de styles artistiques. Ces phénomènes se sont accompagnés d’une modernisation accélérée du pays et d’un mouvement inédit dans sa construction en État-nation.

Projections of health and welfare on the socialist and post-socialist screen
Bodies and health on television have not been extensively researched, in particular in the socialist and transition to market-economy contexts.The conference seeks to analyse how television and its evolving formats –contemporary, similar and yet differing in national broadcast contexts– expressed and staged bodies and health from local, regional, national and international perspectives. The conference seeks to better understand the role that TV, as a modern visual mass media, has played in what may be cast as the transition from a national bio-political public health paradigm at the beginning of the twentieth century, to alternative societal forms of the late twentieth century when (supposedly) “better” and “healthier” lives were increasingly shaped by market forces.

Cette année, ce séminaire conçu comme un moment important à la sociabilité des doctorant·e·s du CéSor se composera d’une partie à orientation théorique et d’une autre axée sur la méthodologie. L’axe théorique se penchera principalement sur les questions d’identités dans toutes les orientations et recompositions. La multiplication et le renouvellement incessant des emplois de la notion d'identité n'étant plus à démontrer, le but de ces séances sera de réfléchir d’un point de vue interdisciplinaire aux divers expressions identitaires et aux orientations données aux recherches dans lesquelles entre une telle notion, en multipliant les terrains (terrains ethnographiques, archives ou corpus de sources), les périodes et les aires géographiques.

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

Border Textures: Interwoven Practices and Discursive Fabrics of Borders
2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel
In view of the current political developments in Europe, the scientific study of borders has increasingly gained importance. Cultural Studies has reacted to these developments by generating complex and more and more detailed theories and tools for describing and analyzing border phenomena. Cultural border studies champion approaches which do not examine spatial, material, temporal or cultural aspects in isolation but investigate their intersectional and performative interactions. This panel provides a space for explorative investigation of potential approaches for cultural border studies, focusing on interactions between material and immaterial manifestations of the border.
