  On croit souvent que la spiritualité ou du moins son expression publique et ses formes les plus flamboyantes sont l’apanage des hommes, de ces grands maîtres reconnus qui ont eu, littéralement et métaphoriquement, « voix au chapitre ». Bien des figures de femmes pourtant, prouvent le contraire : contemplatives ou engagées dans le monde, visionnaires, artistes, scientifiques ou philosophes, appartenant à des cultures religieuses variées, elles ont eu des destins spirituels hors du commun, elles ont traversé le monde et le temps dans une quête de l’absolu qui exigeait d’elles de tout donner, de tout brûler parfois et de se consumer. Leur vie a pris sens dans ce don de soi qui pouvait prendre des formes variées mais qui toujours était tendu vers un au-delà d’elles-mêmes.

  Formulas in Medieval Culture

  The fourth bi-annual conference on Formulas in Medieval Culture (initiated by the research groups GRENDEL and IDEA, based at the University of Lorraine, France) will be held on the 13th, 14th and 15th of June 2018 at the Centre d'Etudes Supérieures de Civilisation Médiévale (CESCM) at the University of Poitiers. In the Middle Ages, modes of thought and representation involving repetition and regularity, which were expected and easily identifiable, were sources of rich tensions between individual expression and collective norms, between change and continuity, between creation and convention.

  Palfreys and rounceys, hackneys and packhorses, warhorses and coursers, not to mention the mysterious “dung mare” – they were all part of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Every cleric and monk, no matter how immersed in his devotional routine and books he would be, every nun, no matter how reclusive her life, every peasant, no matter how poor his household, would have some experience of horses. To the medieval people, horses were as habitual as cars in the modern times. Besides, there was the daily co-existence with horses to which many representatives of the gentry and nobility – both male and female – were exposed, which far exceeds the experience of most amateur riders today.

  Strangers at home. Civilizing immigrants between inclusion and exclusion in ancient Thebes

  La religion et le mythe en Grèce ancienne ont eu des fonctions historiques et ont été si étroitement reliés à la vie sociale et politique qu’ils ont eu des interactions constantes avec les contextes politiques. Pour cette raison, ils doivent être analysés d’un point de vue grec, qui prenne en considération leurs arrière-plans historique et archéologique. Les mythes étaient considérés comme une narration du passé et les anciens, loin de les considérer comme un corpus stérile de légendes, les voyaient comme un tissu conjonctif de leur société. En particulier, les mythes sur les origines des communautés urbaines comme Thèbes sont intimement associés aux changements sociaux, car ils ont contribué à la définition des lieux où ils se déroulent, et à la construction d’identités culturelles et nationales.

  Grasping and managing fear - the anthropology of fear in Ancient Greece in the Christian age

  Depuis une trentaine d’années, les études sur les émotions constituent un courant important de la recherche historique en général et helléniste en particulier. Les travaux d’Angelos Chaniotis et de David Konstan ont marqué cette tendance, et de nombreux ouvrages sur les émotions en général ou sur des émotions particulières comme aidôs (D. Cairns) ou la colère (Ed. Harris) ont vu le jour. Nous avons choisi d’approfondir une émotion fondamentale, la peur. Outre sa qua­lité de moteur péda­go­gique capital pour la petite enfance, la peur, sous ses différentes formes, combinée à des émotions annexes comme l’angoisse ou la stupeur, accompagne toutes les manifestations de la vie humaine.

Historians, diplomats, economists, law students, political scientists and sociologists have all contributed to our understanding of the space age and its impact on our societies over the past decades. Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.

  Die Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW) ist eine Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts mit Sitz in Berlin. Ihr wissenschaftliches Profil ist vor allem geprägt durch langfristig orientierte Grundlagenforschung der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften. Die Akademie beschäftigt etwa 350 Mitarbeiter/innen, ihr Jahresbudget beträgt rund 20 Mio. Euro. Die Akademie sucht für das Akademienvorhaben „Alexander von Humboldt auf Reisen – Wissenschaft aus der Bewegung (AvH-R)“ zum 1. Oktober 2017 eine/n wissenschaftliche/n Mitarbeiter/in mit 80% der tariflichen Regelarbeitszeit, zunächst befristet für zwei Jahre.

  In 1989, a survey of French cultural taste revealed that Serge Gainsbourg was both one of the most popular singers and yet a near outcast in his native country. When he died, two years later, President Mitterrand called him “our Baudelaire, our Apollinaire,” claiming he had “elevated chanson to the level of art.” But he might just as well have acknowledged Gainsbourg as the first artist to top the British charts with a single in a foreign language. With the hindsight of almost thirty years, one thing is, in any case, certain: sampled by Beck, De La Soul, Massive Attack and Fatboy Slim, remixed by Howie B. and David Holmes, translated by Mick Harvey and covered by Iggy Pop, Donna Summer, Portishead, Madeleine Peyroux, the Pet Shop Boys and Franz Ferdinand, “the man with the cabbage head” remains the Francophone songwriter whose contribution to the international appeal of French popular music has been the most significant in the post-war era.

  La quatrième et dernière journée d’études de notre cycle « femmes déviantes, femmes criminelles » s’organise autour du thème « Justice et société face aux femmes hérétiques et blasphématrices ». Elle envisage l’étude des comportements mais aussi des répercussions sur l’environnement social et familial. Les périodes de tensions confessionnelles témoignent de climats particuliers mais permettent des questionnements nombreux et précis, tant du point de vue de l’autorité (judiciaire, politique...) que des déviantes.

  Generations of scholars have studied the multi-faceted experiences of the Franciscans in Mexico and the ways in which the Franciscan order shaped New Spain and the early Mexican republic. This conference examines the range of Franciscan influence and analyzes new scholarship that focuses on the multiple discourses with which friars engaged native peoples, creole populations, the vice-regal authorities, and other actors throughout the Spanish empire.  The conference brings together junior and senior scholars to study the long Franciscan experience in Mexico on the eve of the commemoration of the quincentenary of the Spanish — and thus the Franciscan— presence in Mexico.

  Warfare, distance and “civilizing process”

  Cette session – simple ou double selon l'affluence et la qualité des abstracts proposés – invite des socio-historiens, sociologues ou historiens qui interrogent les pratiques guerrières en termes proxémiques et de transformation du rapport au corps à présenter l'état de leurs réflexions et recherches théorico-empiriques. Les abstracts peuvent porter sur des cas d'étude issus de l'époque médiévale jusqu'au siècle passé, véritable laboratoire de violences de masse, de même qu'elles peuvent bien sûr avoir trait aux guerres ayant cours aujourd'hui. La session aura lieu dans le cadre du prochain congrès mondial de sociologie qui se déroulera à Toronto du 15 au 21 juillet 2018 et est organisée par le comité de recherche RC56 (Historical Sociology), notamment lié à la fondation Norbert Elias.

  2017 marque le cent cinquantenaire de la mort de Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) et le cent soixantième anniversaire de la publication – et de la condamnation – des Fleurs du mal (1857). On souhaiterait, à cette occasion, s’interroger sur la pensée de Baudelaire, non seulement dans les domaines poétique et esthétique, mais aussi dans les champs socio-politique, éthique, anthropologique et religieux. L’ensemble de sa production mérite ici analyse : sa poésie, en vers et en prose, sa critique littéraire, sa critique d’art, ses traductions, sa correspondance, Mon Cœur mis à nu, Fusées et le reste de ses textes, projets inachevés compris.

  Apprenticeship and artistic creation - places, communities, networks and ancestral traditions

  Lieux, communautés, réseaux, transmission familiale

  Depuis deux ans, l’équipe de l’axe « Arts et mémoires d’Europe » du laboratoire IRHiS (Institut de recherches historiques du Septentrion) de l’université de Lille organise un séminaire mensuel consacré au thème « Apprentissage, travail et création ». Conçu selon la modalité d’un workshop, avec un temps de parole très large accordé à l’échange entre collègues mais aussi avec le public étudiant, ces ateliers ont accueilli des spécialistes provenant de la France entière. Nous souhaitons à présent organiser deux journées d’étude consacrées au thème de l’apprentissage artistique en Europe, de l’antiquité à l’époque contemporaine, pour explorer plus particulièrement les notions de « lieu », « communauté », « réseau » et « transmission familiale ».
