  Withstanding Influence: Academic Independance and its discontents

  L'indépendance scientifique et ses déplaisirs

  This is an international conference that will focus on the possibility and meaning of academic independence today. It will provide an opportunity to revisit the relation between the production of knowledge and the exertion power in all its forms, particularly the subtle forms via which knowledge is recognised as power. In order to stimulate critical debate on the current state of academic independence, the conference will bring together researchers from various sciences that are interested in tensions in the relationship between power and independent knowledge or have been at the origin of such tensions.

  Twentieth-century Dictatorships and Religion

  Topics could include European fascist and non-fascist dictatorships and their relationship to religion, especially to the Vatican, the fate of religion and religious institutions under Communist regimes, the position of Christianity in Maoist China and in Asia, religion and dictatorship in Africa and South America, ... Proposals for contributions on the topics suggested above, or, in general, on topics relating to the theme of ‘dictatorship and religion’, are invited. It is envisaged that a ‘dossier’ of 5 to 10 papers will be published in the Historia Actual Online Autumn 2008 edition.

  National Identification from Below

  Europe from the late 18th century to the end of the First World War

  The last three decades, the discourse, myths, symbols and rites of the most diverse nations and national(ist) movements, have been amply studied. Much of this research, however, is informed by a limited conception of the constructivist paradigm, interpreting national identity as a middle and upper class concern brought to the masses through a whole range of nationalising media (schools, army, press, monarchy, church, etc.) overemphasizing the idea of elite construction ex nihilo (as if dominant groups can randomly choose which myth they want to 'feed' to the masses). This conference wants to study not only the production of national discourse, but also its appropriation by 'ordinary people' and the masses' creativity in forging new national symbols from below. The intended audience includes historians, political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, ethnographers, ...

  Islamic Ethnographies

  Describing Religious Practices in the Muslim World

  Appel à contribution pour un workshop (dont le lieu et la date ne sont pas encore fixés) visant à préparer la rédaction d'un ouvrage collectif sur le thème "Ethnographies islamiques". Il s'agit d'étudir les pratiques religieuses musulmanes par le biais de la méthode ethnographique, c'est-à-dire de la description de données empiriques collectées par le biais de l'observation en contexte. Au-delà de ce socle commun, le projet se veut pluraliste en termes d'approches théoriques, de disciplines et d'objets étudiés. Il n'est donc nullement limité aux anthropologues ni aux pratiques religieuses musulmanes traditionnellement privilégiées par leur discipline (confréries soufies, Islam "populaire", etc...). Des contributions portant sur des questions telles que l'enseignement religieux, les oulémas et intellectuels, les pratiques juridiques, les médias, l'économie ou la politique sont donc les bienvenues.

Ces termes sont apparus au cours des années 1960 dans le champ architectural pour s’imposer dans celui des arts plastiques à la fin des années 1970, sans toujours être rigoureusement définis. Ils demandent par conséquent à être interrogés de façon à comprendre s’ils ont pu ou peuvent être encore pertinents pour décrire certains phénomènes relatifs au champ artistique depuis les années 1960, et ce dans un esprit comparatiste.

  Literature on economic globalisation between 1850 and 1930 focuses primarily on the development of the volume of foreign trade between various nation states. Only rarely was this period examined from the perspective of economic actors below the nation state and by explicitly studying the role of the institutional framework which shaped – and was shaped – by their enterprises. Our conference will address these issues, bringing together scholars from economic and business history, global and world history, and history of law.

  Bourgeois Seas. Revisiting the middle classes of Eastern Mediterranean Port Cities

  Although there has recently been a notable surge of interest in the study of non-European middle classes as well as of Eastern Mediterranean port cities, most historians working on the field of the Eastern Mediterranean rarely treat port cities as sites where classes were formed and contested and where bourgeoisies asserted their class hegemony. This conference aims at bringing these two critical trends together. Following recent historiographical trends proposals are invited on any port city of the Eastern Mediterranean during the long nineteenth century, until about the aftermath of the First World War.

  Appel à contributions pour Géocarrefour - Call for Papers for Geocarrefour

  Nous souhaitons poser dans ce numéro la question de la durabilité de l’agriculture en lien avec celle des territoires ruraux. Les contributions sont attendues autour de trois axes principaux : 1) Comment se crée le consensus autour d’une agriculture durable ? 2) La remise en cause des types et des systèmes de production ; 3) La "vivabilité" de l'activité agricole.Envisager la question de la durabilité de l’agriculture en lien avec les territoires renouvelle la capacité de la géographie rurale à articuler espace, activité et dimension temporelle. Elle est un appel à l’ouverture disciplinaire. Des articles sur la France et l’Europe sont les bienvenus, mais aussi sur les Amériques ou d’autres régions du monde, notamment les pays dits « en voie de développement ».

  Religion in Europe, religion and Europe

  Recent debates have focused on the institutional issues raised by the relations between religion and European integration, such as the Churches’ participation in EU governance, references to the Christian heritage of Europe in the preamble of the Constitutional treaty, or the revival of denominational powers within national arenas. Meanwhile, belief is nowadays developing in Europe essentially through individualized and deregulated forms which are no longer under the control and the mediation of organized political and spiritual institutions. This workshop aims to analyse both institutional and non-institutional religious phenomena in their interaction with the Europeanization process experienced by State members.
