Anchoring International Organizations in the Study of Organizational Sociology

This paper session aims to bring together scholars who adopt a sociological perspective to the study of international organizations (IOs). IOs have historically been studied by jurists and later by political scientists through the prism of theories in international relations (IR). In the past two decade, growing scholarship in IR has shifted the focus to analyzing IOs as actors in IR in their own right. To this end, scholars have not only developed new methodologies, traditionally used by anthropologists and organizational sociologists, but have also embraced sociology as a discipline and more precisely the field of organizational sociology. In this way, IOs have been studied as bureaucracies, as organizations within which various actors compete, which comply and produce norms and values. Nowadays, organizational sociology provides a fascinating basis to study IOs not only from within, but also with respect to their environment in a dynamic perspective.

Délinquances, crimes et répression dans l'histoire

La question de la délinquance, dans l’acception la plus générale du terme, se révèle particulièrement complexe car les criminologues, sociologues, psychologues, psychanalystes, médecins, juristes, historiens qui ont abondamment étudié ce sujet ont émis des opinions souvent très différentes, voire contradictoires. Les difficultés surgissent dès qu’il s’agit de qualifier le phénomène. En droit français, le mot délinquance désigne tous les types d’infractions. Celles-ci se répartissent en trois catégories : les contraventions qui constituent les infractions les plus légères, les délits qui se situent à un niveau intermédiaire et les crimes parmi lesquels on distingue les meurtres, homicides volontaires non prémédités, et les assassinats, homicides volontaires prémédités.

Italy and Yugoslavia in the Interwar Period

Monographic issue of “Qualestoria. Rivista di storia contemporanea”

The signing of the Treaty of Rapallo in 1920 made it possible to find a solution to the Italian-Yugoslav dispute over the north-eastern Adriatic border, a solution that would last substantially until the Italian invasion of the neighbouring kingdom in World War 2. Relations between Italy and Yugoslavia, particularly since the end of the 1920s, with the beginning of the more decidedly revisionist phase of fascist foreign policy regarding the structures of the Danubian-Balkan area, were never easy. However, the signing of the Treaty of Rapallo represented an undoubtedly important moment, which greatly contributed to restore a climate of collaboration between the two countries, heavily jeopardized by border nationalism and by the D’Annunzio’s “impresa di Fiume”, interrupted precisely by the Treaty of Rapallo.

The editors of the special issue (Yvette Santos and Paulo César Gonçalves) accept proposals focused on the study of the migration industry linked to the maritime transportation of emigrants from Europe to the South Atlantic countries.

Clausewitz as a practical philosopher

Special Issue of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence

Clausewitz, still perhaps the most important and referenced theorist of war, was deeply influenced by the thought and philosophy of his own time. Although Clausewitz rejected an abstract philosophy of war, he highlighted that his approach was a philosophical attempt to understand war. His “wondrous trinity,” as well as his dialectics of defense and offense are essentially hybrid conceptualizations. By elaborating the philosophical foundations of Clausewitz’s theory, this special issue aims to contribute to a better understanding of the ongoing transformation of war and violent action in a globalized world.

L'impact du terrorisme

Violence: An international journal

Le terrorisme exerce un impact sur les sociétés qu’il atteint ou qu’il vise. Cet impact peut être ponctuel, ou limité. Mais aujourd’hui, avec l’islamisme radical et le terrorisme d’Al-Qaïda, puis de Daech, le phénomène pèse lourdement, et durablement, même s’il évolue dans le temps. Ses implications politiques concernent d’abord la vie démocratique, la séparation des pouvoirs, et peuvent déboucher sur des dérives et des excès au profit du pouvoir exécutif. Elles peuvent aussi favoriser des acteurs populistes, ou nationalistes, jouer en faveur de l’autoritarisme. L’impact, s’il se prolonge, devient culturel ; les individus modifient leurs habitudes, leurs comportements, ils apprennent par exemple à ne pas être passifs en situation d’acte terroriste, ils se déplacent en intégrant l’hypothèse du terrorisme, ils consomment autrement, ce qui a notamment des implications économiques considérables. Leur appréhension du réel se transforme. Le terrorisme suscite des politiques répressives, mais aussi préventives, ou de sortie de la violence, par exemple sous la forme d’actions de dé-radicalisation.

Circulação multilingue do conhecimento e histórias transnacionais da geografia

Nos últimos cinquenta anos, de modo geral o campo da história da geografia têm operado a passagem de uma abordagem centrada nas Escolas Nacionais em prol da circulação do conhecimento em suas múltiplas escalas. Consequentemente, o léxico da história das ciências e da geografia vem sendo progressivamente povoado por conceitos como trânsito, redes, mobilidades, transnacional, circulação, transferência, centrais de cálculo, espaços do conhecimento, geografias da ciência, mobilidade espacial do conhecimento, geografias da leitura e geografias do livro. Mais recentemente, tem surgido um movimento que considera a necessidade de descolonizar a própria história da geografia, tornando este campo um dos mais dinâmicos da disciplina. Entretanto, mesmo no interior desse quadro, temas como línguas, traduções e escrita não têm recebido a mesma atenção em comparação a museus, laboratórios, jardins botânicos e sociedades científicas, por exemplo. Ao recorrermos às recentes perspectivas abertas pelo domínio dos translation studies, constatamos que as Ciências Humanas têm negligenciado o alcance e a relevância do papel das traduções.

Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? In recent years, the expansion of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office network into new countries has generated increasing interest in the role of the places and spaces where diplomacy is made, in the international outreach of the United Kingdom and in the interactions between state and non-state actors and initiatives in delivering foreign policy objectives. What has received perhaps less sustained attention is the impact of diplomatic departures in Britain and in the British diplomatic network on the rethinking of Britain’s influence and power (hard, soft and smart). These departures - from the more dramatic to the more mundane - will be the focus of this conference, which will reflect on the adaptability and resilience of Britain’s international networks, and on what characterises both British diplomacy and Britain as a diplomatic space.
