The representation

Les Cahiers d’études des cultures ibériques et latino-américaines (CECIL)

The problem of representation is central to the disciplinary fields of all the human and social sciences, most often implicitly. This omnipresence sometimes makes us forget that it is a notion whose definition, status and function are subject to the fluctuations of history. What interests us is the discrepancy between what this notion has been able to encompass over time and what it encompasses nowadays, as well as the explanation that can be given to these discrepancies or possible ruptures. The reflection focuses in particular on the link between the notion of representation and the notions of 'heritage' - tangible or intangible objects, but also products of a social construction - and of 'memory', since it is constructed through concrete representations, whether social or discursive practices.

Cet appel à textes vise à réunir des articles d’auteur·e·s francophones, des Nords et des Suds, en géographie du commerce et de la consommation. L’objectif est de favoriser la perméabilité des travaux francophones à l’échelle internationale par la publication d’articles portant sur des analyses de cas socialement contextualisées ou encore à visée conceptuelle et/ou théorique. L’ouvrage, qui rassemblera des contributions rédigées en anglais, sera publié chez Edward Elgar Publishing dans la collection The International Geographical Union Series on Contemporary Geographies et apportera un éclairage sur la production récente francophone en géographie du commerce de détail et de la consommation.

Making society without god or master. Can we envisage humanity without religion?

De la Révolution française au milieu du XIX^e, un grand nombre de pensées et théories ont cherché à réorganiser la société. Si l'on s'est surtout intéressé dans les sciences humaines et sociales à la portée politique de ces théories, leur dimension religieuse n'est pas négligeable. Des Lumières aux premiers socialismes en passant par de nombreuses théories de philanthropie ou de réformes sociales, on constate que le religeux occupe une place importante dans ces pensées. Qu'il s'agisse de réinventer la religion, défendre sa tradition ou au contraire la voir disparaître, la création d'une nouvelle société aux XVIII^e et XIX^e siècles a conduit à de nombreuses pensées et théories qui articulent le religieux et le social. L'objectif de ce colloque est de revenir sur ces pensées du religieux en les confrontant aux discours politiques et pratiques sociales de leur époque.

Countering extremist violence in Cameroon

Depuis près d’une décennie, le Cameroun est victime des affres de la violence de groupes d’obédience politique ou religieuse qui instrumentalisent la politique et la religion pour contester l’État, sa centralité, son intégrité et sa souveraineté. Les politiques ont adressé des réponses qui jusqu’ici, n’arrivent pas à contenir la radicalité de ces acteurs dont l’objectif est de décimer la forme d’organisation sociale actuelle dont est revêtu le Cameroun. Au regard de cet échec incontestable et de la subsistance voire de l’emprise de ces bâtisseurs du désordre dans l’État en cette nouvelle décennie, comment répondre originalement et efficacement à la violence manifeste dans les trois régions du nord-ouest, du sud-ouest et de l’extrême-nord, refuges indubitables de l’extrémisme violent dans ce pays ? Le présent appel n’entend pas recevoir des contributions sur l’étiologie ou la phénoménologie de ce phénomène au Cameroun. Tourné vers une intelligence prospective et praxéologique, il s’intéresse aux perspectives stratégiques et opérationnelles de lutte contre le phénomène en évaluant les initiatives déjà amorcées et en proposant de nouvelles pistes d’action pour l’endiguer considérablement.

Clausewitz, still perhaps the most important and referenced theorist of war, was deeply influenced by the thought and philosophy of his own time. Although Clausewitz rejected an abstract philosophy of war, he highlighted that his approach was a philosophical attempt to understand war. His “wondrous trinity,” as well as his dialectics of defense and offense are essentially hybrid conceptualizations. By elaborating the philosophical foundations of Clausewitz’s theory, this special issue aims to contribute to a better understanding of the ongoing transformation of war and violent action in a globalized world.

Contending Representations: Questioning Republicanism in Early Modern Genoa (1559-1684)

In the past thirty years, several studies have been devoted to the political and cultural flowering of the republic of Genoa during the so-called ‘siglo de los Genoveses’, between 1528 and 1630, when Genoa became the hub of European trade and an important epicenter of artistic and literary production. Yet little attention has been granted to the cultural and economic crisis that followed or to how Genoese republican state power was represented during the long seventeenth century, especially in relation to neighbouring polities. To address this gap, the conference will explore how the Genoese Republic shaped its political image between 1559 – the year of the publication of Oberto Foglietta’s Delle cose della repubblica di Genova – and 1684, when Genoa was bombed by the French. We intend to address questions such as how did Genoese politicians and men of letters represent their homeland? How was Genoa represented by the Genoese community in Spain or in the Low Countries? How was its political system conceived by other Italian and non-Italian political writers? And how did prevailing depictions of absolutism influence republican rhetoric?

The SIPCs were born in 1996 on a Brazilian initiative and have been held every two years in Latin America to encourage the exchange of ideas and research results among scientists from various disciplines who find in Norbert Elias’ work a source of guidance in facing the challenges of today’s world and who share an interest in social sciences adjusted to reality.

Ce colloque, organisé par le groupe de recherche « MemWar. Mémoires et oublis des guerres et des traumatismes du XX^e siècle » du Département de Langues et cultures modernes de l’Université de Gênes, vise à analyser les modalités de transmission mémorielle de ces conflits au XXI^e siècle, les représentations de ces derniers, les points aveugles et/ou obscurs de ce processus mémoriel, y compris dans une optique critique (Ricoeur, 2003) et, enfin, comment se développent les rapports de force entre discours officiel et contre-discours.

Tourism, environment, society and sustainable development

Depuis le processus de démocratisation du régime, le Bénin mise sur le tourisme pour participer au développement du pays. Le récent plan stratégique de développement touristique (2017-2027), la création de formations de niveau supérieur dans les domaines du tourisme et de l’hôtellerie ainsi que les nouvelles options retenues par le gouvernement en matière de durabilité laissent entrevoir le développement d’un tourisme de meilleure qualité reposant sur la valorisation des atouts indéniables du territoire et une bien meilleure maîtrise de ce secteur d’activité par les autochtones. C’est dans ce contexte qu’est née l’idée d’une organisation conjointe d’un colloque international pluridisciplinaire. Ainsi, à partir de la thématique transversale du tourisme, le colloque explore des disciplines variées telles que l’agronomie, les sciences sociales et économiques, la géographie humaine et physique, les potentialités de l’environnement et les dialogues Nord-Sud et Sud-Nord, l’usage des technologies numériques et des formations en matière de développement durable.

Violence: An international journal is launching a call for papers on the theme “Violence and environmental crisis”. Can we speak about violence when describing biodiversity loss, the destruction of natural sanctuaries like Amazonia and the Great Barrier Reef, or when observing the spillage of illegally polluting wastes? How long is the chain of violence related to environmental crisis? And who are the perpetrators and the victims of such violence? In which way can we speak about violence, and can this violence be legitimated or condemned? All this raises theoretical, normative, linguistic and empirical questions to be discussed in the articles fostered by this call.

Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge

This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

The impact of terrorism

Violence: An international journal

Terrorism has an impact on the societies that it affects or targets. While this impact can be one-off or limited, nowadays—with the terrorism of radical Islamic groups such as al-Qaeda and, more recently, ISIS—it tends to be heavy and long lasting, even if it does change over time. Its political implications relate first and foremost to democracy and the separation of powers, and can lead to the unraveling and abuse of existing structures, in ways that work to the government’s advantage. If the impact of terrorism is lasting, it becomes cultural: individuals change their habits and behaviors, learning for example not to be passive in the event of a terrorist attack, and going about their daily lives keeping in the back of their minds the possibility that a terrorist attack could take place. Terrorism changes people’s understanding of reality. Terrorism also gives rise to policies that are repressive, but also preventive, or those aimed at exiting violence, using deradicalization programs for example.

The Seamy Side of the New Silk Road: Documenting Repression in the Uyghur Region

This special issue of Monde Chinois Nouvelle Asie is devoted to the crisis the Uyghur region is facing since Chen Quanguo became Communist Party Secretary of Xinjiang in 2016. The objective is to provide the keys to understanding the origins and the acceleration of this crisis on the one hand; and on the other, to look at the processes that affect the fundamental pillars of Uyghurs societies (family nucleus, place of worship and social gathering, language and cultural practices) and their intellectual and economic elites. This special issue will thus gather papers in French or English that offer scientific analyses based on testimonies, Chinese official texts or in-depth examination of the ideologies at work. Scholars from literature, history, economics, anthropology, sociology, political sciences or international relations are welcome to contribute.

Quel rapport une révolution politique, moment tout entier tendu vers le changement, et donc vers l'avenir, entretient-elle avec les modèles du passé ? Est-il possible de « se passer du passé » ? Le changement brutal, la « régénération » et la « table rase », leitmotive du discours de la Révolution française, ne sont-ils que de vains mots ? […] La question du rapport conflictuel et ambigu des révolutions politiques aux modèles du passé nous invite à réfléchir à la fois aux formes discursives, notamment rhétoriques, dont hérite la Révolution française, et à la manière dont cette dernière les récupère, les rejette ou les transforme, et à la fois à l'influence qu'exerce à son tour la Révolution française sur les discours des révolutions suivantes : là encore, s'agit-il d'une imitation (et, le cas échéant, de quel ordre ?), d'un refus, ou d'une métamorphose ?
