  New Articulations of Identity in Contemporary Aesthetics

  Over the last several decades, vibrant conversations have unfolded around existing constructions of identities—often seen as fixed, narrow categories—and a movement toward fluid and intersectional conceptions of the self and community, these discourses having greatly impacted both the theory and practice leading to a radical shift in contemporary aesthetics. Critical debates that destabilize fixed notions of identity have engendered new perspectives, particularly in work critiquing issues of essentialism, heterosexism, monolithic affiliation, and other culturally imposed limitations. This Special Issue seeks to magnify the questions of belongingness raised in contemporary art and generate a multicultural and interdisciplinary discussion that centers around visual practice as a crucial site of social and institutional commentary.

  Empires et religions, XIXe-XXIe siècle

  Journée d’étude de l’Association française d’histoire religieuse contemporaine

  Les empires, de nature fort variée, ont tous été néanmoins confrontés à la diversité religieuse et y ont apporté des réponses différentes, depuis la tentative d’imposition d’un monothéisme religieux (l’empire espagnol) au maintien et à la gestion de cette diversité (dans l’Empire ottoman par exemple). La question de la hiérarchisation des religions par les Européens est ici essentielle, qui établit une échelle de valeur, du paganisme – aussi bien animisme et chamanisme que bouddhisme et culte des ancêtres – aux monothéismes. Face à une impossible synthèse, l’enjeu de la journée d’étude est de proposer plusieurs pistes de réflexion autour de l’axe « empire », dans une période qui va de la fin du XVIII^e siècle au début du XXI^e siècle, permettant ainsi d’entrer en dialogue avec les historiographies de la période moderne ainsi que postcoloniale.

  Judas the Galilean: the Man and his Significance

  In 6 CE, while Quirinius was taking the census of Judea, the first Jewish opposition aroused against Roman presence in the region, led by a man known as Judas the Galilean (or the Gaulanite). According to Josephus, all subsequent troubles were the fact of this man. But who was Judas? Was he so important in the history? Was he even challenging Roman authorities? As usual in similar cases, the scholarly debates are endless about the man and his significance. This conference aims to survey all of the many faces of Judas in recent historiography and to discuss each evidence in order to estimate the true place of Judas in history.

  Santé des corps, salut des âmes : soins et religion en milieu rural

  Europe occidentale, XVe-XIXe siècle

  Depuis quelques années, on assiste à un véritable regain d’intérêt pour l’étude des pratiques dites « populaires » en relation avec la santé ; en parallèle, de nouvelles approches émergent également autour de l’histoire des expériences religieuses. Néanmoins, les démarches qui visent à mettre en lumière le rapport entre ces deux sphères, notamment dans les régions périphériques (rurales et de montagne), demeurent rares. L’objectif de ce colloque est donc d’approfondir la problématique de l’interpénétration entre soins, corps, santé et religion dans le monde rural, en adoptant une approche à la fois interdisciplinaire et dans une perspective de longue durée. Comment revisiter, à l’aune des récents développements de la recherche historique (histoire, histoire des religions, histoire de l’art, anthropologie historique…), des pratiques, des savoirs et des objets qui, jusqu’à présent, ont surtout été abordés par les folkloristes et par les ethnologues ?

  1942, les Églises face à la persécution des Juifs

  Silences, protestations et entraide

  80 ans après la rafle du Vél’ d’Hiv’ et les rafles d’août 1942 en zone non occupée, la Fondation pour la mémoire de la Shoah et le Collège des Bernardins organisent une journée d’étude consacrée aux Églises face à la persécution des Juifs. En partenariat avec la Conférence des évêques de France, la Fédération protestante de France et le Consistoire central, cette rencontre fait intervenir historiens et chercheurs pour éclairer les réactions des institutions et des fidèles chrétiens à l’heure des arrestations et des déportations massives de Juifs durant l’été 1942 en France. Les cas d’autres pays européens seront également évoqués. Une réflexion sur la notion de « Justes » et un moment commémoratif viendront clore cette rencontre.

  En parlant, en écrivant

  Complémentarité, concurrence et hybridation entre écrit et oralité (Europe, XVIe-XVIIe siècles)

  Tandis que les pratiques de l’écrit et de l’oralité ont été remises à l’honneur par de nouvelles approches ces dernières années, les rapports complexes régissant ces deux modalités d’expression et de communication ont été peu thématisés et analysés. Ils soulèvent pourtant des questions fondamentales liées à l’histoire de l’époque moderne et à ses sources. Une attention particulière sera accordée aux phénomènes d’hybridation entre écrit et oralité dans différents domaines et contextes. Les fonctions performatives de la parole (dite ou écrite), jusqu’alors négligées, seront au centre de ces journées d’études. Dans le sillage des débats causés par le linguistic turn, elles permettront de questionner sous un jour nouveau les périmètres mouvants du dicible et de l’indicible, du pensable et de l’impensable, du nommable et l’innommable aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, dans le processus de confessionnalisation comme dans les conflits politiques et géopolitiques qui scandent la première modernité.

  Performance of Medieval Monophony (12th-16th centuries)

  The journal Textus & Musica seeks contributions for a conference and a special issue of the journal, which will address the performance of medieval monophonic or monodic song (liturgical, sacred, or secular). We welcome proposals that treat a wide variety of written and visual representations, from all of Europe and beyond, in the High and Late Middle Ages focussing less on the notated chant itself than on technical, pedagogical, poetic, literary, or artistic descriptions and/or representations of the practice and performance of song for one voice. Visual sources might be artistic, representational, or iconographic, but also architectural or archaeological. Written sources might include musical or textual sources in the official languages of the practiced religions or also in vernacular languages. The multiple disciplinary perspectives should each ground interpretation in concrete historical examples and case studies.

  Regimes of belief, regimes of truth

  The choice of the title "Régimes de croyance, régimes de vérité" (regimes of belief, regimes of truth) meets two requirements. The first is the desire not to restrict the analysis of the non-religious to a study by negation or absence. Whether we speak of agnosticism, atheism, indifference, irreligion or 'nones', the terms used to analyse this phenomenon is too often presented as the negative side of the religious. However, it seems necessary to show its positive components, which is made possible by using the terms 'belief' and 'truth'. The second requirement is to better understand what distinguishes non-religious from religious. The reflections carried out during the seminar which preceded this Conference showed that the boundaries between these two universes of meaning are shifting, and that they share many characteristics. How are regimes of belief and regimes of truth deployed and articulated in a post-secular world?

  Regulars and Nuns at War

  Practices and Experiences (15th-21st c.)

  This conference aims to analyze the individual and collective experiences of members of male and female religious orders facing war and related experiences, as actors and not simply as observers or victims. From the Wars of Religion to the conflicts of the Revolutionary Era, from guerilla warfare to the clashes of massed armies; from armed revolts to attempted ethnic cleansing, we will explore the agency of a specific category that is particularly relevant in Early Modern and Modern Catholicism: male and female members of religious orders, who live in a community by following a rule of life. While sharing at least partially the imaginaries, interpretative frameworks and codes of action of their contemporaries, these women and men experience war with its violence from a situated point of view; that of groups which see themselves as spiritual elites. It is therefore a question of pointing out the practical as well as the symbolic, spiritual, and psychological consequences of this belonging, without forgetting the conflicts of loyalty specific to these actors with multiple identities.

  Innovations, réinventions, ruptures et régulation

  Des communautés dites « nouvelles » occupent aujourd’hui une position centrale au sein du catholicisme dans de nombreux pays. L’objectif de ce colloque est d’interroger à frais nouveau cet objet, par les outils de l’histoire, la sociologie, l’anthropologie ou des sciences politiques, sans restriction d’aire géographique. Les contributions pourront aborder la définition de la catégorie en elle-même, les modalités d’appartenance à l’Église construites et promues par ces communautés, ainsi que leurs relations et leur impact sur le catholicisme « ordinaire ». La question de leur régulation (notamment à travers la thématique des abus) sera également abordée.

  Images are ubiquitous in the world’s religious traditions – even in those traditions in which their creation and veneration have been highly circumscribed or entirely banned. They can serve as objects or expressions of devotion, as pedagogical instruments, as markers of class or status, and as aesthetic productions in their own right. But not all images are held to be equal. In “Miraculous Images in Global Perspective”, we seek to examine in cross-cultural perspective the phenomenon of images that possess supramundane powers or abilities: to perform miracles, emit light, sweat, bleed, move about, heal, protect and at times even to destroy.

  The dead inhabit the world in their own particular ways. In Asia, where life presupposes that physical substance, spirits and the flow of vital energy are united and held together, the moment of death is one of disjunction, even of dispersion. Faced with this phenomenon, numerous techniques as well as objects of various kinds allow the living to cultivate a relationship with the dead. Both anthropologists and historians have described and emphasised how vividly the dead are present among the living. This topic has seen new developments since the beginning of the century. Faced with the profusion of objects and techniques that allow the dead to evolve in the world of the living, this issue of “Lives of the Dead in Asia” intends to reflect on the ways the different vehicles of existence of the dead are produced and used.
