Catholic Intellectuals in France in the mid-20th Century
Following the success of the journée d’étude ‘Engaging with Engagement: French Catholic Thought 1930-50’, held at Magdalen College in May 2010, this conference will continue and extend exploration of different types of French Catholic intellectual engagement during the mid-twentieth century, against the backdrop of the ‘crises’ of civilization of the interwar period through to the war years and beyond. The formation of Catholic identities, in their artistic, philosophical, theological and political manifestations, and the shifting norms and values of political and social commitments in relation to their cultural and theological fault lines, are central to our concerns. -

Conference, symposium - Education
The general thesis of this conference is that the national and international standardizations, the resistances to it, and the development of regional particularities are mutually dependent. During the conference projects, protagonists, and effects of the standardization processes within the education systems throughout the 19th and 20th centuries shall be examined and discussed. International and national processes of standardization and comparisons of them are in the main focus: Not only the success or failure of standardization but also how national standardization processes depend on international standardization processes – and vice versa – are of interest. -

Philosophy of social science. Philosophy of social phenomena
Individual and Collective Rationality

Antifascism as a Practice and as a Discourse
Western Europe / Eastern Europe

Thirteenth annual working conference on topics in philosophy of the social sciences
Paris Philosophy of Social Science Roundtable
We have been organizing the thirteenth annual working conference on topics in philosophy of the social sciences. The 2011 Roundtable will continue a tradition of meetings that brings together philosophers and social scientists to discuss a wide range of philosophical issues raised in and by social research. Abstracts on any topic in philosophy of the social sciences or in the philosophy of social phenomena have been welcomed. We have especially welcomed papers that tackle philosophical issues as they arise in, and are consequential for, practicing social scientists. The result is a three-day program of papers to be presented in workshop format so that intensive discussion can be the focus of the meeting. We have particularly welcomed contributions from junior colleagues and colleagues new to the area. -

Historical Development of National Systems of Elite Formation in Eastern and Central Europe
This workshop is bringing together specialists from mostly Eastern Europe together with some West European partners, capable and liable of sharing their localised research expertise in the study of the birth and initial development of national systems of elite training in a number of (mostly but not exclusively) small East Central European societies. All of them have very concrete empirical research agendas and records in these fields, but separately, applied to their own national societies. The idea of the meeting is born from the need of and the interest in comparing – in many thematic issues term by term – research findings, insights and questions gained from studies of the training, career and activities of various East European elite groups during the decades up to the Soviet take-over. -

Ethnographic Films in Greece: Impressions of Otherness
The majority of anthropologists in Greece, like elsewhere, seems reluctant to use visual means in their fieldwork. Obviously they prefer writing texts in order to communicate their work (even if they have collected certain visual footages in the field) instead of filming and assembling their visual data. At the same time, although ethnographic or fiction films are often used in the teaching of folklore, anthropology and sociology, university teachers get rarely involved themselves in their production. -

Engineer or engineers? Between expansion and fragmentation
New insights and comparative perspectives
