  Digital Humanities Summer School 2013

  This first edition of the DH Summer school Switzerland will take place in Bern, 26-29 June 2013. The DH Summer school is organized in three types of modules: courses, workshops, and unconference. In addition, there will be a participant project slam, a social evening and an optional excursion. Each course is 90 minutes long and is completed by a hands-on training workshop or tutorial of 90 min. Course Lecturers are senior scholars of their respective domain. In addition to the plenary courses, the Summer School offers a selection of 90 min. workshops on various DH topics and tools. Those workshop will take place in parallel sessions.

  From annotation to interphonologies

  The PAC Project “La Phonologie de l’Anglais Contemporain : usages, variétés et structure ; The Phonology of Contemporary English: usage, varieties and structure” is coordinated by Anne Przewozny, Philip Carr and Jacques Durand. Among other things it aims at: giving a better picture of spoken English in its unity and diversity (geographical, social and stylistic); testing phonological and phonetic models from a synchronic and diachronic point of view, making room for the systematic study of variation; favouring communication between specialists in speech and in phonological theory; providing data and analyses which will help improve the teaching of English as a foreign language.

  Women and sport in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

  Women's access to sports and physical education is a story made by advances and retreats, punctuated by discrimination, mentalities’ shifts and social achievements. In fact, by the end of 1800, women's participation in sporting events was only looked upon as entertainment, giving particular attention to body and facial postures, and to feminine beauty, setting physical strength, agility and skill of the athletes as second level of importance. The Summer Olympics are a clear illustration of this historical path. The "Women and Sport in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries" conference, organized by the Institute of Contemporary History (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences - Nova University of Lisbon), seeks to analyze, in a critical and integrated way, the history of this journey, watching its multiple dimensions and approaches: social, economic, political, cultural, legal, ethical, organizational, media, medical and gender. This meeting aims to provide a space of discussion, seeking to stimulate and further develop studies in the History of Sports, particularly in the field of History of Women’s Sports.

  Inter-Asian Connections (2013)

  To be held in Istanbul and hosted by Koç University, the conference will host seven concurrent workshops led by two or three directors and showcasing innovative research from across the social sciences and related disciplines. Workshops will focus on themes of particular relevance to Asia, reconceptualized as a dynamic and interconnected historical, geographical, and cultural formation stretching from the Middle East through Eurasia and South Asia, to East Asia. The conference structure and schedule have been designed to enable intensive "working group" interactions on a specific research theme, as well as broader interactions on topics of mutual interest and concern. Accordingly, there will be a public keynote and plenary sessions in addition to closed workshop sessions.

  Resisting War in the 20th Century

  This congress intends to promote debate about the multiple kinds of resistance to war as well as explore the different academic approaches taken to studying it, especially but not exclusively in history, anthropology, sociology and political science as well as literary, cultural, artistic, subaltern and gender studies. We call for empirical, theoretical or methodological papers that discuss the issue of resistance to war in the twentieth century in its multiple performances and visions, in different observation scales. We hope to see studies highlighting different actors, institutions, practices and speeches and also hegemonic or counter-hegemonic collective representations.

  The Nomadism of Social Anthropologists

  CFP Midterm Conference of the Europeanist Network of the European Association of Social Anthropologists

  While anthropologists of the past decades have devoted increasing attention both to questions of reflexivity and to people “on the move” such as migrants, relatively little attention has focused on the geographical and cultural movement of social anthropologists themselves, especially since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Even if there is growing interest in non-hegemonic anthropologies by scholars who have often lived in several countries  and recent work on “the ethnographic self as resource” argues that anthropologists’ personal experiences provide potentially insightful ethnographic data that can enrich their scientific analysis, the consequences of past and present anthropologists’ nomadism on their own research – including their training, career and grant opportunities – have not been thoroughly analysed. It is common knowledge that today, in Europe and beyond, being “on the move” has increasingly become a part of many anthropologists’ lives.

Directly or indirectly Alberti’s ideas and attitude crossed the last five centuries transforming the architectural theory and practice. The question now is how and where. Digital Alberti International Conference will be held in Coimbra in parallel with the 2nd International Congress “The foundations of modern rationalities: around Alberti and hmanism” and the exhibition “Digital Alberti: Tradition and innovation in the architectural theory and practice in Portugal” that presents the results of the research project with the same title.

  Music, poetry and the brain

  It is indisputable that, with his operas, Wagner introduced profound new insights relating music, language (poetry) and emotion. It is widely consensual that with his dramas, Wagner intended to explore human mind and behaviour with the power of music. In fact, never before was music so systematically used as a tool for describing and interpreting facts, events, beliefs, desires, intentions, memories and emotions. In the last decades, there has been much advance in the understanding of the cerebral basis of music and its relationships with brain mechanisms of language, cognition and emotion. In short, music has also been shown to be a powerful pathway to understand human mind and behaviour with the modern tools of neuroscience. Therefore, Wagner’s bicentennial could be an excellent opportunity for a meeting, summarizing the recent advances of brain research on these themes.

The conference's objective is to provide a platform for educational researchers to present their perspectives on the current state of research studies in graduate programs in education and to raise questions regarding the quality of these studies. Papers presented will be subject to peer review process to be eligible for publication in the refereed conference proceedings. We hope that this conference will help capture the current practices in MA and PHD programs in education in the Arab countries, and will allow for a rich professional dialogue among its participants toward developing ideas and recommendations for improving these programs as well as the quality of their graduates and the studies they produce.

Annual conference of the Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Sciences, September 5 – 7, 2013, Bern, Switzerland. The conference would like to address the issue from various perspectives and ask e.g. the following questions: To which levels of medical knowledge and activity (skill, professional knowledge, experience, relationship with patients) did and does the claim of expertise refer to? Which strategies, rhetorics and kinds of self-fashioning were and are used in order to achieve, retain or reject the status of expertise? Which was and is the relationship between expertise, profession(nalism), institutionalization and specialization? In what respect is there a difference between a physician's claim of expertise and that of other health professionals?
