Religion of the Ancient Near East: New Developments (RANEND)
Among the Near Eastern research programs of interest to Ghent, ULille and UCLouvain universities, the study of religion in the Near East has been chosen as a central theme of a new cooperation project, as several teachers-researchers, doctoral and post-doctoral students are already involved in this field. in 2018, we will start with a masterclass on Hittite religion with Dr Alice Mouton (CNRS - UMR 8167), a well-known scholar of the Hittite world and a specialist of religion in ancient Anatolia, first step to renew the approaches and to develop a reflection of the importance of this subject in ancien Near Eastern societies. Other conferences on the theme of religion in the Ancient Near East and Egypt will be delivered on the same day by other scholars from England, France and Belgium.

Summer School - Prehistory and Antiquity
ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency)
The ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency; 741182; http://map-polytheisms.huma-num.fr1) works on the naming systems for the divine in the Greek and Western Semitic worlds, from 1000 BCE to 400 CE and views them as testimonies to the way in which divine powers are constructed, arranged and involved within ritual. The analysis deals both with the structural aspects of the religious systems and with their contextual appropriation by social participants. Considered to be elements of a complex language, the onomastic channels are related to the gods, therefore providing access to a mapping process of the divine, to its ways of representation and to the communication strategies between men and gods.Within this framework, the MAP Team proposes a Summer School in collaboration with the French Research Centre in Jerusalem (http://www.crfj.org) which covers the project’s themes and tools.

Mission traditionnelle des clercs, la prédication légitime leur prise de parole en public, ce qui, longtemps, les a singularisés dans l’espace social. Ce colloque entend explorer la contribution des prédicateurs à la critique politique. La prédication est porteuse, en effet, d’une puissance critique à l’égard des pouvoirs. Le simple fait que le clerc (et l’institution dont il relève) pose son intervention publique comme mission divine ouvre un espace à la contestation, à la subversion, vis-à-vis des pouvoirs temporels.

Guest researchers – Project ERC Mapping Ancient Polytheisms
Over the next four years, the ERC Advanced Grant MAP 741182 project has budgetary support available in order to invite researchers. These stays can be from 2 to 4 months per researcher, with the exclusion of the months of July and August (due to the fact that the university is closed for a large part of the summer). Guest researchers will work within the team, exchanging therein and participating in the improvement of the databases. Guest researchers will equally be requested to take part in MAP scientific activities (seminars, workshops, conferences…). The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everybody, of French or foreign nationality, whose competences and project are deemed to be of interest to the MAP project.

The reception of Luther in France and Europe - the origins of the Reform
Il y a 500 ans, à l’automne 1518, un an après la publication de ses 95 thèses, la pensée de Luther pénètre pour la première fois en France, sous la forme d’un recueil de textes récemment publié à Bâle. Les œuvres du Réformateur commencent ainsi par être importées dans le royaume ; elles circulent et y sont lues ; elles seront bientôt réimprimées et traduites, mais aussi contestées,condamnées et parfois détruites. L'ambition de ces journées d'étude est d'explorer les premiers temps de la réception de la Réforme en France, et d'apporter quelques éclairages complémentaires sur la réception du luthéranisme en Europe et dans le monde.

Né au siècle des saints, le mouvement port-royaliste se forge dans un moment où les questions sur la sainteté sont de plus en plus prégnantes. Après le concile de Trente s’affirme une pensée de style juridique dans la théologie, qui conduit le magistère romain à alourdir sensiblement les processus de canonisation. En 1588, la création de la Sacrée Congrégation des Rites permet de donner un premier cadre normatif aux causes de canonisation. Après avoir institué le promoteur de la Foi en 1631, Urbain VIII renforce la codification de l’instruction des procès. La nouvelle législation, définitivement validée en 1642, impose le procès super non cultu vérifiant l’absence de culte local et l’obligation de respecter un délai de cinquante ans entre la date du décès du serviteur de Dieu et l’ouverture de la procédure apostolique.

Protestant art in France before the revocation of the Edict of Nantes
Avec l’édit de Fontainebleau pris en 1685, le pouvoir royal met un terme à la mixité confessionnelle que l’édit de Nantes de 1598 avait instaurée. Entre ces deux dates, une importante communauté d’artistes protestants a œuvré en France, tantôt pour ses coreligionnaires, tantôt pour les catholiques. D’aucuns jouissaient d’une grande réputation, comme la famille Elle, qui a créé nombre de portraits de l’aristocratie sous Louis XIII. Sébastien Bourdon, Henry Testelin et Abraham Bosse, tous réformés, ont même réussi à intégrer l’Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, gage pour un artiste d’un rayonnement institutionnel et commercial supérieur à l’époque.

L’objectif du séminaire est de poursuivre notre réflexion collective sur les noms des dieux et les stratégies de dénominations dans la fabrique du divin, en considérant des dossiers qui sont aux frontières – géographiques etchronologiques – de notre projet, en particulier : les textes ougaritiques, les mondes hittites et mésopotamiens, ainsi que l’Iran (achéménide), la Gaule, Rome et l’Arabie pré-islamique.

Creation, functions and uses
À la fin du Moyen Âge, la production hagiographique manuscrite se transforme et connaît son dernier âge d’or entre le succès éditorial de la Légende dorée et l’arrivée de l’imprimerie. De nombreux textes anciens sont abrégés pour intégrer de nouvelles collections. Ce phénomène est en partie responsable du relatif désintérêt des historiens à leur égard : à quoi bon s’intéresser à ces abrégés alors qu’il reste tant à découvrir dans les grands légendiers du Moyen Âge central, et qu’on commence à peine à mieux connaître les tout premiers manuscrits conservés ? L’objectif de ce colloque en deux temps (Lille, 30 novembre 2018 et Namur/Louvain, 21-22 mars 2019) est de mieux saisir la place du manuscrit hagiographique, entendu ici au sens large, dans le nord de la France et l’espace belge à la fin du Moyen Âge, en prolongeant notamment les réflexions de Guy Philippart sur la fabrique et les usages des légendiers, à une période où la documentation susceptible de les appréhender est plus abondante.

Le Pôle de conservation des archives des associations de jeunesse et d'éducation populaire (PAJEP) organise une journée d’étude consacrée à l’histoire des mouvements d’Action catholique spécialisée qui s’adressent aux adolescents et aux jeunes hommes et femmes (Jeunesse étudiante chrétienne, Jeunesse indépendante chrétienne, Jeunesse maritime chrétienne, Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne, Mouvement rural de la jeunesse chrétienne). Cette manifestation, qui porte sur la période 1965-1979, est le prolongement d’une première journée d’étude, traitant du même sujet, pour la période antérieure (1945-1965). Elle se tiendra à Paris à l’automne 2019.

"Mysteries" in the 2nd century AD - the mystical turn?
Cette rencontre conclut près de quatre années de recherche sur « Les “cultes à mystères” (mystêria, teletai, orgia, etc.) et leurs acteurs spécialisés ». Elle s’appuie théoriquement et méthodologiquement sur un ensemble de dossiers (historiographie, lexique textuel et visuel, données rituelles) qui ont déjà fait l’objet d’analyses lors de rencontres précédentes. Les conclusions de ces études invitent à resserrer l’enquête sur l’hypothèse d’un « tournant mystérique » au IIe siècle de notre ère, c’est-à-dire d’un changement de paradigme non seulement dans les discours sur les mystères et leur représentation, mais aussi dans les rituels désormais ainsi qualifiés (mystikos et mystêriôdês par exemple).

Expressions et instruments du politique
Les arts d’Ancien Régime étaient souvent des arts de circonstance, au discours contraint, sans que ce constat doive entraîner un quelconque jugement de valeur esthétique, en ce que ces arts prennent leur sens plein dans un contexte social dont le jeu politique n’est jamais complètement absent. De nombreux indices invitent donc à reconsidérer la littérature de la première modernité dans le cadre social et idéologique qui était le sien et à aborder les choix esthétiques non plus seulement comme l’expression de préférences personnelles mais également comme celle d’un projet lié au groupe auquel l'artiste se rattache. Nous nous proposons donc d’examiner le lien entre le politique et les arts en prêtant une attention redoublée au contexte d’énonciation ou de performance des œuvres, afin de faire apparaître la dimension politique des choix esthétiques même en l’absence de contenus explicitement politiques.

This conference will explore the international legal agreements signed between the Holy See and individual states, which often but not always took the form of concordats and similar conventions. Its central focus will be to examine these conventions in light of diplomatic practices, as well as in relation to the political and religious dynamics of the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries, notably the principles and requirements that comprised modernity. This entails assessing the historical evolution of the typology, method, content, scope, and spaces concerned.

Cet appel à communications est dédié à un atelier de jeunes chercheurs dont l'objectif sera de faire un état des lieux de la recherche concernant la question de la réforme grégorienne, de sa définition et de la compréhension de ses enjeux, dans les espaces francophones et germanophones, dans une démarche non seulement comparatiste, mais aussi transdisciplinaire, puisqu'il s'agira d'interroger l'état de la question aussi bien en histoire politique qu'en histoire du droit, en histoire de l'art qu'en théologie, par exemple. Cet atelier de jeunes chercheurs est organisé par Tristan Martine (université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, CIHAM-UMR 5648) et Jérémy Winandy (universität Hamburg).

Autumn conferences in Paray-le-Monial
Dans l’Antiquité chrétienne, la caritas, c’est-à-dire l’amour du prochain, fait passer la sollicitude envers les faibles et les malades de la sphère privée au domaine public. Le cadre institutionnel de ce qui deviendra l’hôpital est défini dans le code de Justinien au VIe siècle. L’accueil des voyageurs, les soins donnés aux malades et l’assistance envers les indigents font partie des objectifs que l’Église se fixe très tôt (canon LXXV du concile de Nicée, 325). Dès le haut Moyen Âge, les évêques ont obligation de créer et d’entretenir dans leur ville un hôpital : le xenodochium. Celui de Césarée de Cappadoce, fondé vers 370 par saint Basile, évêque de la ville, nous est connu grâce à une description de Grégoire de Nazianze.

Thinking freely in religion in English-speaking countries
This conference will explore the different ways by which thinking freely in religion has been understood and practiced in English-speaking countries since the Middle Ages. The starting point is the peculiar way by which freethought has been historically associated with hostility to religion. What is, therefore, thinking freely in religion? The conference calls for papers about the free spaces created by religious traditions and institutions in the English-speaking world and about how these spaces relate to freethought and to any way of thinking freely that is hostile to religion. The conference aims for a long-term perspective on the interactions between freethought and thinking freely, and calls for papers on any historical period from the Middle Ages to the present.

Dressing Divinely: clothed or naked deities an devotees
The XVII International Colloquium of the Association ARYS (Antiquity, Religions and Societies) is dedicated to the study of the links between religious identity and clothing within the framework of ancient societies and religions, from the perspective of the images either of the gods or of their devotees. Within the topic of religious clothing will be included the religious use of clothes and attributes, accesories, ornaments, body modifications such as mutilations or tattoos, hairstyles, nudity and, of course, the action itself of dressing or undressing, its conception and positive, neutral or negative consideration, or the act of assuming any of those human or divine complements, adornments, attributes or modifications of the body. We welcome the participation of consolidated as well as early-career specialists in the field of ancient history, archaeology, religious sciences, art history and historiography of religions.
