Looted Art and the Art Market: Nazi Art Theft in Belgium, Europe, and its aftermath

Anchored in a dual research approach, the ProvEnhance project simultaneously examines the trajectories of a selection of artworks from the collections of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the roles of participants within the Belgian art market between 1933 and 1960, situating both within the broader dynamics of cultural dispossession and the post-war approach. Integrating provenance research, art market studies, and data science, the project advances an interdisciplinary framework for analysing the movements of cultural objects and their connections to actors and power structures shaped by the Nationalist Socialist era and its aftermath.

    Seeing the Other Empire

British Travel Writing and Imperial Rivalry in Europe and the Near East, 1783–1914

This conference aims to interrogate some of these British visions of rival empires in narrations published between 1783 and 1914. It would be interesting to analyse the practice of imagined colonialism, that is, how the British travellers cast a domineering gaze upon their imperial rivals when travelling in lands that were not colonies of the British crown.

Crossing urban Planning cultures in time of conflict and reconciliation

Views on continental Europe, 1937-1945. Session 69 – EAUH 2026

Violence and Empire. From the Early 1800s to the End of the Great War

From the early 1800s, the formation, consolidation, and maintenance of empires were increasingly bound to new logics of state power, technological advancements, and legal rationalisation and justification. Despite narratives of civilising missions and administrative modernisation, violence remained a central practice of imperial rule, both as an instrument of conquest and a mechanism for governing already established colonial regimes. This conference invites historians and scholars of related disciplines to consider the various ways in which violence operated within imperial systems, how it was implemented, codified and justified legally and culturally, along with its contemporary perception in the imperial metropolis and its remembrance and subsequent legacies that continuously remain influential until the present day.

Guerre, americanismo e antiamericanismo dal XX secolo all’attualità

    Diacronie. Studi di storia contemporanea

Since its entry into World War 1 in 1917, the United States has played a pivotal international role across political, economic, cultural, and military arenas. This trajectory has been characterized by waves of both Americanization and anti-Americanism, with military interventions increasingly assuming a central role—albeit with notable distinctions. The United States has been consistently engaged in overseas operations. This call for papers seeks to explore the complex relationship between wars, Americanism, and anti-Americanism from the 20th century to the present.

Southern Resilience and Emancipation in a Post-Westerndom World: Reflections on Global Governance

This panel would provide an empirical approach on what next of the controverted emergent Western ideocide, as a legitimacy crisis shaped new global governance structures. It also explores the anxieties surrounding the stress of Western dominance, the theoretical implications of the global south as affected by schizophrenic anxiety caused by a lack of ability to maintain Western hegemonic ethno-supremacy, and the recovery implications of Western anxieties. The concept of ‘ideocide’ serves as a focal point to discuss the transformation of global governance in light of these events.

The Culture of Suspicion: Creating Suspects in the Age of Revolutions

The workshop will examine the impact of suspicion in the age of the Atlantic Revolutions (from around 1770 to 1830) in Europe and its colonial territories. We invite contributions that focus on the question of how individuals or groups of people became suspects of hostility towards the existing monarchical or revolutionary order, and thus potentially subversive. Contributions may deal with the narrative construction of suspicion as well as the practical surveillance measures and juridical proceedings that were used against the suspects.

From Revolution to Exile: Arab Diaspora Politics in a Post-2011 Context

The American sociologist, Roger Brubaker critiques the overuse of "diaspora" as a static concept, likening it instead to a fluid "category of practice, project, claim and stance." Furthermore, the literature recognizes diasporas primarily as transnational communities with multiple societal affiliations and identities. However, recent political upheavals, like the 2010-2011 Arab uprisings, have thrust Middle Eastern and North African diasporas into new contentious and repressive dynamics, highlighting their changing roles and challenges, often referred to as the "Diaspora Spring". The proposed one-day international conference aims to delve into these complexities, focusing on empirical case studies from the MENA region post-2011 to explore innovative political roles and strategies developed by diasporas in navigating their multifaceted identities and engagements in a post-uprising world.

Women, Leadership and Armed Groups in Africa and the Middle East

    Journal of Gender Studies

This special issue of Journal of Gender Studies focuses on the role of women in leadership positions in militias and defense groups, paying special attention on Africa and the Middle East to measure the empirical variation between different terrains of inquiry to be analysed through two different theorical frameworks: the Gendered Theory of Rebellion and the Donminant/Power Theory. The rationale for the special issue is the attempt to analyse and evaluate the experience of women in leadership positions, their motivations for violence and the degree to which their decision-making and influence in the perpetration of violence impacts their definition of feminity.
