    Conférence Cinéma International V

Submissions are invited for the fifth Foreign Language Film Conference, on the theme of Rights and Representations. In this historic setting of the American South, and in conjunction with Birmingham's 50th anniversary remembrance of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing, FLFC celebrates civil and human rights. Scholars will consider the question of civil rights in international cinematic traditions. How does film as an art and a genre represent civil rights, and human rights? What are the places of rebellion, terrorism, or non-violent resistance in forging individual freedoms, and how is this reflected in national cinematic traditions? How do international films address issues of discrimination, violence, repression, the struggle for social equality ? On the pedagogical side of the question, how do films about civil rights teach their viewers about international cultural and political traditions and movements ? How are these films incorporated into classroom discussions of global civil rights ?

    Complaining about Medicine

In recent years, studies into experiences of health care have led historians to engage with the issue of the medical complaint. As expressions of dissatisfaction, disquiet and failings in service provision, the complaint is both a vital antidote to progressive histories of health care and, in generating contemporary investigation and debate, has also left a fertile seam for historical research. Often it is only when things go wrong that we begin to understand thecomplexity at work in past events. This two-day international conference will explore what has happened historically when medicine generated complaints.

History of non-governmental organisations and politics in contemporary Britain

Since 1945, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and new social movements have proliferated in Britain. Historians are only just becoming aware of their key role in redefining notions of political engagement, and their importance for understanding social and political history. NGOs have driven new political agendas, transformed and revived associational life, and re-politicised generations seemingly disillusioned with the politics of the ballot box. mitted by 23 December 2006.
