  Land-Plot Mapping in Early Modern Rural Societies (Europe, Americas, Asia): from Production to Uses

  Despite their richness, these sources are still considered as secondary documents, dependent on a written corpus which could provide, alone, the legitimate subject of a historical study. Nevertheless the identification, digitization and online publishing of old maps have accelerated and keep busy archivists, curators, archaeologists and researchers. But the same can’t be said of their historical analysis, despite the work done by rural historians and historians of cartography. This conference will bring together researchers with a thorough knowledge of a large corpus of maps. The purpose of the conference is the preparation of a synthetic publication on the subject – which won’t be limited to the proceedings of the conference.

  Longtemps associé dans l’historiographie à la seule question des grains, le terme « disette » apparaît doté d’un champ d’application beaucoup plus vaste dans les sources de l’Ancien Régime et de la période postrévolutionnaire. Il s’étend en effet bien au-delà du seul domaine frumentaire, ou même alimentaire, pour englober une large gamme de situations caractérisées par la rareté momentanée, ou la raréfaction en cours, d’une « ressource » – qu’il s’agisse de matières premières d’origine naturelle (« disette de bois », « disette d’or », « disette d’eau », « disette de gibier », « disette de poisson », etc.), de produits agricoles et manufacturés (« disette de fourrage », « disette d’engrais », « disette de laine », « disette de monnaie », etc.) ou encore de catégories de la population (« disette d’ouvriers », « disette de marins », « disette de nourrices », « disettes de prêtres », etc.).

  Fresh perspectives on heritage appropriation in Europe during the French Revolution

  Régulièrement réapparaît çà et là une remise en question des notions de sécularisation et de décontextualisation des œuvres d’art qui ont présidé à la création, dans la seconde moitié du XVIII^e siècle, des musées modernes. Cette remise en cause conduit à considérer, dans la foulée de Quatremère de Quincy, que l’œuvre d’art ne peut être appréciée que dans son contexte d’origine. Dans la foulée de l’inventaire scientifique que dresse l’IRPA des peintures et des sculptures spoliées par les révolutionnaires français dans les Pays-Bas autrichiens et la principauté épiscopale de Liège, un colloque de deux jours est organisé pour réévaluer de la manière la plus large les circonstances historiques, politiques et artistiques de ces prélèvements révolutionnaires à travers l’Europe, ainsi que leurs antécédents et répercussions immédiats. La thématique est élargie à l’ensemble du patrimoine culturel concerné, et non pas seulement aux œuvres d’art.

  Insularities and enclaves in colonial and post-colonial circumstances

  Crossings, conflicts and identitarian constructions (15th - 21st centuries)

  Historically, archipelagos were considered as rehearsal spaces for new social constructions. Since colonization and, afterwards, colonialism and imperialism, many of them evolved in association with the strengthening of international networks, while others did not escape isolation and forced unequal integration in different spaces. On the other hand, enclaves were the outcome of historical circumstances, often externally decided, which prompted some degree of insularity regarding the immediate geographical surroundings. When those territories did not become independent, there were demands for autonomy or, at least, some underlying emancipatory and anti-colonialist feelings. Even when these feelings did not mobilize relevant segments of the population, they disclose the alterity – above all cultural – in regard to sovereignty.

  Connecting Mediterranean and Atlantic History

  2nd meeting of the Atlantic Italies Network

  The Atlantic Italies Network – a developing network of scholars working on economic entanglements and related cultural phenomena that emerged between Italian-speaking territories and the Atlantic world from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century – aims at examining connections related to European states without colonies as well as their links to sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas and at contributing to current attempts to analyse early modern Italian territories in their global contexts. The second meeting of the network will particularly appreciate papers involving economic dimensions related to shipping, trade and economic interconnections, but we welcome all proposals contributing to our overall perspective.

  Four-year PhD position in History (University of Berne)

  The Historical Institute of the University of Bern invites applications for a four-year PhD position in History. The position is scheduled to start on November 1, 2018. The PhD student will be a member of the Project "Atlantic Italies: Economic and Cultural Entanglements (15^th-19^th Centuries)”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2018-2022) and directed by Dr. Roberto Zaugg. The prospective PhD student is expected to have good knowledge of Italian, Latin and English and at least basic knowledge of German, as well as practical experience in working with early modern manuscript sources.

  Methodologies, objectives, perspectives

  In the last four decades, scholars have begun to go beyond the traditional perspective of linguistic and literary studies, and to consider the translations as cultural practices and the result of various processes of cultural and intellectual “negotiation” between two different contexts. In recent years also historians have progressively started to take a close interest in translations as sources to investigate the ways in which knowledge and ideas were constructed, disseminated, re-elaborated and assimilated in new cultural, social and political contexts. The aims of this international conference is to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue on these problems, bringing together scholars, graduate students and early career researchers from Translation Studies, History, History of Book, History of Science, Literary Studies and related disciplines who are interested in discussing methodologies, objectives and perspectives in the study of translations.

  Les premières constructions monumentales du néolithique tardif en Europe l’attestent déjà : le bois est fondation, fait structure et constitue charpente ; il incarne très tôt l’étai et, à ce titre, s’impose rapidement comme l’élément constitutif du projet de conservation des structures. Le bois interagit étroitement avec les autres matériaux, dont il est l’interface, et avec son environnement. Spécialistes du matériau, de ses composantes, de ses pathologies, experts des études préalables et du diagnostic, maîtres d’œuvre intervenant sur le bâti patrimonial questionneront les problématiques historiques jalonnant les usages éprouvés et pluriels du bois : architectures, sols, charpentes, décors et menuiseries sont autant de traités de pathologies dont s’emparent désormais les outils numériques au service du diagnostic.

  The life of medieval prose in the dawn of modernity

  Le milieu du XVème siècle se caractérise, notamment, par l’émergence de bouleversements profonds pour la production, la circulation, la transmission, voire la canonisation de la culture écrite occidentale. La diffusion s’accélère, les œuvres partent à la rencontre d’un public plus ample et plus diversifié et de nouveaux acteurs font leur entrée dans les circuits de transmission. Ce changement de rythme et de fonctionnement a principalement été étudié sous l’angle du mode de production, au départ du circuit imprimerie/humanisme et en mettant l’emphase sur ce que la Modernité naissante introduisait de nouveauté en termes d’écart, d’altérité, de rupture, voire de polémique. La perspective sera ici inversée, et c’est davantage l’angle de la continuité qui déterminera la vision. Le Moyen Âge, en effet, poursuit son avancée dans le temps, et le ‘long Moyen Âge’ dont parle Jacques Le Goff peut s’appréhender d’une façon très concrète à partir précisément de la transmission des textes médiévaux en langue française dans l’Occident et dans la Méditerranée.

  Court identities and the myth of Versailles in Europe

  Perception, adherence and rejection (18th-19th centuries)

  The “modern” courts in Europe included the institutional, social, societal and cultural aspects concomitant with the political affirmation of personalities emerging, by agreement or through conflict, from communities exercising power together in order to seize authority for their own personal benefit and to develop a range of encomiastic processes for their own person. In the 15^th, 16^th and 17^th centuries, the princely courts in Europe did not confine themselves to one single paradigm. There were as many courts as there were princely houses, as many “national” types, even if some, like the Burgundian court in the 15^th century and the courts in northern and central Italy in the 15^th and 16^th centuries, proposed models and exercised influence from one end of Europe to the other, while accommodating indigenous influences.

  Figures of inspiration in French poetry in the 17th century

  Ce colloque vise à permettre une réévaluation de la place de l’inspiration dans la poésie française du XVIIe siècle. Il considérera ce qu’a laissé dans l’ombre le constat d’un « crépuscule de l’enthousiasme » (M. Fumaroli) au XVIIe siècle, une fois Malherbe venu. Cette vue, thématisée par la prédominance de l’« art » sur la « nature » dans l’exercice du poète, tend pourtant à laisser de côté des figures de l’inspiration – figures du poète inspiré tout autant que figurations dans le discours poétique de l’énonciation inspirée – qui continuent de travailler l’héritage de la Renaissance. Des poètes religieux, de Claude Hopil à Madame Guyon, adaptent en effet le cadre métaphysique de la fureur à une conception mystique de l’enthousiasme poétique ; de nombreux autres formulent des paraphrases plus ou moins libres des livres bibliques au titre d’une expérience chrétienne inspirée, alors que la révélation prophétique est close.
