  Andalusi Architecture: Shapes, Meaning and Influences

  “Arts” journal

  The goal of this special issue of Arts is to gather knowledge regarding Andalusi art and inspire readers to learn more about it. Indeed, the importance of Andalusi art in its developmental stage and in the evolution of Hispanic architecture is undeniable. At present, a large group of monuments and archaeological remains continue to remind us of that great period of history in the Iberian Peninsula (from the 8^th to the 15^th century). Accordingly, and in consequence, a few years ago, Arts published a Special Issue titled “Andalusi Architecture: Shapes, Meaning and Influences” to highlight the importance of Andalusi art in the scientific community, and numerous prominent international specialists participated. The importance of this publication lies in the dissemination of artistic elements of Andalusian art, not only during the 8th and 15^th centuries, but also in later centuries as a reminder of their influence.

  L’écrivain genevois Nicolas Bouvier est devenu, en quelques décennies, un auteur de tout premier plan, depuis L’Usage du monde (1963). Ses récits de voyage ont connu une large diffusion grâce à de nombreuses traductions qui n’ont pourtant jamais été recensées ni étudiées de manière détaillée. Ce colloque vise à combler cette lacune, en partant de la réception de Bouvier en Suisse pour voir comment ses textes ont circulé à travers le monde, et quels sont les enjeux de cette réception.

  Deux post-doctorats pour le projet « Urbanisations subalternes dans les montagnes touristique d’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est » (URBALTOUR)

  Two post-doctoral positions for the project "Subaltern Urbanization in the Touristic Mountains of Southern and South-Eastern Asia" (URBALTOUR)

  L’ANR URBALTOUR (Urbanisations subalternes dans les montagnes touristique d’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est) analyse les convergences entre logiques urbaines et touristiques à partir des stations d’altitude fondées à l’époque coloniale en Inde, au Sri Lanka, au Myanmar, au Vietnam, en Indonésie et en Malaisie. Dans le cadre de ce projet sont proposés deux contrats post-doctoraux. Le premier pour une durée de douze mois en études urbaines et/ou touristiques consistera à étudier deux stations d’altitude de l’époque coloniale jusqu’à nos jours dans une perspective à la fois urbaine et touristique en Malaisie (Cameron Highlands) et en Indonésie. Le second, d'une durée de dix-huit mois en histoire coloniale, consistera à travailler, à partir d'archives, à l'étude des stations d’altitude à l’époque coloniale dans une perspective à la fois urbaine et touristique en Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est (Malaisie, Indes orientales néerlandaises, Indochine française, Inde britannique, Ceylan).

  The relevance of Eugen Ehrlich’s thought to empirical methods of law

  The year 2022 marks the centenary of Eugen Ehrlich's death. This great Austro- Hungarian jurist is often presented as the father of legal sociology. As a close observer of legal practices, he was the first to use and invent concepts that have become fundamental in legal sociology today, such as legal pluralism, living law, and legal consciousness. Ehrlich’s research revisits and reverses the illustrious tradition of the Pandects, established and perfected by legal scholars such as Savigny or Puchta. Although Ehrlich has inspired jurists around the world, he remains a little known figure in France. The present symposium is therefore devoted to reconsider the actuality of his thought, using the last chapters of his Grundlegung der Soziologie des Rechts (Foundation of the Sociology of Law) as a main reference. During the first day, specialists will introduce us to the concepts of his methodology of legal sociology and the influence he had on his contemporaries. Once the fundamentals have been established, the second day will highlight the dynamics of Ehrlich's thought for law contemporary research.

  The Mobility of Nomadic and Sedentary Peoples on the Margins of China

  Anthropological and Historical Perspectives

  The aim of this international workshop is to understand how nomadic and sedentary populations are involved together in different types of mobility, thus moving beyond the traditional dichotomy between sedentary/fixed Han Chinese and mobile minority peoples. In combining anthropological and historical approaches, this workshop will probe the evolution, influence, and tensions these various forms of mobility have on Chinese and non-Chinese populations spread across the margins of the Sinitic ecumene. It will furthermore challenge convergent or divergent practices of mobility in imperial and contemporary times by reflecting on the shared insights on mobilities and what these entail in terms of circulation, exchanges, and borrowings.

  In 6 CE, while Quirinius was taking the census of Judea, the first Jewish opposition aroused against Roman presence in the region, led by a man known as Judas the Galilean (or the Gaulanite). According to Josephus, all subsequent troubles were the fact of this man. But who was Judas? Was he so important in the history? Was he even challenging Roman authorities? As usual in similar cases, the scholarly debates are endless about the man and his significance. This conference aims to survey all of the many faces of Judas in recent historiography and to discuss each evidence in order to estimate the true place of Judas in history.

  Circulations des objets et des œuvres asiatiques sur le marché de l’art parisien (1789-1914)

  Tout au long du XIX^e siècle, des objets et des œuvres asiatiques circulent sur le marché parisien. Fraîchement débarqués via les ports principaux de Marseille et Le Havre ou mis en vente après plusieurs générations passées sur la cheminée d’un hôtel particulier, ils sont vendus, échangés, font l’objet de commentaires et d’études et intègrent parfois les musées. Leur diversité est remarquable : porcelaines, estampes, bronzes, étoffes, livres ou gravures du Japon et d’ailleurs, ils ont pu être produits il y a quelques mois ou quelques siècles. Avec pour ambition de dépasser l’approche monographique et l’inventaire des collections développé par le programme de recherche « Collectionneurs, collecteurs et marchands d’art asiatique en France 1700-1939 », la journée sera consacrée au marché de l’art asiatique parisien, abordé sous le prisme de la circulation des objets.

  Des fonctions judiciaires des consuls aux tribunaux consulaires (XIIe-XXe siècle)

  La juridiction contentieuse consulaire est une juridiction spéciale, exercée par des représentants consulaires en matière civile et pénale sur leurs compatriotes à l’étranger. Elle soustrait donc des ressortissants expatriés – ou des autochtones « protégés » – à la justice des pays d’accueil. Cette forme de juridiction émerge dans le sillage du développement des consulats d’outre-mer dans les villes portuaires médiévales. Elle reste pour l'essentiel cantonnée à l'espace méditerranéen durant le Moyen Âge et l’époque moderne, avant de connaître son apogée au cours du XIX^e siècle. À cette époque, elle s’étend à toute une série de pays « semi-colonisés », comme l’Empire ottoman, la Chine, le Japon et le Siam, dans lesquels des tribunaux consulaires européens ou nord-américains rendaient formellement la justice en toute légalité.

Ce cycle pluridisciplinaire, sous format de deux tables-rondes, ambitionne de regrouper sous forme d’un kaléidoscope, les communications de chercheurs d’horizons et de disciplines diversifiés (architecture, urbanisme, conservateur-restaurateur, sociologue, politicien, historien...), autour de la ville de Beyrouth.   Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), a nationwide network of farm cooperatives, is under increasing pressure to expand farmer incomes by adapting coop strategies to changing market incentives. Some coops have adapted more successfully than others. In Betting on the Farm, Patricia L. Maclachlan and Kay Shimizu attribute these differences to three sets of local variables: resource endowments and product-specific market conditions, coop leadership, and the organization of farmer-members behind new coop strategies.

  This conference proposes to explore the polysemy of the imaginary of the animal, especially the wild animal, in Asia and its functions: is it an "alter ego", a protective animal, bringing to humanity its own powers or a radical "alter", which represents a world other than humanity; what are the stakes of these various representations for humanity as well as for the sharing of the planet with the animal world? It seems to us that if man symbolically acquires the power of the animal, it is on the condition that he remains beyond a real or metaphorical man/animal border. Faced with the disappearance of primary spaces and non-modernized populations, the wild animal thus seems the ultimate reservoir of the anti-modern, of what escapes the anthropocene, what is not "for" humanity.

  7th Graduate Student Workshop of Center for Turkish, Ottoman, Balkan, and Central Asian Studies (CETOBaC)

  This day will focus on the issues of production, use, and circulation of primary sources in our research areas. It will allow each participant to present their work, reflect collectively, discuss how we collect, produce, and classify our archives, and deal with their interpretation. It will also question the processes of archiving and the dynamics of conservation, patrimonialization, and destruction of archives as sociopolitical issues. Finally, by taking advantage of the diversity of the cultural areas studied, we will reflect on the transmission and circulation of sources in their temporal and spatial backgrounds.
