  Border Textures: Interwoven Practices and Discursive Fabrics of Borders

  2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel

  In view of the current political developments in Europe, the scientific study of borders has increasingly gained importance. Cultural Studies has reacted to these developments by generating complex and more and more detailed theories and tools for describing and analyzing border phenomena. Cultural border studies champion approaches which do not examine spatial, material, temporal or cultural aspects in isolation but investigate their intersectional and performative interactions. This panel provides a space for explorative investigation of potential approaches for cultural border studies, focusing on interactions between material and immaterial manifestations of the border.

  What is Border Studies?

  2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel

  The societal events of the last decade have challenged Border Studies more than ever before. This can be seen not only in the field’s growing institutionalisation but also in its developments in research: these include the relativization of geopolitical perspectives by cultural studies approaches, the spatialisation of the border concept (e.g. zone, third space, exter/internalisation etc.), the decentralisation of the border in favour of processes (e.g. b/ordering, othering etc.), the pluralisation of the border concept (e.g. walls, differences, (dis)continuities, demarcations) or the complexification of the border (e.g. scapes, textures). The panel is treating these developments and other turns as an opportunity for a long-overdue self-examination, which in the light of the resurgence of borders seems necessary from both a societal and scientific perspective.

  In high medieval Europe, conflict took a number of different forms, from large-scale battles, such as disputes over crowns, power and lands, to more local disputes over inheritance and property. In the absence of well-developed administrative structures which could limit conflict, cultural conventions, rituals and behavioural norms evolved to moderate violence within the elite community.

  Violence toward women in Central and Eastern European countries. Zero tolerance

  Dans un contexte mondial de crise économique et financière, mais aussi politique et idéologique, force est de constater le ralentissement des progrès en faveur de l’égalité femme-homme et des droits fondamentaux des femmes et des filles, et parfois même leur remise en cause. Des avancées importantes ont été réalisées et les filles de même que les femmes accèdent de plus en plus à l’éducation et à l’emploi, aux services de santé et aux espaces de décisions. Pourtant, la majorité des femmes continuent de subir des discriminations dans tous les domaines : économique, politique et social. En dépit de nombreuses avancées juridiques, leurs droits ne sont pas toujours respectés. Les violences faites aux femmes et aux filles sont un fléau intolérable qui continue de toucher une femme sur sept dans le monde.

  Government by Expertise: Technocrats and Technocracy in Western Europe, 1914-1973

  Technocracy is the political swearword of our times. From the multiple crises of the European Union to the recent elections in the United States, the role of experts in public governance is often invoked as one of the main sources for the political ills of contemporary society, responsible for the exacerbation of social inequalities, the decline in the acceptance of political institutions, and the rise of populist movements. This conference will look at the genealogy of technocracy and the trajectories of various groups of “experts” in western Europe’s mid-20^th century.

  Colloque en l'honneur de Laurence Brockliss et Colin Jones

  In 1997, Laurence Brockliss (Magdalen College, Oxford) and Colin Jones (QMUL) published The Medical World of Early Modern France, a landmark in the history of medicine because of its integration of social and institutional history with intellectual history.  It established a vibrant new approach to the history of medicine and knowledge of the early modern period while also encouraging Anglo-French intellectual exchange.  As 2017 is the twentieth anniversary of this work’s publication and the year of Laurence Brockliss’s retirement, colleagues and former pupils have organized a colloquium in their honour.  Scholars from a range of historical disciplines (classical scholarship/antiquarianism, philosophy, and the natural sciences) will discuss the ways in which knowledge is contextualized in early modern Europe and Britain.

  Simon de Montfort († 1218): the crusader, his family and times

  The career of Simon of Montfort encompassed the entirety of Western Europe — as well as the Levantine crusade — at the turn of the thirteenth century.  Born and raised in the orbit of the French royal court at Paris, he inherited and was dispossessed of an English earldom and the royal stewardship.  Moreover, he twice took the cross: first to the Holy Land on the ill-fated Fourth Crusade, where he publicly dissented from the diversion to Constantinople, and later against the heretics in the Midi, where he established a semi-independent crusader principality.

  The development of green, ecological city or Eco-city has been introduced as a mean to support sustainable urban development within a social, economic, environmental and demographic con-text (Tsolakis, Anthopoulos, 2015). The Eco-city concept was introduced by Urban Ecology, a non profit organization that was founded in 1975 by Richard Register (Roseland, 1997). An Eco-city ensures the well-being of its citizens via a holistic urban planning and management approach with the aim of eliminating waste and emissions (Register, 1987). From a systemic point of view, an eco-city can be described like a set of different complex sub-system that need to be associated or reconnected in order to deli-ver the desired outcomes (Diemer, Morales, 2016).

  Deliberative and scriptural practices of urban consultancy in times of crisis (13th-15th century, southern Europe)

  Les assemblées délibératives et conseils urbains médiévaux participent, à partir du XIII^e siècle, à la formidable expansion de la scripturalité de gouvernement. À partir de l’émergence des gouvernements populaires italiens, se systématise l’enregistrement des réunions. Que ce soit sous la forme d’instruments publics ou de registres tenus de façon continue, la mise par écrit de procédures essentiellement orales les formalise et leur donne une validité juridique. Une première journée d’études tenue l’an passé Aix-en-Provence a permis d’identifier les spécificités des registres de délibérations urbains méridionaux. La réflexion portera cette fois-ci sur les tensions et conflits traversant les assemblées délibératives. Pour cela, seront examinées des périodes-clés dans la gestation, l’évolution et la diversification des écritures urbaines.

  Draw me a punk - the punk scene in France (1976-2016)

  Cette quatorzième journée d’étude s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet de recherche PIND (Punk is not dead). Une histoire de la scène punk en France (1976-2016), soutenu par le programme « Intelligence des patrimoines » du Centre d'études supérieures de la Renaissance (CESR), l'UMR « Théorie et histoire des arts et des littératures de la modernité » (THALIM) et l’ANR. Au-delà du fonctionnement anarchique volontiers revendiqué par les musiciens du punk, le mouvement présente des épisodes de cohésion visibles dans la rencontre des codes et des signes, qui recoupent les créations musicales et visuelles. Cette journée d’étude souhaite poser la question de la responsabilité des images et des pratiques esthétiques dans la construction du monde punk qu’elles constituent singulièrement, en pointant les correspondances entre son et image.

  Poetics of (mis)understanding: Culture-making potential of interference in artistic communication

  The conference will take place on December 7-8, 2017 at the Institute of Literary Research (Nowy Świat 72, Pałac Staszica) in Warsaw, Poland. We are interested primarily in exploring the positive aspects of misunderstandings in communication – unlike the approaches that have traditionally emphasized the destabilizing and destructive impact of such interferences. We would like to show the mistakes and misunderstandings in communication as an undervalued source of innovation in culture. We treat misunderstanding and various semantic shifts as mechanisms of intercultural contact that are permanent, inherent, and impossible to eliminate; they are inscribed in the broadly defined translation process.

Feront l’objet d’un intérêt particulier la relation entre minorités et États nationaux, empires et peuples mineurs, mais aussi les minorités juridiques ou celles au sein de la famille. Seront également bienvenus les articles s’intéressant aux courant artistiques ne visant pas tant à s’émanciper dans le passage de la minorité à la majorité, mais à provoquer une rupture avec la norme majoritaire et à affirmer ce « devenir-minoritaire » promu par Deleuze et Guattari dans leur Kafka, pour une littérature mineure.
