The creation of artist fictions - writing with images
L’intérêt croissant des artistes contemporains pour la fiction comme forme discursive se décline selon des registres de plus en plus variés – fictions d’anticipation, autobiographiques, politiques, ethnographiques, documentaires, juridiques, théoriques, pop fictions, etc. – et dans des formats divers, de la nouvelle au roman en passant par le conte ou le scénario. Cette journée d’étude envisage de considérer spécifiquement les fictions, écrites ou oralisées, associées à un dispositif iconique où les images, fixes ou mobiles, projetées ou reproduites, peintes ou dessinées, ont une place de choix dans la construction de l’intrigue, parfois aussi dans sa désintégration. Dans le cadre de cette journée d’étude, il s’agira de centrer les analyses sur la façon dont s’organisent, se configurent les relations entre récits fictionnels et images au cœur même du processus de production de la fiction.

Scientists of many different disciplines are involved in the study of relics and kindred artefacts, but till now there was no real forum for these people to exchange ideas and discuss methods. Therefore the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels) is organizing a two-day workshop on the scientific study of relics. During this meeting we want to give analytical scientists, textile specialists, conservators, anthropologists, historical researchers, people involved in 3D reconstruction as well as radiocarbon dating specialists a forum to exchange ideas about relics.

Francis I and the Artists of the North (1545-1547)
As an extension of the events of 2015 celebrating the 500th anniversary of the accession of Francis I (1 January 1515) and the victory at Marignano (13-14 September 1515), the symposium will focus on the ties between the "grand roy Françoys" and the North. Whereas the exchanges between Francis I and Italy have attracted much attention, the King’s relations with the old Southern Netherlands, as rich and complex, have not been carefully studied. The symposium "Francis I and Artists of the North (1515-1547)" aims to fill this gap by considering the interest of the King of France in artists and musicians from the old Southern Netherlands and their works.

Sustainability of Rural Systems
Balancing Heritage and Innovation
Belgium is a highly populated country with a long history of land exploitation. The landscape is modified through human impact, shaped by diverse agricultural practices, early urbanization and industrialization, the exploitation of quarries and mines and the dense development of canals, railways and motorway networks. Nevertheless, rural areas are important because farming activities, increasingly mechanized and technologically based, contribute to economic activity, especially to Belgian exports. Agriculture plays an important role in maintaining open space and offering many services, which may be called agroservices, to the new residents of the countryside and people seeking recreation. Due to this long history and sophisticated technological responses to different issues, Belgium is a suitable place to reflect on sustainability and how to balance cultural and natural heritage and innovation with special reference to the ecological and social dimensions.

Ethnographic approaches
Taking as a point of departure that since the decline – if not the evaporation – of class analysis in the 1980s, less systematic attention has been paid to the dividing lines of African societies, this workshop wants to take the idea of a social space seriously and to explore, with both theoretical imagination and empirical rigour, the divisions of African social spaces in their historical and multi-layered strata, their production and the way they are practically experienced by social actors.

The production of subjectivity under neo-liberal governance
Neoliberal governance and its structures, and dispositifs, are at the core of contemporary debates in the human sciences. David Harvey (2006) considers neoliberalism a theory that places individual freedom as the final goal of all civilisations. Private property rights, free markets and liberal democracy are the means through which individual freedom is best protected and society flourishes, according to neo-liberal views. The primary role of the state is to enforce property rights, while market forces govern the economy. Neo-liberal ideas have shaped global and national policy for over three decades, introducing the primacy of private property and market rationality in all range of public life from education to healthcare, from land governance to environmental protection. Workers' rights in the global North as well as in the South are devalued in favour of individual responsibility.

International solidarity movements in the Low Countries during the long twentieth century
New perspectives and themes
Making sense of the bewildering variety of foreign causes and countries that inspired social movements in Europe as well as the elective and changing affinities of this activism, has proved to be a challenge for many historians. The history of transnational activism during the twentieth century has for a long time been written with a fragmented focus, with little diachronic and synchronic comparison between different solidarity movements and countries. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers working on the topic of international solidarity movements active in Belgium and the Netherlands in the late 19th and 20th century in order to gain a better understanding of the nature of these movements, their aims and means of action as well as their reaction to the profound changes that occurred during this period in Western European societies.

What does cinema do to literary genres?
Cette journée d'étude entend à la fois analyser les changements que l’influence du cinéma a produits dans le système des genres en littérature (mise en place de genres nouveaux, renforcement ou discrédit de genres existants, mise en valeur des distinctions de genre ou rejet complet des cadres génériques), examiner dans quelle mesure ces changements ont un rapport avec d’autres formes d’interaction entre littérature et cinéma (adaptations littéraires, imitations verbales de techniques cinématographiques, recours à un imaginaire ou des thèmes typiques du monde du cinéma), tout en s’interrogeant sur l’importance du contexte historique (avant/après la révolution numérique par exemple).

The horizon of creation - gloablity and globalisation between utopia and dystopia
Le colloque se propose d’interroger les liens de plus en plus étroits entre l’économique, le politique et le culturel, à l’échelle du monde. Plus précisément, il entend se demander comment l’articulation problématique entre la globalisation et la globalité se traduit dans la création artistique. L’œuvre se fait-elle le reflet d’une dystopie, d’une standardisation réductrice ou d’une utopie, d’une hybridation produisant un enrichissement potentiellement infini ? Comment parvient-elle à rendre compte d’une ambivalence, d’un jeu de tension entre des forces centripètes (que l’on pourrait associer au concept de « globalité ») et des forces centrifuges (que l’on pourrait associer au concept de « globalisation ») ?

French deputies - chosen mobilities and constrained mobilities
The deportation and exile of elected revolutionary representatives of the Assembly (1789-1830)
Le 12 janvier 1816, une loi d’amnistie est accordée par Louis XVIII pour « tous ceux qui, directement ou indirectement, ont pris part à la rébellion et à l’usurpation de Napoléon Bonaparte, sauf les exceptions ci-après ». Parmi ces dernières figurent quelque 170 conventionnels régicides. Pour autant, si importants soient en nombre les effets de la loi de 1816, elle n’écarte pas de Paris des députés ou d’anciens députés pour la toute première fois. Les luttes politiques et la radicalisation progressive de la Révolution ont entraîné bien d’autres mobilités de députés.

Louis D’Hainaut Prize 2016 for the best thesis in educative technology
L’université de Mons (Belgique) et l’Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), à travers son Institut de la francophonie pour l’ingénierie de la connaissance et la formation à distance (IFIC), s’associent pour décerner le Prix Louis d’Hainaut de la meilleure thèse de doctorat en technologie éducative, pour la troisième fois au mois de mai 2016. Il est réservé à un docteur ressortissant d’un pays du Sud dont la thèse a été soutenue il y a moins de trois ans. Le Prix est ouvert à tout chercheur du Sud ayant obtenu une thèse de doctorat au sein d’une institution membre du réseau de l’AUF (du Nord comme du Sud), sur un sujet portant impérativement sur l’usage des technologies en éducation.

Debates, continuities and inflections about identity, ethics and police functions
Le projet « Vision 2025 », exercice de réflexion initié en 2011 quant au futur de la police belge, remet sur l’avant de la scène un ensemble de débats sur la répartition des tâches, l’efficacité, les valeurs et l’organisation policière la plus adéquate pour répondre aux enjeux de la société belge du XXIe siècle. Il interroge le « modèle » de police à promouvoir en démocratie, son adaptation aux multiples enjeux d’une société changeante. Ces questions traversent l’histoire de tout appareil sécuritaire au service d’un État moderne. Indispensables à la définition du « qu’est-ce que une bonne police » et du « que doit faire la police », elles nécessitent une remise en perspective chronologique, pour comprendre la profondeur temporelle des choix aujourd’hui posés et discuter l’ampleur de la rupture, ou le caractère novateur des argumentaires avancés.
