Não são impostos limites fronteiriços: entende-se por mundo português o mundo de língua portuguesa na Europa, Américas, África e Ásia/Oceânia, nos quais se constituíram, naquela época, agremiações científicas da mais variada natureza e objecto de estudo, dotadas de estatutos próprios e de publicações, individuais e colectivas, manuscritas ou impressas.

  An element that seems to characterize the 20^th century reflection on utopia is its secular nature. Through a re-thinking of the place and roles of religion in society, the post-secular turn we are witnessing in recent theory (Habermas, Taylor, Asad, Mahmood) may provide a critical point of departure for questioning this specific aspect of utopian tradition. In this panel, we invite papers that reflect on the relationship between utopia and religion, as it is worked out in 20^th century literature and philosophy: How does the place of the utopian tradition change in the context of the “return of the religion” in a post-secular society?

  Glass in Western Europe AD 700-1600

  8th International Congress of the French Association for the Archaeology of Glass

  Archaeologists, historians, archaeometrists, restorers, glass professionals and enthusiasts will gather around a common topic: “Glass from the eighth to the sixteenth century in Western Europe”. During the 1980-1990’s, medieval glass was highlighted in history and archaeology but, one must recognize that since then, no significant state-of-the-art overview has been published. The increasing number of rescue and systematic excavations on medieval sites, along with the democratization of new conservation methods has allowed a considerable improvement and renewal of this thematic. If complete thoroughness is out of reach, then this congress intends to achieve an updated state of research. For this purpose, original works and thematic overviews, whether chronological or geographical, are expected on the subject of production, distribution and uses of medieval glass in Western Europe.

  Ships of the desert

  The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium

  Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du I^er millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

  The peace of Fexhe (1316) and revolts in Liège and western Europe

  Des chercheurs liégeois, belges, français, allemand et canadien permettront d’affiner nos connaissances de ce texte majeur de notre histoire. La paix de Fexhe apparaîtra aussi comme un élément d’un mouvement plus vaste, celui des contestations politiques et sociales et du mouvement représentatif au début du XIV^e siècle. On comprendra donc mieux le but de ces conflagrations et des textes qui en furent le produit. Seront également interrogés les réseaux structurant les différents partis en présence, la formation intellectuelle des élites laïques comme ecclésiastiques, le rapport au pouvoir et au seigneur, voire au souverain. Les prolongements de cet événement majeur sur le plan de la mémoire et de l’histoire du droit jusqu’à notre époque seront également évoqués.

  The Price of Peace: Modernising the Ancien Régime?

  Europe 1815-1848

  In many historiographic traditions, the so-called "Restoration" has been depicted as an awkward interval between the Napoleonic Wars and the age of nationalism. This international conference has the ambition of breaking down old myths and stereotypes about the ‘Restoration’ in order to think more broadly and openly about the key transitions and issues. The conference will revolve around the provocative historiographical issue of whether the post-Napoleonic order represented an attempt to reconcile the heritage of the Ancien Régime with a deeply transformed world. Topics explored by panels of invited experts from across Europe will include Rethinking the "Restoration", New departures in international relations, Constitutions vs. Charters, Rebirth of composite monarchies, Before and Beyond the Nation, Historicising the Ancien Régime?, New borders and old identities.

  The new avatars of the detective novel - collective work

  « Mais où va donc le roman policier ? » s’interrogent beaucoup de critiques dont quelques-uns ont fini par succomber à l’idée que la mort du genre est inéluctable. « Il ne va nulle part, rétorque ironiquement le tandem Boileau-Narcejac. C’est un pommier qui donne différentes variétés de fruits, mais ce sont toujours des pommes. L’erreur, précisément, est de vouloir modifier son essence par des greffes qu’il supporte toujours mal ». Depuis les années soixante-dix du siècle écoulé, et devant l’évolution rapide du roman policier, la multiplication de ses branches (roman de suspense, roman noir, néopolar, roman d’espionnage, polar humoristique, polar historique, polar mythique, etc.) et l’apparition de nouvelles formes romanesques mi-littéraires, mi-policières, les théoriciens commencent cependant à s’interroger sur l’avenir de la littérature noire et les risques qu’elle court si elle poursuit ses « mues » successives. Le présent projet d'ouvrage collectif invite les universitaires et les jeunes chercheurs à réfléchir sur les nouveaux avatars du roman policier en étudiant par exemple les enjeux de l’écriture policière subversive et les principales stratégies de détournement, la réception des romans policiers hybrides, le coefficient du style « littéraire » dans le polar, et les nouvelles approches théoriques et méthodologiques pour aborder les avatars contemporains du roman policier.

  Religions and the presidential elections in the United States

  Catholics have long been an important force in American electoral politics even if they make up 21% of the American population. Could they be, compared to the other religious denominations, the game changer of the next elections ? Despite widespread agreement among scholars that the partisan behavior of Catholics has changed, there is much less consensus on the nature of that change, its permanence, and its causes. This symposium will review the historical patterns of Catholic partisanship and voting behavior, as well as those of the other denominations, discuss major perspectives on electoral change (Republican shift, Hispanic and Asian vote, interreligious alliances) and test there perspectives with the latest survey data.
