"An Gorta Mór", the Great Irish Famine (1845-1851)

The Great Irish Famine is recognized today as the most significant event inmodern Irish history. From the first appearance of the potato blight in 1845 to its disappearance in 1849 it is estimated that the country lost about a quarter of its population when a million died and a further million emigrated. The Famine, its causes, its demographic and migratory consequences for Ireland and the world and the (in)action of the British government are all topics which have become major political, historiographical and memorial issues. Interpretations have varied and given rise to lengthy debates between those adopting an anti-British nationalist position and others proposing revisionist versions of these events. Since the 1990s, many historians have followed in the footsteps of Cormac O'Grada and Christine Kinealy and have tried, with varying renewed historical approaches, to remove the Great Irish Famine from the grip of this two-sided vision of events.

Annual Conference of the Commission on Urban Anthropology [CUA-IUAES]

    Gender and Health

This symposium will examine various modalities for incorporating sex/gender differences into our comprehension of the normal and the pathological, biology’s effects on gender, and gender’s on biology. The goal will also be to question the systematic nature of the bipartition of the population by sex in order to expose social inequalities in terms of health, at a time when the distinction between sex and gender is something that is becoming analyzed in an ever more complex manner.

    Conference, symposium - Language

    Empirical Approaches to Argumentation

The workshop seeks to initiate a dialogue between scholars from North America and their French speaking colleagues working in the field of argumentation. The invited speakers share an interest in the descriptive and empirical dimension in the study of argumentation. Irrespective of the theoretical framework within which each of the participants studies argumentation and the importance they may ascribe to normative considerations, they all agree that the study of empirical data and the description of real life argumentation are at the heart of argumentation studies. As a result, each of the invited speakers, in their respective work, pays attention to the linguistic mechanisms and to the interactional processes that characterise argumentative activity. The language of the workshop will be English.

    Research archives and data

Annual conference of the university section of the International Council on Archives (ICA/SUV)

Big data, digitized scientific data, researchers’ documents, scientific papers or electronic correspondence represent potential archival materials that archivists must be ready to preserve and make accessible. This is especially true in a world where combined national and international research networks are becoming increasingly complex; where scientists, researchers and therefore archivists are constantly faced with new technologies and perpetual changes in legislation.

New forms of scientific communication and research assessment : perspectives and recognition

The aim of this conference is to think about the frontiers between forms of publication that are said to be legitimate or non legitimate, the new means of researchers’ expression and commitment and the way these publishing venues are taken into account in the research evaluation. In order to achieve this, we will study achievements, experiments or field analyses on overlay journals, open peer commentaries, research blogs in SSH or STM fields, scientific mediation through blogs or social networks, institutional or community evaluations, new metrics, unique researcher IDs, etc.

    Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos

The ‘Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos’ conference explores the culture, economy, and politics of towns and cities based on islands worldwide. It considers common attributes of island cities, the influence of island status on urban development, and how and why different island cities have developed in different ways. Throughout history, islands have been sites of urban development. Physical separation from the mainland, spatial limitations, and maritime tradition facilitate transport of products and ideas, defence infrastructure, construction of social capital, consolidation of power, formation of cultures, and concentration of population.

Speaking to Dominate ? Words, Discourse, and Power Plays

    Revue Autrepart n°76

Analyzing speech practices in context provides valuable insights into social interactions, in particular power or hierarchical relations. The power of words is well known, especially in media and politics. But these words only become meaningful when articulated, and their power is only effective within a specific discourse tied to a particular performance context. While these questions have crossed disciplines such as anthropology, linguistics, and philosophy, they are also pertinent to other areas of the social sciences and humanities. Gender and generational relations, or the assertion of indigenous, political, religious, and linguistic affiliations, are important subjects of study that highlight questions of power, ability to act, and the effectiveness of words.

Présent et futur des publications scientifiques

    2nd Open Access colloquium

    Trade and traders throughout history

Linked to human societies through the ages, trade has taken many forms; it was associated with the appearance of man since barter between tribes and groups of people in the primitive era. This has been one of the pillars of political entities (kingdoms, principalities, Nations and Empires) during all historical periods; it was a factor in their appearance and economic dynamism, a source of political and financial resources due to significant revenue provided to the public treasury power. Trade was behind the emergence of several social phenomena and changes that have affected certain groups of society; it was and is a tool for traffic or movement of social actors, values, and ideas between communities. Currently, trade is of great importance for economic development in all countries ; it is a real challenge that has had an impact on the lives of people, their daily lives, and human and economic development.

The war of the others: The colonies of the First World War

    Footsteps, narratives and memories

This symposium is aimed at taking stock of the different researches carried out on the colonial participation in The First World War, as much from the point of view of history as of representations, in order to understand better the transformations occurring during this conflict.  Indeed, it hopes to consider as large a geographical space as possible: to be not only a reflexion about French colonies, but to be open to the European and international dimension. This symposium will concentrate on understanding what the Great War was to those who were involved in it without necessarily having decided to do so: pain, refusal, but also discoveries...

Knowledge for Open and Inclusive Societies

    Inter-university Programme en Sociology

The vision of the PhD programme is framed in its title: “Sociology: knowledge for open and inclusive societies” (OpenSoc). We depart from a main strategic assumption: the relevance of the knowledge produced by social sciences (particularly sociology) for understanding and intervening in contemporary reflexive societies. Understanding implies the critique of common sense and taken for granted “prenotions”, as well as the construction of adequate theory and concepts that foster a coherent framework to interpret reality, which is then methodologically put to proof and validated in empirical settings. Fundamental knowledge is to be nurtured by itself; but it also enhances the capacity of translating theory into informed and targetted social action and intervention. Societies need sociology. And sociology feeds society.

    Initiations ?

First Moments in the First World War
