Au-delà d’une simple présentation, il s’agit donc, de la part de ou des auteurs, de partager les réflexions engendrées par le volume, de faire état d’une pensée, d’une méthodologie ou d’une doctrine et de favoriser les débats sur le fondement d’un dialogue ; dialogue qui, on l’aura compris, n’est ni didactique, ni polémique mais dialectique.

  The making of Muslim chaplaincies in prisons

  Comparative approaches

  In France, prison chaplain activities are currently under hitherto unforeseen scrutiny in the scope of public action and academic fields. This renewed interest in an institution that seemed to be on the verge of falling into disuse little more than two decades ago in France, can be explained by the upheaval that the religious profile of inmates has undergone in the past three or four decades. Moreover Muslim chaplains have been seen as a policy tool for preventing radicalisation.In a context where there is widespread interest in the role chaplains could play in the fight against the swing to violent extremism, this symposium will seek to review the way in which Muslim actors in France and in other countries have made use of this institution even though it does not belong to their own religious tradition.

  An element that seems to characterize the 20^th century reflection on utopia is its secular nature. Through a re-thinking of the place and roles of religion in society, the post-secular turn we are witnessing in recent theory (Habermas, Taylor, Asad, Mahmood) may provide a critical point of departure for questioning this specific aspect of utopian tradition. In this panel, we invite papers that reflect on the relationship between utopia and religion, as it is worked out in 20^th century literature and philosophy: How does the place of the utopian tradition change in the context of the “return of the religion” in a post-secular society?

  À soixante-dix ans de la fin du second conflit mondial, nous pouvons toujours apprécier en Italie l’abondance d’une production artistique multiforme qui ne cesse d’évoquer, d’explorer et de réélaborer le souvenir de la dictature italienne. Cette multiplicité des expressions mémorielles se situe non seulement dans la pluralité de leurs supports visuels mais aussi dans la source même de ces souvenirs. c’est à la lumière de cette évolution historique, historiographique et générationnelle que nous souhaitons interroger le réservoir d’images, de paroles et de gestes mobilisé par les artistes depuis 1945. Comment ces mémoires, directes ou indirectes, se déclinent-elles au cinéma, dans les arts plastiques, au théâtre ? Quels usages et quels objectifs mémoriels visent-elles ?

  The function of commentary

  La thématique est centrée sur la « fonction commentative » afin de délimiter le concept et le rôle du « commentaire » et d'intégrer un ensemble de réflexions autour de différents domaines linguistiques auxquels s'applique la notion de « commentaire / commenter ». Dans la tradition médiévale, le commentaire participait d'une activité, souvent institutionnalisée, visant à l'appropriation d'un texte. Il pouvait s'agir d'un texte plus ancien, notamment celui de philosophes de l'Antiquité, ou d'un texte contemporain, la réflexion s'inscrivant dans le cadre plus large de l'établissement d'un savoir. Qu'il s'agisse de gloses ou de l'établissement d'un nouveau texte, le commentaire soulevait les enjeux fondamentaux liés à la fidélité au sens, à la lettre ou à l'intention de l'auteur.

  Glass in Western Europe AD 700-1600

  8th International Congress of the French Association for the Archaeology of Glass

  Archaeologists, historians, archaeometrists, restorers, glass professionals and enthusiasts will gather around a common topic: “Glass from the eighth to the sixteenth century in Western Europe”. During the 1980-1990’s, medieval glass was highlighted in history and archaeology but, one must recognize that since then, no significant state-of-the-art overview has been published. The increasing number of rescue and systematic excavations on medieval sites, along with the democratization of new conservation methods has allowed a considerable improvement and renewal of this thematic. If complete thoroughness is out of reach, then this congress intends to achieve an updated state of research. For this purpose, original works and thematic overviews, whether chronological or geographical, are expected on the subject of production, distribution and uses of medieval glass in Western Europe.

  The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium

  Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du I^er millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

How have British artists responded to these shifting perceptions of the world around them, of this great swirling circle of life and non life in which they found – or imagined – themselves diversely positioned, for a long time at the centre, then in a more undefined place – at the margin even? How has art itself positioned itself in this newly defined environment?
