  Day 1, engravings in colour post 1945 - Day 2: Dying, art and industry from 1940 to the present day

  Si la reproduction industrielle et la diffusion massive des images en couleurs qui se sont accélérées de façon vertigineuse depuis un demi-siècle, ont profondément changé notre paysage visuel ainsi que notre rapport à l'œuvre d'art, les techniques qui les permettent semblent néanmoins encore très imparfaites ; la couleur, ce phénomène instable et insaisissable entre tous, reste aujourd'hui encore un réel défi. Plusieurs journées d'études se propose d'interroger la place de la couleur dans une création contemporaine fortement marquée par les question liées au multiple. La réflexion s'attachera autant aux oeuvres multiples par nature, comme l'estampe, la photographie, le cinéma, qu'à la production et à la diffusion photographique et/ou numérique d'œuvres « uniques » ou encore, au design, aux arts appliquées et à la production industrielle d'objets.

  The conference “Order into Action” asks if political, geographical or religious large-scale concepts constituted the basic elements of systems of world order and how those concepts were translated into concrete actions or practices. In order to include a comparative view on regions and cultures, the confereince combines the perspectives of scholars in European, Arabic and Islamic and Asian Studies, as well as outlooks on premodern societies in (sub-saharan) Africa, the Americas and Australia.

  Henri Dutilleux and the arts

  Painting, photography, literature, cinema… Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) called them his “stimuli”. The conference will focus on the transdisciplinary nature of his work, nourished by every single art and regularly crossing the formal boundaries by addressing the radio, the theatre, the ballet, etc. This conference is part of Henri Dutilleux Centenary, a national commemoration placed under the patronage of the Minister of Culture and Communication, Ms. Audrey Azoulay, and the Mayor of Paris, Ms. Anne Hidalgo, and coordinated by the Cité de la musique-Philharmonie de Paris.

  Multiculturalism, interculturality, complex identities: the example of Caucasia

  The aim of the symposium is to highlight the treasures of an area that is culturally and historically a kind of multicultural island: the Caucasus. Nizami Ganjavi, for example, is a poet of multiculturalism, and he owes his fame both to his lyricism and to his ethics of peaceful coexistence. The Book of Dede Korkut is another interesting example: it is the result of a meeting of cultures, and it inspired many multicultural artists (poets, dramatists, film-makers). Caucasian multiculturalism is indeed still alive (among the numerous works inspired by the Oghuz epic, one can think of Nabi Hazri’s Dreams and legends, of Altaï Mamedov’s Deli Domrul or of Anar’s Dede Gorgut). The symposium will focus on the relationship between multiculturalism, interculturality and intermediality, as well as on the role of multiculturalism in the field of pedagogy.

  The US network The CW celebrates its ten-year anniversary this year. As the product of a merger between previous networks The WB and UPN, the small network has distinguished itself over its ten-year tenure with policies that are unique in the American television landscape. The diversity and originality of its programming have attracted an audience that is perhaps smaller than those garnered by the larger networks, but which has proven itself fiercely loyal to the channel. This day-long seminar therefore seeks to examine The CW’s fictions, but also, from a more global perspective, the channel itself. A case study of The CW will allow us to analyze these little-studied series but also to blend approaches to better understand this type of fiction.

  Appropriation(s) / Re-appropriation(s) of culture in colonial and post-colonial situations (1930 - 2016)

  L’histoire de la colonisation est parsemée de manifestations culturelles glorifiant l’hégémonie française. L’exposition coloniale de 1931 est, de ce point de vue, édifiante. Bien au-delà de ces expositions d’envergures, la situation coloniale a conditionné le développement des arts, du cinéma, de l’architecture mais aussi de l’enseignement. Dès 1951, Georges Balandier qualifiait la colonisation de « fait social total » et la culture, dans son sens le plus large, érigée en moyen de domination ultime, en fut l’un des chaînons. Cette série de séminaires aura, dès lors, pour objectif d’interroger, par des discussions thématiques – les festivals, le cinéma, la photographie, l’architecture et l’enseignement seront abordés - et en réunissant des chercheurs, doctorants, docteurs et artistes de divers horizons disciplinaires, la relation complexe et cruciale entre culture et colonisation.

  The global upheaval caused by the protest movements around ‘68 revolutionised social structures, overturned cultural conventions, challenged political ideologies, and catalysed civil rights activism by women, gay people and ethnic minorities. Childhood historians stress the importance of this period in altering the authority structures that shaped children’s lives. This special issue proposes to analyse ‘68 as a watershed moment in children’s culture and its related disciplines, following Marwick’s (1998) now canonical definition of ‘68 as the crystallisation of the cultural revolution of the ‘long sixties’ (c.1958-c.1974).
