Labour and Migration in the Age of Borders
The recent focus in politics and the media on the “migration crisis” and the rise of populisms in Europe is an invitation to interrogate migrations in the light of geopolitical, ethical or identity approaches. With this thematic issue we wish to complement, not contradict, these approaches by reintroducing the economic dimension of migration through a study of the multiple forms of work and labor; and address the entanglements between migration policy and work. This special issue asks the following question: what can we learn from the exploration of migrant labor in an age of advanced capitalism and border consolidation? It will look at the relation between migratory statuses, legal and professional situations, under a juridical and socio-economic perspective: at the articulation of power relations within forms of migrant labor; at the impact of processes of borderization on the various worlds of labor; at the forms of resistance to exploitation and subjugation of migrant workers or employees working with migrants. These multiple forms of action at the margins indicate that rather than being depoliticized, labor — and especially labor as it is transformed by migration — remains today a privileged site for understanding the political effects of greater flexibility when it comes to working conditions, the denial of recognition for workers and the hidden face of authoritarian capitalism.

Cet appel à ouvrage collectif pluridisciplinaire pose la question suivante : « Quelles réalités et articulations entre réserves de biosphères et objectifs de développement durable dans l'espace mediterranéen ? ». Ce questionnement devra conduire à formaliser un contenu scientifique qui constituera le socle éducatif et de formation de nature réflexive sur les réserves de biosphères. Répondant à une exigence pluridisciplinaire et à celle d’un dialogue citoyens-acteur-chercheur les questionnements doivent croiser plusieurs points de vues impliquant les sphères environnementales, agronomiques, géographiques, économiques, sociologiques, éducatives, technologiques, etc.

Commemorating in a global world
"L’Espace Politique" journal, no.42 (2020-3)
Ce numéro spécial de la revue L'Espace Politique questionne la commémoration sous l'angle géographique et géopolitique. Alors que s’achève le centenaire de la première guerre mondiale, nous souhaitons interroger à nouveaux frais le phénomène commémoratif et les politiques mémorielles, dont l’étude connait un certain renouvellement (Garcia, 2001, Kesteloot C., Van Ypersele L., 2016). La commémoration recouvre une grande diversité de pratiques loin de se restreindre à la mémoire des guerres (Ashplant, 2000, West, 2016) ou des grandes figures nationales (par exemple incarnées par les panthéonisations en France). Ce numéro pourra ainsi s’ouvrir à une approche élargie du phénomène commémoratif.

Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge
This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

Sans doute bien différemment, dès aujourd’hui, et plus encore demain, compte tenu des fragilités de longue date du monde méditerranéen. Changer nos modes de vie ? Telle est la question qui servira de fil conducteur au cours des six séances de notre atelier de recherche, en 2020.

Après une première journée qui a permis d’ouvrir les pistes de réflexion sur la microgéographie, à prendre la mesure de sa complexité, et une seconde s’attachant à l’éclairer à travers la question du terrain, cette nouvelle journée tente d’appréhender en quoi ce nouvel ajustement de notre point de vue sur les acteurs et le monde qui les entourent, permet de lire les règles spatiales qui légitiment nos jeux de place et génèrent nos spatialités qui tantôt nous rassemblent et tantôt nous séparent.

Le tourisme a été jusqu’à la fin du XXe siècle une pratique essentiellement occidentale. De ce fait, la rencontre avec les populations autochtones a été largement abordée à travers le concept d’acculturation. Cette approche a d’autant plus convenu que la diffusion des touristes a été en grande partie orchestrée par le déploiement de l’appareil de production capitaliste et s’est construite dans les contextes du colonialisme et du néocolonialisme. Ainsi, George Cazes a sous-titré le second volume de l’ouvrage tiré de sa thèse consacrée au tourisme dans les pays du Tiers Monde : « Les nouvelles colonies de vacances » (1992). La métaphore traduit l’approche dominante de l’époque. En effet, le tourisme s’inscrit dans un rapport entre le centre et ses périphéries, engendrant l’intégration des pratiques dans un processus de domination et d’expansion symbolique et matérielle des sociétés occidentales.

Transition, territories and actors
Pour cette journée, nous souhaitons aborder les transformations sociales et territoriales en cours, ou en devenir, dans le contexte du changement climatique à travers le concept récent de « transition ». Nous vous invitons à interroger les actions concrètes sur les territoires, menées par différents acteurs (citoyens, société civile, acteurs publics), qui s’inscrivent dans des dynamiques de transitions - même si ces transitions peuvent être définies par ces acteurs de manière parfois différente (voire même contradictoire). Nous proposons donc de questionner les politiques et actions de ces acteurs et leurs effets sur les territoires à travers trois axes. Ils constituent chacun une entrée, non exclusive, pour traiter de ces enjeux. Loin de s’enfermer derrière un type d’acteur, il s’agira de questionner les relations complémentaires ou contradictoires qu’ils ont entre eux, et les effets des actions entreprises sur la définition même de la transition.

The COST Action “Islamic Legacy: Narratives East, West, South, North of the Mediterranean (1350-1750)” [CA 18129] is launching a call for a conference “Soldiers, prisoners and converts between permeable borders in the Mare Nostrum (16th-18th centuries)”. The event that we are disseminating is being organised within this project, which as the purpose to provide a transnational and interdisciplinary approach capable of overcoming the segmentation that currently characterizes the study of relations between Christianity and Islam in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. We aim to create a network that will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of past relations between Christianity and Islam in the European context through the addressing of three main research problems: otherness, migration and borders.

LGBTI and Queer Arts, Cultures and Activisms
In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists.

KISMIF Conference 2020
We are pleased to announce the fifth KISMIF International Conference ‘Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! DIY Cultures and Global Challenges’ (KISMIF Conference 2020) which will take place in Porto, Portugal, between 8 July and 11 July 2020. The submission of abstracts for this conference is open to academic researchers working in all areas of sociology, anthropology, history, cultural economics, cultural studies, geography, philosophy, urban planning, media, and cognate disciplines, such as design, illustration, popular music, cinema, visual and performing arts. This initiative follows the great success of the past four KISMIF Conferences (held in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018) and brings together an international community of researchers focusing on underground music scenes and do-it-yourself cultures.

The Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Conference 2020 will be preceded by a Summer School entitled ‘Not Just Holidays in the Sun’ on 7 July 2020 in Rivoli Municipal Theatre of Porto. The Summer School will offer an opportunity for all interested persons, including those participating in the Conference, to attend workshops directed by specialists in their fields. Our KISMIF Summer School program invites students who are interested in, or currently using, DIY cultures in their research to join us for an exciting and innovative one-day summer school program. The goal of the one-day program will be to encourage discussion and experimentation in the documentation of DIY cultures as much as it will be to encourage a new generation of DIY academics (Punk Ethnographers!) to experiment with digital cinema and performance in their research practices.

The Public Sphere and the Politics of Space
With the gradual rise of socio-economic and political challenges facing the Middle East and North African (MENA) and the Sub-Saharan regions, the “public space” and the “public sphere” have come to the forefront of scholarly debates and research by scholars in various fields of studies. The concept of the “public sphere” was conceived as part of the interplay of first a physical locale that imply constant social relationships in a concrete public domain (public space) and second the constellations of socio-economic factors contributing to the rise of political debates (public sphere). The aim of this conference is to probe social, economic, political problems via the theoretical lenses of the public sphere, the different aspects of spatial configurations, the politics of space, as well as the counter-public or parallel discursive arenas as conceived by Nancy Fraser.

Slovakia in Europe in the past century
L’objectif de ce cycle de conférences est de croiser les perspectives de différentes disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales sur le cheminement de la Slovaquie au cours de ce dernier siècle. Il s’agit en particulier de montrer en quoi l’expérience slovaque, aux côtés de celles d’autres pays de l’Europe centrale, mais souvent moins connue, enrichit la compréhension de phénomènes qui ont marqué le siècle : déplacements de frontières, disparitions et apparitions d’États, persistance ou disparition de communautés non slaves (Hongrois, Allemands, Juifs, Ukrainiens, Roms, etc.), compétition de modèles de société et circulation d’imaginaires et de styles artistiques. Ces phénomènes se sont accompagnés d’une modernisation accélérée du pays et d’un mouvement inédit dans sa construction en État-nation.

L'école inclusive semble être le nouveau horizon des sociétés démocratiques, dans un contexte de promotion des « relations horizontales » et d'accessibilité généralisée : pourtant, il est important de souligner que dire n'est pas faire. Derrière les idéologies et les récits, concrètement, comment se matérialise le discours inclusif dans l'école, la société et le territoire ? Quelle traduction institutionnelle de la dialectique école inclusive, handicap et territoires ? Les réflexions peuvent également intégrer un axe socio-anthropologique, se concentrer sur les référents axiologiques de l'inclusion, les imaginaires, les symboles, participant d'un renouvellement d'un rapport à l'autre dans la société occidentale, ou simple avatar de la médicalisation des comportements sociaux jugés comme problématiques ?

Making the city: thinking and representing urban production
Ces journées d’études viennent en prolongement du projet de recherche ALARIC (A la recherche de l’incrémentation du changement) soutenu par le Labex Intelligence des Mondes Urbains (Université de Lyon, France). Elles proposent un retour réflexif sur la définition du changement urbain et ses méthodes d’appréhension. Elles souhaitent faire dialoguer des projets pluridisciplinaires pour lesquels l’observation dans la longue durée et la mobilisation d’une documentation variée sont les fils directeurs d’une méthode permettant de renseigner l’évolution des pratiques, les transformations de la matérialité urbaine ou des représentations territoriales. Ce faisant, les journées interrogent notre connaissance des mutations urbaines en cours et les démarches prospectives portant sur la transition vers une ville durable.
