    International Political Sociology (IPS)

    IPS Doctoral Workshops

The Doctoral Workshops initiative is the result of the cooperation in the areas of research and graduate teaching between Sciences Po, PUC-Rio, King's College and Univesity of Victoria during the last three years. It represents an attempt to enhance and structure the ongoing cooperation between these institutions to create the core of a network of institutions promoting a different way to do and to learn International Relations called International Political Sociology. The workshop will investigate the large spectrum of methods going beyond or against the diktat of rational choice theory in IR, ranging from discourse analysis, ethnographic methods, actor-network theory, approaches of limits and boundaries, genetic structuralism, socio-history. The workshop will gather researchers and students who, in the course of their research, are facing the problems posed by the impossibility of shifting from the “national” to the “global” and who consider the international as a central question that determines the conditions of possibility of political practices.

Early Modern European Children and the Non-European World

We invite proposals for chapter-length contributions to an upcoming volume concerning the ways children participated in the expansion of global knowledge and horizons over the course of the early modern period (c. 1500 - 1800) in Europe. We are particularly interested in pursuing this through the study of media created for or presented to children, approached through a variety of disciplinarian perspectives, including history, literary studies, art history, history of science, and philosophy.

Abstracts on any topic in philosophy of the social sciences or in the philosophy of social phenomena are welcome. We especially welcome papers that tackle philosophical issues as they arise in, and are consequential for, practicing social scientists. We will assemble a two-day program of papers to be presented in workshop format so that intensive discussion can be the focus of the meeting. We choose papers with the aim of ensuring a broad mix of topics and of presenters from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, and we particularly welcome contributions from junior colleagues and colleagues new to the area. Send a one-page abstract to any member of the program committee by December 15, 2010.

    Academic Culture of Remembrance

The combination of university history, jubilees and academic heritage

The aim of this two-day conference is to discuss the triangular relationship between scientific research, the opening up of academic heritage and the creation of a culture of remembrance. Two series of questions are at the centre of this symposium. (1) Firstly, we would like to examine, from a historiographical perspective, the relationship between university history, the culture of remembrance in general and university jubilees in particular. (2) Secondly, the place of academic heritage in the creation and communication of (historical) knowledge of universities and scientific practices will be considered. Through a combination of both central themes, the conference aspires to offer some innovative perspectives for writing contemporary university history.

L'événement, organisé par la Chaire Raoul-Dandurand en études stratégiques et diplomatiques en collaboration avec l’Association for Borderlands Studies, aura lieu à l'université du Québec à Montréal, Québec, Canada les 19 et 20 mai 2011.Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the question still remains “Do good fences still make good neighbours”? Since the Great Wall of China, construction of which began under the Qin dynasty, the Antonine Wall, built in Scotland to support Hadrian's Wall, the Roman "Limes" or the Danevirk fence, the "wall" has been a constant in the protection of defined entities claiming sovereignty, East and West. But is the wall more than an historical relict for the management of borders? In recent years the wall has been given renewed vigour in North America, particularly along the U.S.-Mexico border, and in Israel, where the old Green line has been transformed into a wall separating Arab from Israeli. But the success of these new walls in the development of friendly and orderly relations between nations (or indeed, within nations) remains unclear. What role does the wall play in the development of security and insecurity? Do walls contribute to a sense of insecurity as much as they assuage fears and create a sense of security for those ‘behind the line’? Exactly what kind of security is associated with border walls?

This panel would like to question the ways individual life-cycle or collective rituals and calendric festivals contribute to the emotional making of places. Case studies concerning different ritual shapes and places are welcome together with more theoretical or methodological presentations.

Governing Rural–Urban Relationships and Periurban Areas in France and Australia

Different Land Use Cultures, Same Issues?

The governance of rural–urban relationships has become a very challenging issue in many countries around the world over the two last decades. Many competing interests are embedded in it: agriculture, metropolitan development, biodiversity conservation, water resources use, etc. Many conflicts take place in periurban areas, for instance. These conflicts are signs of a more general evolution of rural – urban relationships in a context of global change – eg. global warming, loss of biodiversity, the global food challenge, the petrol crisis. This seminar aims to compare how these challenges are tackled in France and in Australia. Considering the differences between the political and institutional contexts of various countries, it will be a great opportunity to think about the role of land use culture in different governance systems. This seminar is organised in partnership with AgroParisTech Clermont-Ferrand, INRA-SAD and UMR METAFORT.

Social Studies on Biodiversity. Knowing Nature

    Workshop

In 2010, the International Year for Biodiversity, numerous events, meetings and conferences are taking place around biodiversity. This inscription of biodiversity on both political and scientific agendas deserves a new investigation by Social scientists. New institutions of biodiversity are emerging, and new hybrid interfaces between the academic, political and economic worlds are at stake. They question academic practices and our relationships to nature.

Regional Water Management and Adaptive Management

How to deal with multi-scalar issues?

This seminar aims to discuss the interactions between regionalisation of water management and adaptive management. Regionalisation embeds many scales of time and space, which have to be combined to improve and change stakeholder practices. The seminar will bring together international specialists to analyse how adaptive management can deal with institutional, technical and political multi-scalar issues in order to foster change of practises. This seminar is organised in partnership with AgroParisTech Clermont-Ferrand, INRA-SAD and UMR METAFORT.

Bringing Public Organization and Organizing Back In

The Sixth Organization Studies Summer Workshop

As a field of research, organization studies is interdisciplinary, even ecletic, favoring multiple objects, methods, and levels of analysis. Yet, over time, it appears that some of the disciplines involved in this field have grown increasingly unaware of one another. Such is the case for studies and research dealing with public policymaking, public administration, and political regimes. This call for papers and workshop wish to break down these disciplinary silos, by putting the emphasis on the reconfiguration of knowledge frontiers and research agendas between public administration, policy making, and organization studies, as well as between public, non-profit and business organizations and organizing.
