  Image, history and memory

  Genealogies of memory in Central and Eastern Europe

  Images as witnesses to history, materialized memories or their active co-creators? The multi-faceted relationship between the past and its visual representations will be the main focus of the 7th edition of the international genealogies of memory conference to be held in Warsaw on 6-8 December. The agenda features inter alia lectures by Ernst van Alphen, Robert Hariman, Constantin Parvulescu and Wojciech Suchocki, as well as Mieke Bal leading the tour of her own video-installations entitled “Dis-Remembered: A Long History of Madness” and “Mis-Remembered: Reasonable Doubt”.

  Altered Trajectories: Socio-economic Impacts and Landscape Changes due to Severe Winters in Historical Times

  International Conference Of Historical Geographers

  This panel - climate history - for 17^th International Conference of Historical Geographers in Warsaw aims to explore rapid and short-term socio-environmental consequences as well as long-term changes induced by adverse effects of extreme cold events (evidence of declining impact or increasing adaptability of societies). Proposed papers can address the social and economic dimensions of cold winter spells and intense frosts but also various environmental aspects related to agriculture, livestock farming, silviculture, forest resources exploitation and management and land-use evolution (without geographical limitation).

  Workshop on Digital Scholarly Editions in East-Central Europe

  The team of New Panorama of Polish Literature (nplp.pl) at the Institute of Literary Research of The Polish Academy of Sciences is organising a two-day workshop focused on digital scholarly editions in broadly conceived East-Central Europe. As the regional contexts have always been important in Digital Humanities, we would like to invite teams from Central, South- and North-East Europe, working in the field of digital scholarly editions to share their experience. A two-day workshop for teams from Central, South- and North-East Europe working in the field of digital scholarly editions to be held on 8-9 November 2017 in Warszawa, Poland.

  Poetics of (mis)understanding: Culture-making potential of interference in artistic communication

  The conference will take place on December 7-8, 2017 at the Institute of Literary Research (Nowy Świat 72, Pałac Staszica) in Warsaw, Poland. We are interested primarily in exploring the positive aspects of misunderstandings in communication – unlike the approaches that have traditionally emphasized the destabilizing and destructive impact of such interferences. We would like to show the mistakes and misunderstandings in communication as an undervalued source of innovation in culture. We treat misunderstanding and various semantic shifts as mechanisms of intercultural contact that are permanent, inherent, and impossible to eliminate; they are inscribed in the broadly defined translation process.

  Against Conventions. Uncommon social roles of women and men from Early Modern Times to 1945

  The organizers propose to use tools which the category of gender gives in humanistic and social studies. However, we would like to overcome present tendencies to separate studies related to women or men. We hope that during the meeting it will be possible to capture mechanisms occurred while undertaking tasks which were contrary to social norms from both “feminine”, and “masculine” perspectives. We are aware that definitely more women  struggled with social boundaries. Nevertheless, we consider the reflection on men’s experience, who also faced such challenges, as equally important.

  The European Network for the Philosophy of the Social Sciences (ENPOSS) invites contributions to its 6^th Conference to be held in Krakow in September of 2017 and organized by the Department of Philosophy of the Cracow University of Economics and the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. Contributions from all areas within the philosophy of the social sciences are encouraged. Moreover, contributions from both philosophers and social scientists are welcome.

  City and the Process of Transition

  From Early Modern Times to the Present

  The Doctoral Adam Galos Circle for the History of the 19^th and the 20^th Centuries invites PhD students and early career scholars to participate in the international conference titled City and the Process of Transition – from Early Modern Times to the Presentto be held at the Historical Institute of the University of Wroclaw, June 8^th – 10^th 2017. The intention of the organizers is to challenge questions concerning the behavior of the city dwellers who faced the lack of stability, resulted primarily from the progressive urbanization and globalization since the early modern era.
