  Violence and film

  The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the depiction of violence in film and television. Violence, real or threatened, drives the plots of many, if not most, of the narratives we watch on the screen. Detectives solve grisly murders, victims seek revenge, teenagers flee slashers, gangsters spray bullets, Kungfu fighters trade punches, and armies clash on the battlefield (or in outer space). While almost everyone claims to wants to reduce the levels of violence in society, movie audiences regularly get an enormous kick out of watching on the screen what we abhor in real life. But not all cinematic violence is meant to titillate. Often the aim is to bring audiences closer to the sickening reality of the mistreatment and abuse suffered by those whose plights might otherwise remain invisible to us. While many worry that exposure to cinematic violence may desensitize us, perhaps it can also serve to awaken our empathy.

  Memory, Assimilation, accommodation: New approaches to visiting memorials and museums

  For several years, Matrice, an equipment of excellence (technological platform aimed at better understanding the relationship between individual and collective memory), and the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA) have been organizing a monthly seminar on memory issues. At the end of this year, they are offering an international workshop, on June 14, 2019 at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, which will be devoted to the appropriation of museum spaces by visitors with the theme : “Memory, assimilation, accommodation: new approaches to visiting museums and memorials”. This international workshop is part of the international study and research day organized by the École du Louvre on June 13, in collaboration with the Université du Québec à Montréal and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. These two events are part of the scientific exchanges between the Equipex Matrice and the École du Louvre.

  Les disciplines scientifiques se référant à la carte mentale sont toujours plus nombreuses et les méthodes de recueil de plus en plus variées, entremêlant souvent des modes hybrides entre la représentation mentale ou cognitive, liée à la représentation sociale et à l'imaginaire collectif, le parcours commenté, le dessin réflexif, le jeu, l’enquête visuelle, les cartes collectives... Dans ces représentations spatiales, l’espace est un cadre – géographique, certes, mais également un espace social, de pratiques, psychologique, cognitif, politique, artistique, identitaire, symbolique, etc. L’idée est de savoir si l’on peut changer la dimension – ainsi que le support – de la carte mentale (2D, 3D, utilisation de drône, réalité augmentée, etc. ?).

  The private press in Cameroon: autopsie of a model in crisis

  Depuis le début des années 1990, la presse privée a pris une place très importante dans la vie publique voir même privée au Cameroun. D’abords par la presse écrite, les médias privés ont progressivement pris une part non négligeable, pour dire le moins dans la société camerounaise au point de remettre en question le professionnalisme et l’objectivité des médias d’Etat (Crtv radio et télé, Cameroon Tribune). Ainsi, après la presse écrite, la radio, la télé et l’internet sont devenus les maîtres qui tentent de structurer au quotidien la société camerounaise. La démocratie camerounaise tant convoquée par les régimes Ahidjo et Biya s’est donc depuis bientôt trois décennies mise à l’épreuve de cette presse. Taxée de quatrième pouvoir, la presse au Cameroun est pourtant dans une situation très ambiguë...

  International study day looking at discoverability and access to Francophone content in the digital era

  L’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), sur une proposition du Comité d’orientation de son dispositif d’observation des dynamiques culturelles et linguistiques, co-organise avec l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) des journées d’étude internationales, afin de mettre en lumière les opportunités, les pratiques, les modèles d’affaires émergents ainsi que les nouveaux enjeux et défis en lien avec la découvrabilité et l’accès aux contenus culturels francophones à l’ère numérique. Ces journées d’étude visent à réunir des experts et professionnels des industries culturelles (artistes, réalisateurs, producteurs, diffuseurs), des décideurs publics (représentants gouvernementaux) et des chercheurs-universitaires (professeurs, postdoctorants, doctorants, étudiants de 2ème cycle) de différentes disciplines en provenance des pays francophones, afin d’examiner ensemble les enjeux, défis, processus, pratiques et innovations caractérisant les nouvelles modalités de découverte, d’accès et de consommation de la production culturelle francophone à l’ère numérique.

  Liberal democracy and freedom of expression

  Fondements essentiels des démocraties libérales, la liberté d’expression en général et les médias en particulier, sont aujourd’hui pris dans les turbulences suscitées par l’essor concomitant des « démocraties illibérales » populistes et des nouvelles technologies de l’information. Tant en Occident que dans d’autres régions du monde, des régimes ou gouvernements autoritaires issus des urnes font souvent preuve d’agressivité inégalée envers les médias, assimilés à un establishment et désignés à la vindicte du peuple, dans un contexte où l’indépendance des médias dans les démocraties libérales pose par ailleurs question. Profitant des possibilités offertes par les nouvelles technologies, ces régimes revendiquent le droit de communiquer directement et de s’émanciper de toute tutelle. Souvent pris pour acquis, le postulat du caractère antagoniste des relations entre populisme et liberté d’expression, est sans doute plus complexe qu’il n’y paraît, et il semble opportun de s’y pencher.

  Networks and practices of clandestinity in the age of the religious wars

  The French religious wars of the late sixteenth century provided a ready platform for the use of secretive means by which all parties (Protestant, Catholic, Royalist, Leaguer) protected and perpetuated their cause, as well as transmitted messages and news across France and to their allies abroad, generating a culture of clandestine networks. The French crown, other foreign powers and their ambassadors also made use of such practices. In practical terms, the use of ciphers and pseudonyms allowed for the safe passage of messages and messengers. For individuals, finding means of concealment for their clandestine activities was vital, especially in the towns. Intelligence-gathering and espionage sought to counter as well as to support such practices. This workshop seeks to uncover the clandestinity of the sixteenth century in order to enhance and deepen our understanding of this contested period in French history.

  In the shadow of coastal landscapes. Aesthetics and the representation of seaside exoticism

  Kenneth White aime à rappeler ce proverbe celte : « le rivage a toujours été un lieu de prédilection pour les poètes ». Le rivage, ou plutôt « les rivages », font l’objet de cette journée d’étude organisée à l’université Nice Sophia Antipolis par le laboratoire interdisciplinaire Récits, cultures et sociétés (LIRCES, EA 3159). Désireux d’aborder ce qui constitue un imaginaire littoral, il s’agira de revenir sur les spécificités du paysage côtier et ses représentations cinématographiques, médiatiques. Sur le plan du territoire, la « littoralité » chère à Kenneth White prend ici de multiples formes : lieux anthropiques par excellence, les rivieras se distinguent par leur urbanisation massive et un aménagement qui privilégie, sans nul doute, les loisirs. Mais ce serait omettre leur dimension à la fois humaine et tragique, à l’ombre des palmiers et d’un imaginaire que l’on aurait tôt fait de réduire à une simple carte postale.

  This conference explores the growing prominence of making in architecture, as manifested by architects who engage more directly in building practices, dealing more closely with materials and techniques. The colloquium proposes to investigate a diverse set of cases where making is re-evaluated and celebrated. It calls for papers along three lines of inquiry: historical and theoretical perspectives on the evolution of the relationship between thinking and making, and its consequences in architecture, case studies that assess the motivations and values of actors involved in making in the field of architecture, investigations into the means and tools that aim at a closer relationship between designers, materials and built forms.

  What do pictures do? (In)visibilizing the subaltern

  In the wake of the pictorial turn, as individuation processes increasingly involve visual identifications, visibility has become a central paradigm of today’s social imagination. Whether desired, imposed, refused or denied, chosen or endured, visibility is now both an individual injunction and an institutional rationale (Zawadzki), regarded as the vehicle and guardian of social existence (Honneth). Based on these premises, social invisibility characterizes individuals who are excluded from authorized visualities and majority visual discourses, and thus denied access to the social gaze. This conference will explore the process of (in)visibilizing the subaltern in visual culture and visual arts, focusing on three questions: the process of invisibilizing (strategies, apparatuses, institutions); visuality and resistance (counter-visuality, visual sovereignty and the "right to appear"); towards post-visuality (invisibility as tactic?).
