Progress and change?

A provisional assessment of Keir Starmer’s Labour government

The General Election of July 4, 2024 delivered a victory for Labour against a deeply divided and power-weary Conservative party whose reputation for reliability and competence had been substantially damaged. Labour’s return to office after fourteen years in opposition is a sufficiently rare occurrence in British electoral history to warrant the use of the adjective historic in relation to the party’s victory. The coincidence of the formation of the Starmer government with the centenary of the election of the first Labour government ever, albeit a minority and short-lived one, is an invitation to look back on the history of Labour in office and implicitly raises the question of its place in the Labour tradition and of its political inheritance.

“Communications” Journal (2028)

The journal Communications is launching a call for papers for a special issue on alternative approaches to artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on peacebuilding and breaking away from the militarization and surveillance logics associated with AI, robotics, and automation. As a dual-use technology with both civilian and military applications, AI is shaped by the military-industrial complex. Contributions will seek to analyze geopolitical, epistemic, and economic power relations, while advancing social justice and sustainability. The call encourages an interdisciplinary approach, including philosophy, sociology, history, STS, anthropology, political science, political economy, and humanities.

In an article that also serves as a statement of position, historian Serge Gruzinski attempts to answer this question: France is a place where it is possible to seek a new conception of the relationship between Europe and America, far from the reductions that certain intellectual traditions—notably American postcolonial studies—have made of Latin America.

Journeying Between Thresholds and Metamorphoses

Journey and journeying shape social practices, forms of knowledge, narrative devices and experiences of the world at large. They can be ordinary yet unsettling processes, thresholds and metamorphoses, movements that open up, dislocate and transform. Crossing different spaces and temporalities introduces discontinuities in ways of perceiving, narrating and thinking. Transformation, however, is not automatic. Journeying may involve waiting, suspension, or blockage, as experienced by migrants or by those living under conditions of forced immobility. Change and the reworking of experience are never linear or immediate. Journeys often produce partial, ambiguous, or reversible transformations, placing identities, interpretive categories and regimes of meaning under tension.

Les chantiers du CIST (collège international des sciences territoriales) explorent d’une manière ou d’une autre les enjeux contemporains des transitions en lien avec les territoires. L’idée est de soutenir diverses initiatives situées à l’amont ou à l’aval du processus de production de la recherche : maturation d’une idée ou d’une intuition, exploration de notions, approches théoriques ou méthodologiques émergentes, mise en réseau ; ou encore valorisation, transfert, éventuellement en lien avec des partenaires non académiques. Ces chantiers peuvent donc prendre différentes formes et correspondre à des activités diverses, s’inspirer d’axes et projets préexistants ou proposer des activités entièrement nouvelles.

Le réseau Arendtien Francophone, créé en 2024, vise à favoriser une synergie entre celles et ceux qui, des amateurs aux chercheuses, fréquentent la pensée de Hannah Arendt. Dans cette optique, nous cherchons à mettre en place un rendez-vous régulier pour en discuter les différents interprétations et aspects. En 2026, nous proposons quatre séances ordinaires du séminaire et une séance spéciale : « Arendt et la science économique », « Arendt et le travail », « Liberté, volonté, politique », « Arendt et la violence », « Philosophie, éducation et politique ».
